Yes, we know it's old. But Toyota did make a few changes for 2022 so we figured we'd show you guys what they are. We're expecting Toyota to show us a new version by the end of this year. Are you excited for the new 2023 model, or would you rather just buy the current model?

@@paladin3116 you can buy one with 50k miles for 10k less if you're lucky, just saying. Maybe 10k is a big deal to some people but these hold value well enough that unless you're buying an older 75-100k mile car you might as well just get new. Its really the crappy 5 speed tranny than hunts for gears that brings down the 4runner IMO

Love the timeless design, easy to repair, parts are in abundance, a decade+ supply chain built up around this car. Still built in Japan, 4.0 liter V6, no turbos. Dinosaur 5 speed transmission that will probably outlast the frame in the car. On top of that you can basically drive it *anywhere* in the world. One of a kind. Everyone who buys one of these knows it’s value because it’s the last of an era of Japanese trucks and iconic Toyota reliability.
The new 6th gen 4Runner will probably have a lot of improvements and creature comforts added but it will not be the same 4Runner.
    Appreciate greatness.

Sometimes it's refreshing to see a car like this. Toyota could only do so much with this truck, but honestly, it's actually really charming because of its age and because of how timeless it is for such an old design. I mean this, the Frontier, the Sequoia, the X-terra (don't know if that thing exists anymore), the Z, the GT-R (even though those are sports cars, it's refreshing how analog both those are) just brings you back in time, and sometimes, that's all you need.

I don't have any market research data, but I would argue that the overwhelming majority of 4Runner buyers are NOT all that 'into' technology, especially the esoteric stuff like heated steering wheels, automatic lift gates, 52" LCD screens, etc. There are certainly enough vehicles that have all that stuff.........and more, and yet, my understanding is that Toyota has been selling every single 4Runner they can manufacture, for about the last 10 years........even to the point where 4Runner's sell at MSRP and it's nearly impossible to move a dealer off of that, due to demand.
Toyota truck and SUV buyers seem to be about old-school reliability and the tried and true. I have seen many Mercedes Benz's, Jeeps, Fords, and Chevys on the side of the road, however, I cannot recall ever seeing a Toyota 4Runner, Sequoia, Tundra, Tacoma, Highlander, or Land Cruiser on the side of the road with hazards on and the hood up.
My truck is 10 years old, has none of the "must have" features of today, and I do not miss any of those features, because it runs like a fine Swiss timepiece. I'm also not enthralled by the idea that so many of the people on the road with me, are reclined back in massaging seats, watching a movie on the 50" center screen, and letting the vehicle make all the decisions, as they're falling asleep while doing 75mph.

I'm currently driving my first car a 2000 4Runner and I did have my 3rd car a 2016 4Runner but now my mom has that one. (Sick of paying 400 a month for it) I had so much fun with the 2016 going into areas after it snowed and just sliding around and covering it with mud. It was very practical with reclining rear seats and despite being the base model had many options like the sun roof, heated seats, and leather everywhere. Everything is so bulky and satisfying to touch (except the door release inside which was just plastic I was in a Ford Escape that had cheap plastic everywhere but solid metal door openers)
The only annoying bit about the 2016 was there's this compart door in the cargo area that rattles against the plastics sometimes. Also like he said no handle on the drivers side. I hate that. I added a brush guard, led bulbs, window tint, etc. Needless to say my parents love driving it and I'm stressed at how well they will take care of it.
Toyot a is the only possible brand I'll ever buy. Made the mistake of buying a Volvo. Nothing from across the pond ever again after that.

The 4 Runner is one of the oldest, strongest trued and true vehicles on the market for over 35 years, some things are fine just fine the way they are, but those damn EPA regulations being so strict these days are trying to electric and make cars more efficient, but on the real, better gas mileage and a 8 or 9 speed AT, and larger towing package with more power & torque wouldn't hurt at all. This is one of the only body on frame acutual SUV's we have left, Just cause something works well doesn't mean it can't be improved. TRD with some other mods wouldn't hurt either

Toyota makes 4runner in 2WD. Also I sell them and the Pro has consistently paced purchase price in resale since I've been selling Toyota since 2014. Not including fees, most pro owners see their entire investment back if the sell between 3-5 years, with average miles on it.

I’m in between the Ram 1500 and 4Runner. As I do more research I’m leaning towards the 4Runner as it’s reliable and holds it value. As I’m hearing the power train has not changed since 2002 it give me the “if it’s not broke why fix it”. Good job Toyota, might be owning a 4Runner soon!

If you don't need the extra towing capacity, then 100% get the 4R. I've had a 97', 08', and now this lime rush version. I could still reliably drive either of my previous runners. I'll most likely be a 4R owner for life.

The appeal is the ruggedness of being on frame versus unibody. Those who love the Forerunner, love it for the longevity and history it stands for over the years. Offroad vehicles are quite lacking when they become unibody due to the body flex. We have to ask why is it so popular when there are better riding, better comfort features, better steering, etc?? It is popular because it did not change the equation of what makes it great.

Might be ancient but it will take good care of me as I will do the same to it from the mile one. And if I feel like it, I will buy me a 6th gen, but only after a year or two. Not a good idea to buy the first edition of a vehicle after such a huge change.

Now I have a 2000 4Runner manual. Last year they offered one in the US. I’ll keep my old one as long as I can. But I’ll never buy an auto🥱 I would go right down to the dealership today and buy one if they offered the 4Runner in a manual again. And so would many others. I have a 21 TRD OFF ROAD. Pro is awesome…but I find off road model to be better value. My interior is identical to the pro…just missing the dual zone AC. I also had the TRD wheels and off road tires added by the dealer. I don’t have the heritage grill, roof rack, or shocks. But all the other off road goodies are there. If you aren’t a serious off road driver…take a step down to the off road model.

Thank God not a full digital display...! would remove the character of the vehicle . A bit too plasticky but the 8" display is pretty nice to live with. Just enough old school mixed with enough tech to be a reliable and ancient TRUCK that isnt copying all the crossovers . LOVE it. Except for the buttons for fan speed. Rather have the ORP's knobs for certain. Hate taking eyes off the road to turn the heat lower that sucks. The rear seats DO offer a little recline, the lever is on the side hidden by seatbelt I believe. I agree on the seats being low and I'm not tall. Looking into seat-jacker spacers. One good 4Runner tip: in an Off-Road premium, you do not have the same exhaust noise and the Pro. Pretty good review here though .. nice job !
