    Picard threw that in because he knew Worf would feel more comfortable saying "thank you" to that, than for what came just before that, while at the same time knowing exactly what that "thank you" was for. You could hear it in Worf's voice.

    I like the subtlety of the "Goodbye" from Worf - in the same way Picard (and the crew) show that they genuinely care about and respect Worf, in addition to Picard using Qapla (and all the other ways he's helped Worf and the Empire), Worf reciprocates with a _human_ farewell, acknowledging that he's indebted to them as well and has indeed learned from them.

    Worf's "if you were any other man moment" in First Contact has so much meaning behind it. I've heard people say "what about Sisko?". Worf respected Sisko as his Captain but he had a genuine bond with Picard which I think, Dax aside, he didn't share with any other.

  • @StormsparkPegasus

      Picard isn't in the business of volunteering information unless innocent lives are in imminent peril.
      Worf made his choices consciously, and Picard respected them. If Starfleet came asking, he could simply tell them the truth; Worf resigned, and in the unlikely event he was pressed, he'd say he simply "forgot" to report such a trivial, routine matter.
      Knowing full well that Worf was likely going to learn some valuable lessons, have an epiphany, and return to duty.
      Plus, how could he stand between a warrior and his calling? He's got an artificial heart, for a reason.

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus 2 года назад +13

      @@MichaelTheRead I know, it just seems Worf got back into Starfleet relatively easily after supposedly resigning. Worf saying "Goodbye" - both his decision to use that word (rather than something like "until we meet again" or the like) and his delivery of it - shows that he truly does not expect to be coming back. He's going to war and expects to die with honour.

    Rendering honors by lining the passageway was a proper show of respect; but didn't 'anybody' in the entire cast or crew have any prior service? No dressing of the ranks with a proper height line? Nice thought, but It just looks amateurish. It does make me chuckle though watching this scene; imagining Worf is suppressing his inner R. Lee Ermey as he walks down the line.

    Apparently naval service will be very different in the future. A graduate of Annapolis, Dartmouth, La Baille, Mürwik, Escuela etc etc will be able to decide that he, she, or _it_ can resign their commission, swear allegiance to another country...or planet/empire, and go serve aboard a warship of their new allegiance.... and return at their convenience to the country they swore allegiance to in the first place?
    Edit: But I was happy that Worf stayed on the show... only, they went way too easy letting him just... come back by simply asking and being allowed.

    The one thing that was a little too convenient was that Worf officially resigned, but at the end of next episode he simply asks "permission to return to duty" and Picard says "Permission granted". In a later episode Picard himself said "the enterprise is not something I can leave and then come back to, if I leave, i leave for good"
