What is: Magnum XL-200 - The World's First Hyper-Coaster

- Magnum XL-200 is a steel roller coaster, located at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio USA. The ride opened to guests as the world’s tallest roller coaster and became the world’s first roller coaster to break the 200ft, 61m height barrier. However, Magnum is more than just a record breaking roller coaster. It officially kick started the coaster wars, brought a change in how roller coasters were designed, and put Cedar Point on the theme park map. In this video, we explore the history of Magnum XL-200, the problems it faced upon launch, and the type of ride experience it offers today.

Thanks for watching! :)
@@coasterbot I always love quality content.
Just like this whole channel ;)
One of my favourites this and not just because I was part of it. Thanks to Harry for the opportunity to do this ☺️
I really want to go to Cedar Point one day and ride not just Magnum XL 200, but also Millenium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Steel Vengeance, Maverick, Gatekeeper, Raptor, Valravn, Wicked Twister, Iron Dragon, Blue Streak, Gemini, Rougarou and Corkscrew.
@@connorpendlebury3931 Hope you go someday, but skip Corkscrew and 'Black and Blue' Streak. It is THE Amazement Park!! Have fun!!
Great video about my dumb little hyper, just a few small things that I noticed:
-1.87 million was magnums ridership in its first season, this however was not a record for cedar point at the time as most of their other roller coasters such as corkscrew, gemini, and Mine Ride were able to hit upwards of 2m million riders as they were (in their original configurations) higher capacity rides than Magnum.
-Not sure where you got the capacity of 2k riders per hour, to achieve this Magnum would have to cycle 56 times an hour, the first block (A block) takes about 70 seconds to clear, this means that the ride can cycle a maximum of about 42 times per hour. This makes for a maximum capacity of about 1400 - 1500rph. This was true for both the original arrow and modern consign system.
-The 3rd tunnel was recently given some special affects along with the addition of the station music in 2019
-64 seconds from the drop to safety brakes (ones at the end of the 3rd tunnel) is a little slow. The average time is between 58 and 62 seconds. This ride time actually works perfectly with the block system so that a train can always be sent as soon as the lift is clear without worrying about setting up the next block coming off the lift.
Overall nice video, for sure one of the more accurate ones covering the ride!
Thanks for the info! Throughout is a really interesting one. I don't know who comes up with the numbers (the manufacturers surely) but when you actually figure out how those numbers were produced a lot of times they don't line up - as you said.
I bet it's an awesome ride to work on! :)
I got on Magnum the year it opened. It was unlike anything in the world!! The wait to get on was up to 3 hours long. Those waiting in line played with blow up beach balls. I attended an ACE event and I rode it after midnight!!
That's awesome man! I remember this coaster's debut back in 1989...I was all of 12 that year, and just the year prior had cut my teeth on the now long gone Crystal Beach Comet. I didn't get to ride Magnum until 1990 - but I WAS there at Kennywood 1991 for the debut of Steel Phantom....God, those were good times!
@@Manic_Drone_Idiom wow, Crystal Beach Comet looked awesome! Yes, I also rode Phantom opening year. That second drop was insane!!
That's awesome!
seeing Magnum XL-200 yesterday in the snow during Cedar Points Winter Chill Out was amazing. With the snow, crisp blue sky, with little clouds. The orange was really popping
Looked like an excellent event Darren
That's awesome!
What is: the objective best roller coaster ever
Not this ride, that's for sure ;)

