  • How to Choose the Right Solicitor for Your Case
Presented by Marcus Johnstone, Senior Solicitor at MAJ Law Solicitors in Widnes, Cheshire, UK
Choosing the right solicitor is extremely important and can affect the outcome of your case. In this video we look at the most important points to consider.
Choose a solicitor you feel comfortable with.
Speak to the solicitor direct, not a secretary, clerk or case worker.
Check whether your solicitor will be involved from day one, and throughout your case.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions: How long have you been qualified? Do you deal exclusively with this area of law? How many cases have you won?
Make sure your solicitor explains all your options and what will happen if you plead guilty or not guilty.
Be wary if any solicitor advises you to plead guilty before completing a thorough examination of the evidence.
Make sure your solicitor can explain how your case can be defended based on the information you provide. Consider your chance of success.
Cases can be won by finding technical mistakes made by the police and prosecution service. Simply because the police say you were speeding / drink driving / drug driving / careless driving etc, does not make you guilty.
Check whether your solicitor deals exclusively with your area of concern. Is your solicitor a specialist?
Does your solicitor have a good working relationship with the prosecution office in your area?
Can you contact your solicitor outside normal office hours?
If shopping around, make sure you compare like for like. Check exactly what your solicitor plans to do. Is the price quoted simply for a guilty plea or for a full defence?
Check if your solicitor can offer a fixed fee. If so, check what is included.
