I was listening to Kenyan gospel giant Emmy Kosgei on an interview the other day. She said something I found profound about submission in a marriage. This is what she said and I paraphrase: submission is when it comes freely, willingly and natural. It is not submission when it’s demanded, forced or required.

When a woman gets married, she goes in full motion to practice her trained submission, but when in marriage she feels loved, protected and provided for, submission comes naturally, it is not trained, demanded or required. When a sane mature woman doesn’t feel loved, protected and provided for, her masculinity takes over femininity because of her natural instinct to love, protect and provide for her children. She puts on her guard and full armour and that’s when submission dies, because the trust is lost. She grabs the leadership role, because her helper role has lost meaning. Society has done so well to guide and prepare the girl child for marriage but has done little to nothing for the boy child, so when these two get married, it’s a recipe for disaster. My dad told me something about submission in line with what Rachel said about doing your part. He said I dont guarantee you reciprocity as the Bible states but it is imperative in you that you do your part. When you enter marriage as partners because you are bringing different but complimentary strengths to the team, y'all need to submit to eachother. There are some areas where my leadership as a woman is excellent and my husband submits to me. There are areas where his leadership is excellent and i submit to him. Though he is the head of our house for social and leanage purposes, that doesn't mean whatever he says, even when it doesn't make sense i agree to follow like sheep. Rachel's anology of an organization is different as it emphasizes power dynamics. What about the analogy of two really good business that come together as partners, nobody is anyone's boss but they still get things done? Well me and my husband are partners and we submit to eachother for the purpose of serving our team not our egos.
@Pumla I had a similar perspective of submission (everything being patriarchal) while growing up....but as started interacting with other people I knew it wasn't going to help me in my marriage. I looked out for a book called "Love & Respect, The love she most desires, the respect he desperately needs " It changed my perspective completely and helped me understand how men and women are wired differently. First: Ayeiyeiyeiyeiyeiiiiiiii....... Kaluulu of joy for Pumla. Secondly: Thank you ladies for the show. Third: Submission submission submission. For me, if it's a journey of a thousand steps, I am on my tenth. To reach the tenth step, I also attribute it to God for sure. Please note that even on the tenth step, I think I have gone back to step two many times. Probably because of the words my grandmother told me before marriage and God as the ultimate speaker. This year in October, we shall make three years in marriage. I can't say that I ain't enjoying my marriage coz I think I would have missed lots if I wasn't. The fruits of our marriage, the fun and the love are so overwhelming. Naye the submission part. You guys, it's a sure struggle. Pumla is so realistic and wise. To be honest I have never liked the word submission because of how 'men' and 'clergy' have used it in the past on women. There are some people who use it to undermine women and to show power. Personally I prefer the words love and respect.

When you enter marriage as partners because you are bringing different but complimentary strengths to the team, y'all need to submit to eachother. There are some areas where my leadership as a woman is excellent and my husband submits to me. There are areas where his leadership is excellent and i submit to him. Though he is the head of our house for social and leanage purposes, that doesn't mean whatever he says, even when it doesn't make sense i agree to follow like sheep. Rachel's anology of an organization is different as it emphasizes power dynamics. What about the analogy of two really good business that come together as partners, nobody is anyone's boss but they still get things done? Well me and my husband are partners and we submit to eachother for the purpose of serving our team not our egos.

I looked out for a book called "Love & Respect, The love she most desires, the respect he desperately needs "
It changed my perspective completely and helped me understand how men and women are wired differently.

The times i have argued( sometimes without proof) is because i don't even know or remember what the Bible says about the issue at hand. Yet if i let my partner do as he has forethought,it works out some if not most times.
The massage of a man's ego is a key take home,most times when we let them do as they think and hit rock bottom,the submission that comes after experience is incomparable.

Third: Submission submission submission. For me, if it's a journey of a thousand steps, I am on my tenth. To reach the tenth step, I also attribute it to God for sure. Please note that even on the tenth step, I think I have gone back to step two many times. Probably because of the words my grandmother told me before marriage and God as the ultimate speaker. This year in October, we shall make three years in marriage. I can't say that I ain't enjoying my marriage coz I think I would have missed lots if I wasn't. The fruits of our marriage, the fun and the love are so overwhelming.
Naye the submission part. You guys, it's a sure struggle. Like Rachel, I can go to church, come back all renewed, do all that I am supposed to do as a wife, and then there comes a day when guy is like, "Babe, please get me a glass of water to drink"... Hmmm... In my mind, that's a hustle. I mean, you can't go to the fridge!?? Don't you have hands!?? Okay, please send your son... Etcetera.
Now I've got another remedy, thanks to Pumla and Rachel. In my mind I will keep saying, " Small small water!?? " "Small small tea!?? "
There is something else that I sometimes use. I get it from the scripture that says everyone is created in the image of God. So sometimes, in my mind, I just say, "Let me not quarrel with the image of God"😂 That's what adds on those steps.

For sure sometimes I even cause the trouble and I be like, " Poor man has seen days! "
