Being a volunteer in architecture is definitely nothing to be proud of, there is absolutely no reason for you volunteering, its a business not a charity. And people are definitely destroying the profession by doing that, and not only that, with volunteering for something you should be paid for is also showing that you are this step on person, they can roll all over you. "Look at me im so nice that i hate myself and all the rest too, please use me i dont have a rent to pay i live in a barbiehouse." It all starts with selfrespect.
But for the rest this video was extremely helpful and it has absolutely things that i wanted to know, its just that i wanted this one thing out there: don't volunteer, if they cant do the bare minimum and pay you, thats not the job for you, period.

It should be noted that this is their preference. The reason this process is so difficult is every firm has their preference and every interviewer has one as well. You need to research the firm for sure and see what they want and tailor what you give them. If they are looking for something you do not so then they are not the right fit. Some firms want a website, not a 15m pdf, some want a 5m pdf, some want a sample and then a larger hard copy later, some bound, and some a folder. if you can do all then great you can get in front of more firms. It also depends on how you make contact. I have contacted them and also been contacted so the type of info and format I used was different. Most helpful tip is Architecture firms create a value package to clients so you should tailor what you do in a similar fashion. then sell that package to them.

At 3:57 - notice how a professional architect in the hiring position first finds their candidates. It is NOT through the AIA, the common job listing agencies, or on-line resume sources... it is through their own personal network of contacts. Think about what this means to a prospective hire. Their first action is to try and take people from other firms. I find this is the common first step and yet find it very odd that it IS the first step.
Also - watch the micro-expressions of the two men at 15:17 where the situation of the interviewed is not critical but rather an option for that possible hire. See how uncomfortable they become. This is because they actually do not like the prospect that a person they are considering could actually TURN THEM DOWN. They do not like being evaluated and yet it is a valid point and very appropriate. This is a great video to watch just for the reactions and subtle gestures.

I have been trying to set up interviews here in my area of NC, I have received calls but never have I gotten an opportunity to get back into Design Architecture, I wanna be able to convince my employers that I am ready to began a new career with them but its hard to set up a personal interview with a firm or a developer or an architectural office for this matter. I wish people who went through design school had the upper hand in getting hired faster than those who have not or only have recently graduated from universities. We still have debts to pay and we certainly look to work doing something we love doing.
Its hard to believe all the hiring tips you are mentioning because it never really works out that way, there is a lot of exclusivety in favor of younger grads towards older mature designers.
I wish something could be done about it and try to give people equal attention and job opportunities even if its at a beginner level or an aprentice position or an internship,....in my case most of my professors have passed and I struggle getting references to speak on behalf of my work.
I want to design and solve problems in construction and I wish people in charge could over;look the fact that some of jus are just getting older and in so many ways wiser and like they said try to focus on a positive attitude and willingness to learn and work with the team of designers to shapen our building reality for the better.
I know that the world needs to think about solutions to design problems wether these are written or drawn on paper, whether they are to scale using the latest software or just hand drawings or sketches but to me this is what globalization of the masses should be and should mean to newer generations, who might learn something from old generations specially in the field of design.
