Snark SN2 Tuner - Detailed Tutorial on Tuning for Beginners

- Jeff from kidsguitar3 shows beginners how to use the Snark-SN2 tuner. Used to recommend this tuner for ease of use and visability, however there are some problems with reliable power. Tuning is crucial for playing the guitar and requires a lot of attention, especially for beginners.
Need to know th names of the strings, so remember this sentence:
Elephants And Donkeys Got Big Ears - 6th thru 1st string on the guitar
Order of notes, low to high:
A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G # | A A# etc
OH MY GOD- I'VE BEEN USING IT THE WRONG WAY THE ENTIRE TIME?!
HOLY **ING **!
I have used this tuner for.... ever! I have always thought that I was supposed to put it on the 1st fret, but oh my god, this explains so much!
THANK YOU VERY VERY VERY VERY MUCH :D!
Just want to thank you for posting this video. It has been extremely helpful for me and my daughter on how to use the snark tunner. The information you also provided on the chords and notes was useful for us to determine if the guitar was too flat or too sharp. Thank you!
Thank you so much!! I just bought my first guitar and I was very confused trying to use my snark tuner! Now my chords sound perfect!!
Bought one from a guitar 🎸 store awhile back forget what I paid for it but best money ever spent and couldn't live without it. Just tuned down for the first time and wow.
Just received the snark super tight tuner for my banjo. Tutorial very helpful. So much easier than using pitch tuners . Thank you
Thank you for the tutorial. I didn’t know how to use the tuner, I just bought few hours ago. I was not sure how to use it. With your tutorial I am more clear and able to tune my guitar.
Such a great tutorial. If you're flat (in the red) go counter-clockwise (left). If you're sharp (in the yellow) go clockwise (right).
Great tutorial on the Snark clip on tuner...You are a good teacher! Thank you from a beginner !
thanks i have watched so much tutorials on tuning and I finally get it thanks to your thoroughness. thank you for defining terms and showing the chromatic scale and covering a little about music theory. I was getting confused when I saw sharps but was able to complete. If you make more videos I will definitely watch them. thanks so much!
I'm brand new to guitar and had NO IDEA how to use my FZOne tuner. This video helped me tremendously! THANK YOU
5:30 is where he shows you how to use the tuner.
When the green light goes on, it makes me happy- that's why I like it. I'm not that concerned about where the note is- just give me the green light-
To tune down a half step, flatten the E strings to an E flat (or D sharp), A to G sharp, D to C sharp, G to F sharp, B to a B flat (or A sharp)
I'm alright with concert. Define an 'advanced player', please.
one of my favorite tuners....i was given one in a raffle and been a fan and user ever since.
I gotta agree I got this at my local music shop and Not only is it the tightest tuner I've ever used. But it only picks up the vibrations of the guitar! So you don't need prefect silence to tune up.
Blows korg and others out of the water!
Go SNARK !!! :)
Tks it's the first time that I tune my guitar and I did it, thanks to this video. Tks and god bless you!!
I got an ST-2 model but for just tuning the strings, your video does the trick...
I’ll learn more on how to use it later, but I mainly just want to tune My guitar...
Thanks
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼☮️
I got a fender headstock tuner I love it. For using vibration I can't believe how accurate it is. I might get one of these as a backup. Nice thing about a Stratocaster is the headstock won't get messed up. On a Epiphone or Gibson or something with a painted headstock these will wear the paint job eventually. I hear good things about these I'd get one if I needed a tuner. Absolutely.
Very informative and quite helpful. Thank you!
Great question, this used to be a problem for me, too, especially with the lower strings. It helps to learn how to tune to the other strings on your guitar, ie, 5th fret on 6th string should sound the same as the 5th string open. If you're putting on new strings, only change 1 or 2 at a time and you can compare them with the other strings, ie, the 10th fret on the low E string should sound close to the 4th string open (D). Another way is to compare it with another guitar if available.
Hi ! First time viewer. Thank you, Thank you ! You truly covered everything & then some. So CLEAR ! Not once did I have to rewind to see or hear something better. I did PAUSE TO TAKE NOTES ! I’m not kidding either. I want to remember. This is going to save me so much time. One question
Why does my G string seems to go out of tune quick. Also it doesn’t go in tune as smooth as rest of strings slightest touch of key either way, it’s out of tune.
