what tide boat were you on bob, as i said be for i was on tidespring i was also on the black ranger which was based in portland i was on her for 3 years then i got married & then went to new zealand still there now i dont know how often you look at this page i would love to hear from you
Love it, I sailed on the old Tidesurge in 1968 and then got the newer Tidespring a few years later; after a couple of trips on the ‘chatty but happy’ Resurgent. Good times and good people.
Thank you Toku. Although I only sing the song on the video - I am in awe of the great tales and times I hear from those who sailed on these ships. I appreciate your comment. Bob
Wow, thanks for the memories Bob. I was on Tidespring, Tidepool, Regret and Remource in the early 70s and learned this song and MANY more from Barry Lord. Wonder where he is and trust he is doing well. Lift a pint to you Barry !
You are most welcome and thank you for your visit. I am the singer of the song in the video and unfortunately don't have any involvement with the ships. I'm sure Barry Dixon at RFNNostalgia.org would be able to tell you about Barry Lord's whereabouts. His RUclips channel is really good. I appreciate your comment. Bob
Barry Dixon had seen me on RUclips performing the old Geordie anthem “The Blaydon Races” and emailed me to consider recording a version of the song with different lyrics to accompany some photographs that he wanted to string together as a montage. The lyrics turned out to be: “ The Old Tide Boat Song”. He sent me a copy of the lyrics and said it was a song that used to be sung in “the Ships bar” in the old days. He told me “I look after a group for 'old seadogs' and we used to serve in many ships built on Tyneside and I would like to put together something”. This was a great coincidence to me because as a former engineering lecturer of 33 years, I used to teach many of the apprentices that worked in the Tyneside shipyards. It turned out that Barry was the caretaker of a web site about RFA ships - which at this stage I was unfamiliar. I looked into this and found the subject fascinating. His web site was so alive and informative. So much so that I now had a much better perspective and meaning of the lyrics he had sent me - I just couldn’t not have a go. I’ve got to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this project and thank Barry for asking me in the first place and for all the help he has given me. Best wishes. Bob Tulip
Thank you for this. Last time I heard the song was in the officers bar of either the OLMEDA or TIDESPRING. I always thought it was "fleet replenishment oiler" but now I'm more educated. That and when I last sung it in company we were always so pissed nobody could remember all the words... I raise my glass of Talisker to the O boat, R boat and Tide boat Purple Empire!
Fantastic! Memories of my 12 years in the good old RFA! There was a song about serving on the home coast I would love to hear if anyone out there knows it
Hi, I joined Marconi in 1960 and sailed under the Red Duster for 23 years. One of my mates from the radio college joined the RFA instead. I think he left at the end of the l970's. He told me that one trip he did was the longest 'at sea' that an RFA ship had sailed without entering port. No matter the ensign, red, blue or white this song catches the emotion and leaves a lump in the throat. Kindest regards, Bill.
i was on the tidespring maiden voyage in 62 great times they were
Thank you for that Geoff. I am only the singer on the video. Best wishes. Bob
