  • Join me on my journey to do what the professional plumber said couldn't be done! My shower drain began leaking into the floor and I called the plumber who told me I cannot replace this drain without removing the entire shower stall. I live on the first floor of a house on a concrete slab foundation with no crawl space. To accomplish the goal I had to get creative with harbor freight rotary tool and my drill and cut the drain out carefully. My video shows you what I did and the end result. I replaced my drain with a "Wingtite" top install drain which I am happy to report is working great 3 months later, no problems! :D

    I’m a plumber just did this for a customer instead of tunneling under the home to repair. Thanks for the video!

      @sierragreen so true, didn't know I was posting this or if it would work. If you listen to what I said I did that tells you how I did it. If you have questions I'm happy to answer them. Luckily I've never had to do this again to make a better video.

      @@lisaac90 Thanks for responding. I have a similar situation, evaluating whether I, as a DIYer, can replace a drain embedded in slab. I was hoping to see the steps you actually took in pulling the old one out and putting the new one in. The steps in narration form are not an adequate substitute. Seeing the actual work would also have clarified whether my drain is the same as yours (which would tell me whether I should follow your steps). Anyway, the video was still helpful. There are almost no other RUclips videos addressing this specific issue.

      @sierragreen yes that's why I posted the video even though it wasn't great because I couldn't find any videos for this. My pipe stuck out of the ground 4 or 6 inches. The old drain was plastic allowing me to drill through and break it in half. If it's metal it will be harder but possible. One thought I had was if I try and fail then the plan b was ripping out the whole shower stall which is what the professional plumber said they would have to do. So i didn't have much to lose by trying my way which luckily worked. What couldn't you see that you needed to see? I can tell you what I did. Or what it looked like.

      @@lisaac90 Okay, thanks for asking: What do the top four screws for the Wingtite drain screw in to? It looks like they would had to have screwed into the ring that remained when you pulled the old drain out, but I would think that ring was part of the old drain and would have to be removed before you could properly install the Wingtite drain.

      @lisaac90  Месяц назад +1

      @sierragreen aw I see why you would think that. I know I removed the old drain completely. Just had the pipe left. If you look up the wingtite product and watch the install video it'll show you what those screws do. Link below is the install instructions and video. It's super easy install. The one thing I did different was caulked the top of the pipe inside the drain so I didn't have to trust the o ring alone. www.wingtite.com/pages/installation-how-to-install-wingtite

    You might have just saved me a headache and thousands. I have a leak but can't even remove the drain cover, it's one piece of plastic, was hoping I don’t have to cut it, but it looks like it's the only way so I can figure if it's a drain leak or the pipe is broken

    • @lisaac90
      @lisaac90  Год назад

      I wish you luck! I hope it's just the drain leaking, much easier fix I imagine than the pipe but I don't know your situation. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • @dantee323

    Why not just put water proofing foam in there around the pipe? Wouldn’t that be cheaper and easier?

    • @lisaac90
      @lisaac90  Год назад

      I'm confused by your solution, where would you put the foam? Would you be able to do that without removing the old leaking drain? You could also reseal the old drain from the top but I didn't know where the leak was. The plumber said that wouldn't last long. That a new drain was needed as mine was probably 20 years old.

    Good info....being on a slab ..how did you know you had a leak?

    • @lisaac90
      @lisaac90  Месяц назад

      @TC-tw5zk the shared wall and room is carpeted and it was soaking wet at the base of the shower wall. I stopped using the shower and used my dehumidifier to dry out the carpet and it stopped getting wet when I turned the dehumidifier off. Allowing me to determine it was the drain not the pipes.

      It was leaking so long that it made its way into the shared wall rooms carpet.

      @@lisaac90 Appreciate that! Curious, what let you know there was an issue with yours?
      I called a plumber because of the occasional smell. He said everything checked good and didn't see a problem (no odor that day). A few days later it came back. I stepped in the shower and water shot out...pulled the cover plate and the gasket to see the underside was flooded.

    • @lisaac90
      @lisaac90  Год назад +1

      @@berryvanhook2169 How I could tell was much more obvious for me, my carpet flooring in the room sharing wall with shower was soaking wet. I stopped using that shower and used my dehumidifier to dry out the carpet and it stopped getting wet so I knew it was the shower. Then I looked at the drain and saw that it didn't have a good seal. The plumber I called out confirmed it for me. Told me I could reseal it with caulk as a cheap temporary fix but that would only last a few months. The wing tite drain was the long term solution.

      @@lisaac90 Removing it was about 2hrs. Following your lead definitely helped, however my set up does not allow for the new drain. There is concrete all around my pipe and under the pan :/

    • @lisaac90
      @lisaac90  8 месяцев назад +1

      Good to keep in mind. I used a dehumidifier to dry everything out first before sealing things. I saw no mold though because it was just going into dirt under my house.

      @@lisaac90 okay thank you for the reply. My elderly neighbor has a missing flange on her drain and the bathroom smells like mold. I told her about this product and I have a handyman service so I wasn’t if I should install one of these for her or not. Otherwise I will send her to my friend who owns a plumbing business but i was trying to see if there was a way to save her money.
      Do you feel like this was a good proper fix??
      Thank you again for taking your time to make this video. It’s really cool you did this for people to view.

    • @lisaac90
      @lisaac90  8 месяцев назад

      @wyattsdad8561 hmm.. for my situation it made sense and was far cheaper. I think the wingtite drain works but I caulked the top around the pipe, I didn't trust the o ring alone. I would guess if there bathroom smells moldy it would be helpful for them to have a dehumidifier to keep things drier. Even if the drain works, if they don't properly get the steam out its still going to be moldy.
      I'm not a professional plumber. I'm just a broke home owner doing my best with what I got. The plumber told me the only way they could fix my drain was ripping out and replacing my entire shower stall for like 4 or 5 thousand. So I did this and it's working great for me. I'd know if it was leaking again because it makes my carpet on the wall behind shower wet. That's how I found out the first time.
      A good dehumidifier is usually like a hundred bucks or so and ensures everything's dry no matter what.