I love Magnum XL 200. I was her ride crew and manger for 8 years. This is my baby girl. I love her still.
I wish they made more Arrow hypers if they weren’t bankrupt
Thank you for subtitling your videos. Deaf theme park enthusiasts like me can actually learn about wonderful rides such as these and enjoy videos like this. Keep it up. 💙
No problem. We'll continue to subtitle every video that is scripted. Thanks for watching :)
Great job and collaboration!
Thanks Sean! :)
I am longing to ride Magnum XL200. We should have been at Cedar Point last summer, absolutely gutted we couldn’t go. We’ve postponed for now, but I’m determined to ride that coaster one day.
I always enjoy the What Is...series. Thank you Harry and Scott.
It’ll definitely be worth the wait ☺️
Thanks for watching! Hopefully you can visit Cedar Point in the near future :)
14:38 this angle of magnum always makes it look like the second hill is a weird dive loop for some reason. Great video btw I really liked it.
You're right, it does! Thank you :)
Man it's crazy to think of how most of these airtime filled hypers we have now might never have happened without Bandit
BAND-it
Been riding this one since it opened. I'm still freaked out by just the bar over your lap! Great video!! I learned a lot!!
That's awesome! Thanks for watching and for the kind words :)
I remember riding this as a child in 1990.!! I learned so much in this video. Thank you for sharing all of this great content. HUGE THUMBS UP.!!
That's really awesome, thanks for watching and for the kind words :)
@@coasterbot 🚀👍😃
I first rode it in ‘99 when a group of us who were in college at the time took a summer road trip from Boston. It was at that time the crowing jewel of coaster achievement and I remember riding it over and over again thinking there was no way they could top it. While I’ve certainly ridden longer, taller, and faster rides since, Magnum holds a very special place in my heart at being the coaster that cemented me as an enthusiast. Great video and keep up the good work!
That's a really awesome story. I bet it was a truly incredible ride at the time. Thanks for the kind words :)
I'm very happy that my footage is in this great, informative video. great work.
Thank you very much :)
4:30 - I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this shot!!!!!
I loved it! The last few airtime hills were very strong, definitely one of the best rides at CP!
Sadly there's no Arrow Hyper Mine Train exist ever despite share similiarty
I guess after this it has to be millennium as the first Giga?
Yeah cedar point broke the first 200, 300, and 400 foot barriers with magnum, millie, and dragster!
@@bee_evoker was leviathan at Canada’s wonderland not the first giga or is it only the first b&m giga?
@@calebverdone105 I think it was the first b&m giga. I know millennium opened in 2000 and I think leviathan opened in 2012 or something
Even though this is debatable, Moonsault scramble is technically first. However moonsault scramble isn’t full circuit like magnum so moonsault scramble was the first ever shuttle coaster to hit 200 feet and magnum was the first full circuit coaster to ever be 200 feet
Well, yes but also no. The word hyper-coaster didn't exist until Magnum, so how could Moonsault Scramble be the first? ;)
Amazing video, great collab!
Today Rollercoasters have Airgates
Crazy Bats at Phantasialand: Am i a Joke to you?
It is a joke to me, what a terrible roller coaster.
XDDDD
crazy bruhs moment
do more hyper coasters
What rides would you like to see covered specifically? :)
Magnum has a drop of 194' and with a track length of 5,106' is the 40th longest roller coaster in the world. It comes in 7th place for me at Cedar Point; I thought I'd love those more vertical parabolic hill crests on the return run that most people who love this coaster love about it the best but I found it painful. My favourites at Cedar Point are 1: SV; 2: MF; 3: Gatekeeper; 4: TTD; 5: Raptor; 6: Maverick and 7: Magnum. It's still a good ride and any park would have to have an incredible coaster lineup to have Magnum as its 7th best. I tried finding out what the tallest and fastest coaster Magnum was and it took me until about two years ago to discover it was Bandit (which BTW is actually a standup coaster). Thanks for posting this video!
Thanks for watching! Interesting list of your favourites rides at Cedar Point :)
Wow! Looks like you and Scott did an absolute good job with the voice acting! Congrats! It's just like Scott's video on Arrow Dyramics!
We planned out both videos together and worked together through the whole process, it was very enjoyable ☺️
Thanks that means a lot :)
11:03 eyy there's my picture
Thanks for sending it over :)
6:50 Magnum XL-200 and Millennium Force crossed together
I remember going on this coaster as a young teenager the year it opened. My friends knew I was scared of coasters yet I somehow ended up in the first car, second row. lol You wouldn’t catch me on it now. With age came a lot of anxiety and fear of heights! Lol Enjoy!! 🎢
Great video! 👌🏼 Does Magnum often have long wait times?
Very informative!
Thanks :)
And it still so dang good
Worlds first FULL CIRCUIT hyper coaster
Well, Cedar Point coined the term 'hyper-coaster', so it was in fact the first hyper-coaster regardless! ;)
@@coasterbot Isn't it the same with stratas and gigas? XD
Moonsault Scramble wasn’t a hyper.
@@triple7marc it was
@@albeniso Kind of. Technically the only company who builds stratas and gigas is Intamin, so Kingda Ka and Intimidator 305, while not at Cedar Point, are also a strata and giga, respectively, because they were built by Intamin. For this reason Fury 325 and Leviathan technically are hypers due to B&M not having a specific giga model, but for simplicity sake we still call those gigas.
That’s what bothers me now, favourite rides gone...
Enjoyable video, thanks. 👍
Thanks for watching :)
If you want the full story about Arrow, check out the documentary that ACE did several years ago. It's available for free here on RUclips.
It’s an awesome documentary, watched many a time ☺️
During the filming of the Nerve Centre episode about Cedar Point, Magnum XL-200 broke down, forcing riders to evacuate the ride while on the lift hill. What’s even more bizarre about this is that during testing with empty trains, the lift chain motor worked just fine and the staff couldn’t find anything wrong with it. So they reopened the ride and even with a loaded train, the lift worked perfectly. It’s one of the strangest things to have happened to a roller coaster
This is one of my all time favorite rides. People always complain that’s it’s rough and in my opinion I do not find it all that bad. Some of the transitions may be a bit janky but I think it’s the restraints and how violent the airtime actually is. It’s some of the most intense airtime I have ever experience. And since the ride almost never has a line it’s so easy to just walk up to it and get on.
Totally agree with this
I can see both camps, it looks great but also not so great in other areas. :)
One of the greatest roller coasters ever built!
It certainly looks fantastic
This ride has some of the best ejecter in the world
Cool video
Thanks :)
Magnum is my favourite chocolate coated ice cream.
It's a very nice ice cream too
Please, make a vídeo explaining why Hyper Coasters and Giga Coaster usually doesn't have loops and invertions?? I never ride in a hyper or giga coaster and for me it doesn't make many sense...
I rode this in 1989 and it scared the shit out of me. Now I love it, but 8 year old me didn’t so much.
2:58 i can smell that
13:06 bank right?
That shot at 5:12, is that all just wind moving TTD like that? Cause that seems hella shakey.
Rides flex all the time. If they didn't they could effectively shatter. It's a safe movement :)
@@coasterbot I know they do move, but this looks so intense.. :O
Here before all the comments saying Moonsault Scramble was aCtUaLLy the world’s first hyper coaster even though it literally was not
It wasn't, because Moonsault Scramble was a shuttle coaster. The characteristics for a hyper coaster is 200ft high, and a full circuit coaster.
@@ayrtonsananda The characteristics for a hyper coaster are if its manufacturer classifies it as such. Therefore Magnum is a hyper and Moonsault Scramble isn’t.
I want someone to do a video on the original Coney Island (Ohio) and how big of a park it once was to the Coney Island we have now! Would make for a interesting and amazing video. But may be hard to find videos/photos but would be well worth the research!
Great suggestion :)
@@coasterbot Thanks! We know the part it played in giving us Kings Island, but before that it was a major amusement park that Walt actually visited at one point in time to get ideas/inspiration for Disney Land. But we don’t know much about the park during it’s hay day, how the park managed to survive after Kings Island and what the park is today! Would make for a good video or even a mini series 🤷♂️
my favorite ride at CP
Are you sure that Bandit opened with lap-bars? I rode it in 1992 and it had thos stupid OTSR. If it opened with lapbars there must have been a change after a few years.
Phantom's Revenge still doesn't have air gates and it's wonderful.
Oh wow that's crazy!
Magnum XL-200 love the trains that look like the Japanese Bullet Train, it's rival is the Big One