Bought guitar new 1 or 2 yrs ago & take care of it. Sounds crazy I know
Thank you so much for watching! It sounds like a problem with your tuning key or how the string is wound around it. Try putting on a new string, check out some youtube vids to make sure its put on properly (sorry, I don't know if youre experienced at it!). If that doesn't fix it, the tuner may need to be replaced. Take to a reputable shop to have it checked out. Good luck!
very good tutorial. just bought the sn8. can't wait to try it on my violin.
i got a snark tuner and its worked fine for me till today after tuning my electric guitar by it i played the guitar and it was still out of tune i did this a few times and the guitar dident tune according to the snark set to vib so i used a different tuner and had better luck there so whats the problem there
I hate to repeat myself, but I guess alot of people are making the same mistake. Always go below the desired note, by at least a tone or 2, and then bring it UP till the string is in tune. That way the tension on the string is as taut as possible, eliminating any slack. Never tune "down" to the correct note. I guess that's why people say, "tune your guitar UP." Or "Tune up."
omg this has helped me soooooo much! when i tune my guitar it comes up with all these different letters and now i know how to change that, thankyou!!
No lie it won't work for me
I used one for my gutair and banjo to this tuner is so easy to use
I understand how this tuner works now thanks to you, but I what I don't understand is how much tension should I be putting on my strings? In order to tune some of my strings, I had to tighten them a lot creating a lot of tension. Some of them I loosened a lot. I am confused on which way I need to go. I am just afraid of breaking my strings.
Yes it can. The SN 6 by Snark is supposed to be designed for the higher frequencies of a ukelele, but I've used the SN1 or SN2 for my uke, no problems.
Yes, it does. Think of it as 6 double strings. The note name is the samefor strings 1 and 2, double E strings and double B strings. Strings 3 through 6 are the same note but one octave apart. Strings 3 has a normal G strings and the thinner one below it is an octave higher, the same for the D, A & E string. The tuner won't pick up the change in octaves, you'll have to use your ear. I would suggest tuning the heavier one first, then tune the lighter one an octave higher. Hope this makes sense.
Sounds like your low E is flat. Tighten the string until it registers E. If it says your D ( 4th string? ) is E, that means it is sharp and the string needs to be loosened until it reads D. Hope this helps
Great tuner for all levels. If your action is too high notes like A on the 3rd string will run sharp.
Good chance your unit needs calibrated then. Like all tuners they aren't perfect forever. Just like guitar strings drop out of tune, a tuner does as well. I come from a piano background and decided to pick one up anyway to make tuning easier. With transpose options, metronome with bpm settings it made this an easy choice at around 20 usd. And after calibration I get a really good tuning to my liking every time in a minute.
Sorry for the late reply. The SN2 will work on a woodwind instrument. It can tune by vibration (for stringed instruments) or with it's microphone. It works equally well both ways.
Mine's an ST 2. Kept the box and leaflet. Looks identical to yours. Exact same colour as yours.
Finally after many months of just sticking it on the headstock on vibrate mode without having to touch any of the wee buttons, no tuning problems, eventually the screen began to fade.
Today , new 3 volt battery. Correctly put in. Not working. Tried another new 3 volt battery from the same good pack. Still not working. Batteries placed up, correct facing. Old battery is dry, therefore no leakage into unit.
What's going wrong?
@TheNDex So try retuning and you may have to just loosen the E string. If this doesn't work, it may be defective. Let me know what happens.
SN2 tuner works great. Was ready to go, right out of the box.
your video was extremely useful.
Can you select D standard, and is it just the case of clicking down 2 half steps... thanks
Thanks but I wasn't asking that, I meant the tuner. can you select D standard and the tuner calibrates itself to D so you can use it as normal
nice video. i just got mine a few days ago. I have a question though, when i play the 6 string (E) on the guitar. on the snark it gives me the 2nd string (G). do you think mines defective?
