Cabin on cliff (Chapter 5). Joists. Hauling. Decking. Sweating. Swimming.

  • Alas, chapter 5 is here. My life is kinda crazy busy these days, so thanks for waiting patiently for this one. Working through this heat wave is definitely more challenging! I wasn't able to get as much done as I had planned, but it still feels like I'm making progress.
I realize I might not explain some things very well, or why I'm doing things in one way over another way. Depending on what the stream of comments look like, I may do a quick video doing just that - explaining some things :)
This video is about joists. And hauling the joists. Installing some of the joists. Some play time too. And there was lots of sweating.

This might be overkill but, I coat the top edge of each deck joist with roofing tar and cover it with ~2+ inch wide strip of tar paper and hold the tar paper down with a few staples to keep things intact as I screw down the deck boards. This tends to 'seal' the deck screws (or nails) that penetrate into the joists. 20+ years later after the deck boards have rotted away, the joists were almost new looking even though the joists were untreated lumber. Build on!

He is 84 and uses a walker, but he prepped the area with a hoe under protest from me. He never quit and never said a word as I argued that he would fall or get hurt he just kept working. I shut my mouth and let him go. He has never been an idle man, ever. While watching your video I realized work is still important to quality of life no matter how old you get. I almost stole his blessing.

Even though the company I worked for years ago was referred to as The Flintstones because we used short pipes/logs to move items.
If you had a clear runway you could bundle your load, place short round logs on the way every so many feet, less than the board length
(keep the load on a rope so yo do not loose it) you need an assistant along the way to keep moving the short logs as the load moves.
    Yes it works!

Small tip for the next time you have to do this by yourself- get a 6 or 12" squeeze type wood clamp to hold one side ( far side ) of joist hanger in place at the bottom of the rim joist where you want it, then screw in the near side . Take off the clamp and screw your hanger to your rim joist. Gives you a third hand, kinda. Really enjoying your adventures; hope the heat wave isn't too intolerable.

Michy, who built that Big stone wall behind you? Did you say you had 9 boards? Why not wait and do them on 16" centers. Do all 8 them get your last one. Do you know what those little tabs on the hangers are for. Pound them in to hold the hanger up, then nail then, put a nail in every hole. Watch and make sure how the crown of those deck board are, get them all the same way. I wish you would post more video's, Love watching you work. Beautiful !

It is too easy to get caught up in the tasks at hand and cause us to forget to notice the beauty that surrounds us. Attach a harness to the rollers (your ratchet straps could be used for harness) to send material down. And use a long rope to slow the material when they approach the end of the cable. Well done and thank you for sharing. It is so neat how a found item (the bottle) coupled with a bit of nature can deliver such a calming and rewarding feeling at the end of a long work day. I noticed the method you used for the screws and recognize it from some of my early projects, I have since been using a bit holder with a telescoping collar, this allows me to extend the collar and place the screw on the bit and it stays in place while directing the screw to the desired location, also I use a small nail/screw apron instead of a large tool belt to hold all my hardware (screws). Maybe these will help a bit, all the best.

Wow! $740 for 13 pressure treated deck boards, there must be a couple of western red ceda trees around there to make your own, I did a ceda deck back in 1990, and it still looks great today, trick is to make sure you lay the cup side up and with 3/16” gap for the rain to run off and keep the leaves off. The build is looking good.

I didn't see if you hammered in the flang spikes in the joist hangers. I'm sure you did. Cheers 😀 great content 👌 🤜🤛💥🌹

A way to get the materials down to the build site - lay round log cuts to serve a rollers, all the way down the hill in a cleared path. Greased, or smeared banana peels will help reduce friction. At the end place bales of straw to slow the materials. Or maybe a strong rope net? Just an idea, because it looks pretty treacherous on those steel winding paths.

Not sure of Steve's specific issue, but from a man with multiple fractures in his thoracic region FLOOR SLEEPING changed my Life Forever ! NOTHING has helped more to realign my posture and keep me in the gym lifting heavy. Ten years later i have two small homes nearly built and a massive garden 😁
Curious , why burn treat the floor joists ?

I didn’t end up including that in the video (it didn’t make the cut! Haha). I’ll likely have to talk about it next time cuz people will wonder, but we have pack rats out there, and they chew on wood!!! Charring the wood is to deter them from tearing the place apart. As for the deck joists, basically for the weatherproofing.

You should always use joist hanger nails screws have no shear strength.

I just found out recently that Simpson makes rafter and joist hanger screws these days that are rated for shear. Pretty cool to see advancements in building technology like this.

Tip, hang your joist hangers (screw in one side of the metal only) on each end first. Then set your joist in the hangers. Let the hangers do the work.

The only reason I didn’t do it that way was because I’m using my own milled lumber, and it’s not all exact. I wanted to make sure everything was flush at the top.
Someone did tell me that the tabs on the hangers are there so you can hammer them into place first. I’ve never really used them before, so winging it all!

Don't worry about the 20" on center goof. The standard building codes are engineered to be way stronger than necessary and to sell more wood.