Can you do a video on Thomas Land at Alton Towers
Hell yeah

One of the best coasters of all time hands down
It's Probably Know As "Magnum Extra Large 200" because XL is a Symbol or an Abbreviation for Extra Large, As in the size of your clothes. But as a name of a roller coaster, it can fit in
the name because it's a Large Coaster
Desperado. Somebody with money please save desperado
Sadly I will probably never be able to ride magnum xl or any other ride in the United States
Fun video!!!❤😍💏💪💋💋💋💋
Thanks! :)
Magnum XL-200 is a roller coaster of pain.
It's the best non hybrid hyper in the world is what it is
If only they made it 100 ft longer it would be a mile
Actually a hypercoaster is a rollercoaster with a height between 200-299 feet tall. If it were 300 feet it would be a giga.
What about a ride measuring 299.99ft tall? It's easier to say between 200 and 300ft tall. :)
Greater than or equal to 200 ft and less than 300 ft
Oh come on, stop being so pedantic. These are all made-up rules anyway.
Too true Marc, too true
This coaster beat me up too badly to enjoy it. Those final bunny hills were like riding a raging bull.
Yeah, it's too uncomfortable to be enjoyable if you ask me. I'd love it if the restraints weren't so damn AWFUL. I could barely walk after getting off from the pain lol
I never understood the popularity of Magnum. It's a great layout, but no matter where on the train you sit, it is so painful. People always complained about Mean Streak, but at least there if you were willing to wait for the front car you had a comfortable ride. There's no escaping the pain on Magnum
I’ve never understood the hate it gets, best airtime moments in the park and without the 3 hour queue to experience those 😉
Maybe I'm a bit fragile, but I've ridden well over one hundred different coasters on the eastern side of the US and I can't remember a more painful ride. Maybe it depends on maintenance or weather and I just never rode at the right time. But it always hurt so much I couldn't possibly enjoy it
@@icopaseticMHF I’m from the UK and it’s the main reason I go to Cedar Point, I’d probably not bother as much or at all if it wasn’t there. Steel Vengeance is a lot less enjoyable.
This ride is not that rough at all. It's the stapling during the last stretch of airtime hills that hurts so much.
Not a condom, got it
Guests navigate no guests sit down and go for a ride
Ha ha yeah, but you can only use 'ride' so many times before it starts to get repetitive!
Yea your right good video though
Obviously Magnum is great but I don’t get how it is people’s favourite ride ever haha