This will work with any instrument, including a uke. Snark has recently made a version (SN6) which is specifcly for ukeleles, supposedly made for the specific frequencies, I've used the SN1 and SN2 on my uke without a problem.
i bought a snark from my local music store, and mine doesn't have those features mine has only the power button to turn on, does that mean mines an older version or a newer one?and it says GUITAR BASS & VIOLIN TUNER, by the battery. and mine works great, i just wanted to no
Pluck the string in the playing position.
Too close to the nut and it's gonna be sharp.
Too close to the saddle and it will be flat.
Pluck the string where you're gonna play it.
Not bad advice- the problem is, snark tuners are not accurate- they refuse to print their specs on accuracy-
Not sure I understand your question.... tune the strings as described in the video. This is standard tuning. You need to learn the chords and follow the changes in the songs, ie, play E, then G chord. If you mean the key of the song changes from E to G, you wouldn't retune. You would use a capo or figure out the new chords. Hope this helps!
I know when buying DAddario strings on the back of the box they come in they have a tension scale in lbs per string giving you a idea of how much tension each string takes using a 25 1/2 scale length measurement
hi i bought this snark n when impluck a string. all letters are behind. my e is d. my g is f ect. n with those letters showing i still tune to the middle now it sounds horrible plz help :(
thank you thank you. thought i would never learn to tune! this video proved me wrong!
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped! This is a very important skill for a musician! I'm amazed at all the out of tune vids on RUclips.
Thank you for helping me tune the guitar I get so scared tuning the guitar sometimes afraid that I will break the string and I have to ask an expert or my teacher to show me but now I can do it I'm just a beginner that's why!
can i tune my classic guitar with it? i have a lot of trouble tunning my classic guitar with a regular tuner.
Glad it helped. Tuning is an important skill for guitarists.
Is batteries included if not where do we buy them
Thank you thank you. I am so excited to learn to play, wanna learn rock/metal
thank you so much! will have to check out other vids of yours.
It is always good practice to tune up.
If a string is sharp, loosen it below pitch and tune it up. It stays in tune longer….
Found out this off the great Joe Walsh after years of tuning it wrong😁
I was wondering if this works on a ukulele or if I need to get a separate tuner for that?
So some songs the chords are changed around, for example, E to G and B to A, do I keep tuning the guitar and ignore the green arrow and keep tuning the E string until the tuner picks up a G?
Thank you for this!!!!!!
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
This is the SN 5 tuner and doesn't have as many features as the red SN2, but is probably still very accurate and simple to use. I think yours does not have a microphone so it only tunes on vibration.
I have the SN-8(B) & I'm lost have no Idea how to use it can you please help me.
@TheNDex I'm not sure I understand. When you try to tune the heaviest or 6th string E, it registers as a G note? If this is true, your 6th string can possibly be tuned sharp or too tight, up to the G note. Compare the low E sound on your guitar to the E on the video to see if they sound similar or if your E string sounds a lot higher pitched.
The tuners have been very accurate so you might not be tuned properly. Also, try the mic feature on your Snark and see what teh vid low E string is
I'm using an epiphone electric with mine and every time i want to tune my low E string it says its either D or C#
im in a completely quiet environment there shouldn't be anything affecting the sound.
and I'm not sure how to tune it by ear when the low E is screwed up
@kidsguitar3
it worked, this was my first time tuning lol thx
so i can do that with this tuner?
Just bought a Danelectro 12 string.and I've got the 6th thru 1st. strings tuned up. my question is on the tuner display each increment is what ? I was told the 2nd. strings on the 12 string are tuned 1 octave higher for each pair.
The snark tuner works great... thanks for the video!
Yes it is! I really think that tuning is a difficult skill, especially for beginners, and needs a lot of work. Most tutorials don't teach students what being flat or sharp is and how to turn your turners,
I have been looking all over RUclips to find thos
👋
Glad it helped! Tuning is half the battle!
How about if I'm trying to tune a small 🎸 help me please
I have a Super Snark tuner , when I'm tuning I never see a arrow!I either see red or green or blue. I'm assuming color blue ears I'm tuned?
You are correct!
440 is the regular tuning? When mine is at 440 it cant reach the E, its really tight but it only says D :/, my guitar string snapped :
Thanks so much!
