You could be a white millionaire with media connections, and if you rolled up in a courthouse and murdered three defendants (in a clearly pre-meditated attack) with an illegal firearm, you’d get at least 25 years.
If you’re a poor black guy like Sam Jackson’s character, you have even worse chances.
In fact, regardless of race or status, if you had an assault rifle in a courthouse you’d probably be shot by sheriffs before you could even surrender
Edit: also great catch that this movie was right before the anti-hero boom when heroes had to be very clearly good, villains had to be unrepentantly evil, and any morally ambiguous actions taken by a hero had to be given every justification imaginable to make it easy to understand
Or be written by JK Rowling and have the obviously terrible things the "good guys" do be waved away cause they're the good guys. The hat said so. I always thought it was weird that he just gets away with murdering two unconvicted people.
its essentially a lynching that they defend
The weird thing is that it would probably happen in real life.
But you have to take into account the reason those two men were murdered in the first place was because they admitted to brutally raping, torturing, and attempting to murder a child. That doesn't mean Jackson's character wasn't guilty, or shouldn't have been arrested. It just means that his lawyer was able to convince the jury that his client was temporarily insane. Basically, the point of the story isn't whether Jackson was criminally wrong, but morally.
I would say it’s justified
And a police officer who was escorting them
Grisham has described the book as "very autobiographical" in that the novel's "young attorney is basically me" and the drama is based on a case he witnessed...Unlike Grisham's depiction, however, the Scotts were white and their assailant was black.

You know when McConaughey's character tells the jury to imagine if the races had been reversed? The movie is based on a real life incident where the races were, in fact, reversed. (Willie James Harris vs State of Mississippi.) I usually don't care about movies aimed at middle-class liberals but I find that fact disgusting.
Genuine question: what part of what you stated is disgusting?
@@abrahamdrinkin2534 that the whole premise of the film is an inversion of reality.
@@Dan-xt7sv I’m guess I’m just too gay to understand what’s wrong with that. Like did it devalue what happened in reality?
@@abrahamdrinkin2534 What's wrong is that the film is telling a lie. Its like when Call of Duty took real American war crimes and blamed them on fictional Russians. Even to people who can separate fiction from reality (many can not) the fiction they consume influences their idea of real events. Many zoomers don't know that the US b*mbed a convoy of retreating soldiers and civilians during the Gulf War but in a video game they saw the Russians do it and that influences their picture of reality.
I watched this film as a kid and it influenced my view of race relations for years. I actually thought that White racists going around r*ping Black children was a thing that happened with enough frequency to warrant a fictionalization. You can imagine how deceived I felt once I stumbled upon actual interracial r*pe statistics. But millions of other people also watched this film and I'd bet the majority of them took the premise and message at face value. Their flawed view of reality is only solidified by the consumption of countless other fictional movies, TV shows, books, etc. with the same baked-in premises.
They also become conditioned to identify real-life people/groups/ideas with their fictional counterparts, which ‘poisons the well’ by attaching negative connotations to people/groups/ideas that would otherwise be evaluated in a neutral light. The zealous h*tred of rednecks by coastal libs would not be possible if not for the film trope of rednecks as st*pid and dangerous provincials who mindlessly attack all out-groups. The creators of media intend that their audience will make a connection between real and fictional characters. When people make this connection they often are convinced that they came to an independent conclusion; like the plot of Inception, they are convinced the idea is their own because it was planted in their head via a story they were immersed in rather than a direct monologue.
*I had to re-write all this because RUclips auto-deleted my original reply. To avoid this happening again I'm censoring all words that their algorithm might deem "negative".
