BERKELEY (AP) -- University of California, Berkeley students who invited Ann Coulter to speak on campus have filed a lawsuit against the university, saying it is discriminating against conservative speakers and violating students' rights to free speech.
Harmeet Dhillon, a San Francisco attorney who represents the Berkeley College Republicans, filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.
Dhillon is also an RNC committeewoman from California.
Campus Republicans invited Coulter to speak at Berkeley this Thursday, but Berkeley officials informed the group last week that the event was being called off for security concerns.
After the university backtracked and offered an alternate date, Coulter has insisted that she plans to still come Thursday.
Coulter tweeted Monday that the lawsuit "demands appropriate & safe venue for my speech THIS THURSDAY."

I don't hold any anticipation that they will win, in today's political climate, I hope they do of course, but will hold there.. But it will help with the change of society that will spark, a better future. I've been so pessimistic of late, with world issues, that I think we can't win. This makes me at least, hopeful. Molon Lobe, I am saying that it is a good thing that the Young Republicans and the other student group have hired an attorney to help them fight against the wrongful verbal U C Berkley policy that is hindering their right to assemble and hear Ann Coulter speak. As the attorney explained the college administration has set up "road blocks" (my words) that are ensuring that Ann Coulter does not receive a prime space or prime time for the speaking event. Yes, I have heard of and have read the Constitution of the United States of America.
This woman is the definition of a true and powerful woman. She is obviously knowledgeable on many topics regarding constitutional rights. Liberal women who are looking in the wrong places for powerful and influential women need to simply look to this strong woman.

I'm no lawyer, but this kind of discussion is why our system is superior to European systems. For as much as they (especially the British) talk about freedom and free speech, they don't actually have it, and they don't have established law that allows them to make these arguments about free speech. This is why you see Germans, Swedes, and others being so careful when they criticize government policies and ideas, because they know they can get a knock on the door from the police, or a fine.

Liberty and Justice for All My uncle was a professor there many, many years ago. nHe would be horrified at what this so-called school is now. He was open-minded man and we had some great discussions then. Looks like those days are gone. This will wind up going to the Supreme Court. Freedom of speech no longer exists, especially in bigger universities.