What do the buttons on the back do i pushed them a few times and i think it did something to it, like i put new strings on and the e string didnt show e until i kept turning it till it was super tight like way more than it should be
Like ive been using this tuner a while and its been great but when i touched the back buttons it seemed to change the way the tuner works and its driving me crazy lol do back butttons have something to do with changing the. Keys like to get it to standard tuning the strings have to be be super tight
Thank you. Great video!
Awesome. Thank you so much. Such a help.
I recently purchased a Fender tuner and found out a little more info.....you can toggle thru the c(chromatic), g(guitar), b(bass), v(violin) and u(ukele) settings. The (c)chromatic setting will tell you what your current pitch is at, while the (g)guitar setting will help you tune each string, as long as you are near that pitch. I will be doing a tutorial on these features soon.
thank u man. it was great help
What batteries does it take
I just got an electric guitar and wanted to know if these would work on it and if you know anything about amps please help me i have a Hollinger BC-08
Theses tuners will definitely work and an electric guitar. sorry, I don't know much about amps
thats alright thanks for replying though
Kyle Berry crazy good amp, good price too.

I gotta get a new battery mines not nice and bright like that one. Cant complain, had it fir a year. Nice product.
I'm thinking you mean dropping all of the strings 2 whole steps. So tune the strings as following:
6th = C, 5th = F, 4th = Bb or A#, 3rd = Eb or D#, 2nd = G, 1st = C
To tune to D standard, you will tune the strings down a whole step or one letter, ie, 6ht E to D, 5th A to G, 4th D to C, 3rd G to F, 2nd B to A, 1st E to D
DGCFAD
thank you so much for the video !!!! awesome!!!! learned so much!!!!
@SugarGossip Glad it helped!
How do you know what octave your in? I have trouble after stringing. How do you know if your at the beginning or the end?.
Not familiar with this tuner, sounds like the 1st button might move you to different pitches, ie C, G or B (not sure what v or u is). On the calibration button, you usually want it to be at 440, which is standard tuning. On some recordings, the guitarist may be tuned a little flat so this button could help you play to that recording if you set the calibration to say 436 ( for example). Hope this helps
"v" is for violin and "u" is for ukelele. What I want to know is why my red shark tuner reads the notes sharp. Meaning the marker is green but the letter says A#. This must be a calibration issue but I don't know how to fix it.
After having a few Snark tuners for a few months, I have come across some problems with batteries or "shorts" in the circuitry.I will try to do some research and get in touch Snark.I do like the ease of functions and price, but I do have concerns about the battery life and the fragility of the tuner. Thanks for your comment. In case it's never been stated, I have no relationship with Snark, I only did a tutorial because I initially liked the tuner and tuning is a big part of playing the guitar
I'm wondering about the pitch sensitivity of the tuner. Will it detect 1/10th of a semi tone? 1/25th of a semitone? or mabye 1/100th of a semi-tone?. How accurate is the tuner, in these mathematical terms? It says "tunes tighter" but wont say where it is, or where it was.
Thank u so much.
on the g string do i tune it to the first g or second after I restring it
thank u so much. just bought my tuner today, sounds much better, big help, EADGBE
This was a life saver!! Thank you thank you thank you!!
i cant either any ideas?
You sure can. Start with your low E string and loosen it until the C note registers. Go to the A (5th) and tune that down until it registers to an F and keep going for the rest of the strings.
what is the fat piece on the bottom called ???
Thanks for the awesome tutorial.
When your tuning it, do you touch the fret or just strike the chord and based off of what key it strikes and it's in the middle means its in tune?
I have a dillema. Bare with me here, I’m new to this! I’m trying to tune the higher E string. My Snark’s green arrow lights up when I strum it. According to the video I’ve tuned it correctly. But instead of illuminating an E, a D# is illuminated. I have an acoustic guitar and my Snark is set to vibration only and 440. Is it supposed to be like this?
If the D# is illuminated, the string is still flat. Did you try tightening it until the E is illuminated?
What are all the other buttons for?
Press the round black button near the two arrows to change the reference pitch. The default is 440 Hz which is what most people use. Press the up or down triangular buttons to select a new tuning reference. Pressing the power switch again will reset the tuner to A-440 .
The red button on the side brings up the metronome which is only visual.
The silver button on the side toggles between the microphone or vibration method of tuning. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
so when its in the middle its tuned???
