The song is about the different stages of grief. The denial, the anger, so on and so on. The long, repetitive instrumental is supposed to mimic time slowing down as his immanent demise approaches. Until finally, acceptance. He bellows out Hallowed Be Thy Name, and gives his soul over to God. One of their great story telling songs.

Maiden!! Do "Aces High," "The Trooper," "Run to the Hills," or "Flight of Icarus" (or all, lol). Cliff, this band is fire! My husband played this solo with another guitarist. It's done with 2 guitars. Usually, the melody is created first. Drums and bass are added next. I wish I could take you back, brother. Arena rock. It was electric.

You should do Rime of the ancient mariner or Phantom of the opera. Or try Nightwish a symphonic Metal band from Finland with a 6 ft tall valkyrie as the front woman. A song from the new album perfume of the timeless or an oldie Ghost love score epic

You might want to think about "Flight of Icarus." Steve Harris (the bassist) does most of the writing and is a force to be reckoned with in his own right. His tone, sound, and playing style are VERY much his signature, and NOBODY does it better. It is often referred to as a "galloping bass line" and definitely drives the music.

This isn't rock, this is HEAVY METAL! Very different. In fact, this is the greatest Heavy Metal track ever written. It is the very DEFINITION of the genre, it's the first song you play to demonstrate the genre to a complete newbie. Clive Burr's intricate pounding drums, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith's face melting guitars, Steve Harris' galloping bass triples, and the greatest vocalist rock and Heavy Metal has ever seen from the mighty Bruce Dickinson. Complete virtuoso GENIUS. Look up the live video The Beast Over Hammersmith from 1982 to actually SEE them pull off this masterpiece.
Your assertion that hip hop is DEEPER lyrically is however possibly the single most nonsensical statement I have ever heard on the internet, PERIOD!

I'm a vocalist/lyricist in a death metal band. 90% of the time I wait to hear a song being made, and then write the lyrics. Something in the guitars will pop an image or thought in my head, and I roll with it, and add, delete, or move around words/verses, and change cadence or vocal arrangements as the song transforms. Sometimes I will already have lyrics and theme written and wait to hear the song thst just fits!
Not as complex as hip hop (huge hip hop head), with an the double, triple meaning and acrobatics.

I don't think anyone needs to disrespect any other genres of music. I see music as a museum. I have my favorite style and wing of the art museum but I like walking through other wings as well. The intricacies of Iron Maiden and when you go further the intricacies of other bands such as dream theater is definitely something to behold. But so is the lyricism of Eminem. It's not comparable. The simple beats of Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg in the 90s, well not very sophisticated compared to power metal and other forms of metal, was still pleasing to my ear. In the end that's all that really counts.

Growing up I had art and music teachers telling me that the artwork was good but the music was garbage. Clearly they never actually listened or didn't know what they were talking about.
Music critics and snobs suggested that Steve Harris's lyrics and themes were merely the Coles Notes versions of nothing but borrowed themes. It's nice to hear someone appreciate all that is great about it, upon first listen 🤘

If you really delve into the huge changes in music, it stated when they took music classes in school. For some the only exposure to instruments was through school, when they took that out of school those with music in their blood had to reinvent. The saddest thing, is for me is music has a heart and soul, without the instruments its lost the soul

Cliff, rock/metal is not as lyric heavy as rap; however the subject matter is generally way deeper and often goes to dark places in a way that rap could ever do! It’s not just the lyrics, it’s also the composition of the music that sets a mood for the lyrics! Great reaction! Please consider doing Metallica-fade to black or for whom the bell tolls! The album versions or live either way is great! Thanks

As a counterpart to all the "live!!!" people, who of course are entitled to their opinion, I prefer the studio version. Bruce's singing is much more on key here, and the lyrics have more room to breathe in the original tempo. I will say that the instrumentals are almost studio level on the Hammersmith 1982 version.
Don't get me wrong: Bruce's performance is certainly impressive in the live version, but there's a few extended notes in there that are painfully off key to those of us who have an ear for such things. In the studio version, he's 100% professional.

'YES', you did the wrong version of this song...Hello my name is Brian from White Bear Lake, Minnesota...You have watched the Live 1982 version of 'Hallowed Be Thy Name', it is considered to be the best rock video ever made, singer Bruce Dickinson sings his butt off in this video, you can really hear his operatic voice come out in this song, with his long vabratos, and long notes, not to mention his vocal range. In my opinion this why i think every other rock singer secretly wishes that they could sing like Bruce could when he was in his prime. Pay attention to the long note in the beggining of the song, and the 2 long notes at end of song, they are 'EPIC'...The song is about a man being sent to the gallows to be hanged and he is looking back on his life. Most of Iron Maiden's songs are about an important event that has happened in history. So watch this video for sure, it is amazing !!!...Must Watch.
    Thank You 🤘🤘

Ok, good entry point to our best metal band from over here in the UK.
Yes, definitely do the live performance that's already been posted.
But I'd like to add a few others..
And has everyone noticed that this band Iron Maidens tunes are all story based. A little bit like Ren's tunes.? If you don't know of Ren check out his Utube channel and join 1.69m Renagades.
    So back to Iron Maiden.
    Rhyme of the ancient mariner.
Run to the Hills.!! Both storyline driven.!!
And my last recommendation, because there's too many albums to lists all my best Iron Maiden tunes from is..... The number of the beast... 666.. Mind blowing Iron Maiden.!!!
Enjoy everyone, and prepare to have you minds blowen by both Iron Maiden and Ren.!!
    Thank me later. 👍👍👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧✌️🤙👍

Never the album version with these classics dude. Try "Live at The Rock" in Rio....

I disagree. I think it varies from song to song

No, in general it’s best to do the album version first. This song is one of the exceptions.

Can't deny those rock solid Maiden Live albums.
But without the album cut, there'd be no "Maiden Japan" and we wouldn't be fans.
Sure, a rare few experienced them live, first.
Best live Metal band ever. 17 times !!!
      Not One Bad Show !
But c'mon, it was those studio albums that rocked us to sleep!😅

Album version is what the band wants you to hear first...that's why it's on the album lol
If you appreciate what the album version sounds like, and you see a great live rendition of it, it doesn't take away from your first listen, it only adds to it.
I think of Rush in this respect. When I first heard them on the radio, got the album, and eventually saw how incredible they are live, it only made me more of a fan. I saw them close to a dozen times, over a decade apart, they really do sound as good live as they do on the albums. Incredible musicians, NP on the drums wasn't even human lol
