  • Hands-on with Apple WatchOS 10 and the new topographic map feature to see how it actually works, both the good and the bad.
    In this video I dive into how to access the maps, where the maps are available, and where they aren't. Plus the trailhead feature, how to route and to do navigation within the maps, and everything else you might want to know about the Apple WatchOS 10 topo maps on the Apple Watch (Apple Watch Ultra in this case).

    Well, that is way more limited than I expected, even for a beta version. This is just a phone navigation that pushes directions to your watch.

      Welcome to Apple 😂

    • @AHungryHunky
      @AHungryHunky Год назад +3

      Apple engineers thought process on this is probably that you will have your Iphone with you in your pack since it does have some rudimentary satellite and SOS features, therefore your phone can run the maps for your watch. They don't quite understand the thought process behind why you might want your watch and phone to be functionally separate during off-grid activities, similarly to how they don't understand why if you are planning a 2-3 day hike you might want a navigation capable watch that lasts for a week or more.
      One of the things that tanks my Fenix's battery fast is frequently using the maps on it so I'm also wondering if the workload wasn't put off on to the more powerful phone to preserve the AWU's already short battery.
      The AWU is definitely a weekend warrior watch, and that's okay because I'm betting most Fenix/Epix watches do far less exciting things than marketing would make you believe. Mine certainly has never been to the top of everest and hasn't done more than a weeklong camping trip in known parks, though I love the built in nav on it, better than Google Maps once cell drops lol.

      @savagedriver1967 Год назад +1

      But I thought the main strength of the AWU being a true smartwatch was not having to have your iPhone with you... but I do if I want to use maps. Mixed messages or what 😮

    So I’m happy about the offline maps and can live with having my phone with. I just hope we get route planning and navigation. I can even deal with switching between apps, it’s just a double tap on the crown. But no Route upload is a deal breaker.

    It seems that Apple may get it right in next 12 to 15 months.

    • @kistovisback
      @kistovisback Год назад +10

      They are and have been killing it by not overfocusing on the comparatively small market of hardcore sports watches users. Listening too hard to this niche crowd would be a mistake for them as this crowd does not speak for their main market. That's why they're only starting to get to it now, at the 8th generation of the watch, and even now slowly. Speaking as a forerunner 955 owner but from a product & market point of view it's silly to cater to the 1% and their demanding needs. The 1% pays 1% of the money but asks for 50% of the functionality.

    I wonder if this is design limitation or designer limitation, but either way it kind of seems like Apple is struggling to figure out who is AUW actually for. If they want to appeal to outdoor crowd, the hikers, the trail runners, etc... the obvious quick win is the ability to read GPX files. You don't even need anything fancy, basic offline topo + GPX track would satisfy large majority of outdoor crowd imho.
    What they're doing seems like kind of pointless. Who goes on a trail and at the last minute uses the watch to find a route for them???? You sit at home, map the route you want to take, then want the watch to follow that path.

Cheaper and I don't have to deal with Verizon or AT+Ts BS while getting basically the same service quality. Actually I think I'd rather they take it a step further, instead of LTE I'd rather they build in satellite communication. Imagine not necessarily being able to take calls, but be guaranteed you'll see texts anywhere, any time and have constant weather updates even outside of service. Much more valuable than calls to me, enough so that on the next sale, hopefully before my October trip, I'll be buying an inreach messenger.
