    Your natural contempt for totalitarian is so much like mine that i can perfectly imagine the picture ive never seen before: u tore up the paper that twisted by power, threw away all the hypocrisy of censorship.i saw u dancing in the feast of revolution and rapping all night in the parade of demonstrations. u were born free, yet used all ur heart and talent to give voice to us trapped within the gfw, to give voice to those who couldnt.
    Beyond borders, beyond nationalities and race, u fight for the freedom of all humanity, for life, for those brilliant arts and splendid cultures, for all love and beauty.
    This world will never collapse because of the existence of someone like u.thank u for never ceasing to shine.even if its only a faint remnant of light, it will converge into a starry sea of righteousness.
    Thousands of years from now, the dictators currently running the show will be swept completely into the dust of history, and you, the brightest star of all, will shine eternally in the history book,熠熠生辉光芒万丈。

    An inspiring episode. Learning a foreign language is a labour of love at the best of times but being able to mix it with the locals in Mandarin is a great turn on for me... one of my closest colleagues, a German teacher likened learning languages to keys to doors in a house with locks on each room. If you only learn one language ( your mother tongue) , then you stay put in one room! However the more languages you learn, the more rooms you can discover with the keys you acquire.

    Two summers ago I had an experience in a train station in a small city (population less than 2 million) in which I was running late and the line at the ticket window was very long. I had already purchased my ticket online but, as is the norm outside of Tier 1 city train stations, the ticket-printing machines are not set up to read passports - only mainland ID cards - Meaning my simple less-than-one-minute request would require me to stand in line for a long time waiting for a lot of people with very complicated requests.
    I was a bit reluctant to ask to cut in line but my local friend who was accompanying me took the initiative, and all the people in front of me were kind enough to let me do so. The one guy who was already at the window in the middle of his request, who we didn't bother as his transaction was already initiated, decided to interject out of nowhere by saying something about how privileged foreigners are and how his fellow Chinese treat us better than we deserve. My friend and I tried to explain my actual situation and how my "foreigner privilege" doesn't extend to letting me use the convenient ticket-printing machines that Chinese citizens can use without problem. He refused to listen and kept taunting me until I got really pissed and called him an "sb," to which he was shocked and shouted, "look at this foreigner, using *our* Chinese language to curse one of *our* Chinese people!"
    The people behind us all just groaned, rolled their eyes at him, and told him to shut up and finish his own transaction (which was to buy train tickets for a large group of twenty or thirty students, which ended up causing me to be late anyway).
    I will never stop learning Chinese. Language is part of Chinese culture but it is not the exclusive property of anyone. It is a beautiful language and culture which deserves to be shared.

I totally gave up hope on building a life in China and just came hone and went to grad school here. But sometimes I wonder whether I should have held on a little longer and studied a bit more

    I do Japanese at undergrad but i almost took chinese alongside it, with the joke reasoning of "I can always translate when the war starts". I genuinely would do that, but my real reason was it sounds interesting and I would just like to understand more languages far removed from English. Ended up deciding to focus 100% of my attention on Japanese first though and if I ever feel advanced at that, I may swing back for Chinese.

    Hey Lele - your ultimate ambitions are obviously much loftier but I think you've sussed by now that this particular seam - learning Chinese - is still hugely high-yielding on RUclips irrespective of, indeed even perhaps to some extent as a result of, ongoing geopolitical shenanigans. You should make this one of the consistent strands of your output to build the channel. There are some bang average RUclipsrs with millions of subscribers purporting to be authorities on Chinese language and being nowhere near your level. You deserve a bigger audience and running this kind of content may be a means of getting there quicker.
