This is exactly what I did with my jelly gouache However, I found out later that warm water can actually help speed up the process. But I found it very therapeutic now once a month I give it a good spray down and then after I sprayed it with water, I do one spritz of alcohol spray on the top so I don’t get any mould and it stays nice and creamy. I used ice cream sticks and tooth picks and didn’t have to throw any paint out

I have this palette and had the exact same thing happen to me. How I rectified this was time consuming, but it did work. I would say it took me tops an hour and a half to bring the cups back to jelly consistency. I added four to five drops of glycerin with a pipette. Depending upon how dried and hard they are, I did use more. I let them sit for five minutes or so. I used a palette knife to mix the glycerin into it and then once I got a good mix going, I used stout toothpicks to stir each cup, as well as a second one to scrape off the excess paint. I cut a piece of thin foam sheet (used for packing) to fit inside of the lid. The reason why these dry up is because there is not a good enough seal. I also put the palette inside of two, two gallon Ziploc bags. Since I did this months ago, I opened it up a few days ago and the cups were fine. I just stirred them. The rubbing alcohol and water mixture misted over the top helps with film issues.

I’ve never used jelly gouache. However, I have some watercolor tubes that I recently found in my studio from 1997! That’s right, 1997, Windsor and Newton. They were as hard as a rock just like these jelly gouaches so I did the same exact thing. I took a pair of pliers to crack the tubes, almost like cracking, lobster claws, and the paper crumbled, and I had these chunks of dried out watercolor, that I submerged in water. After a couple of days, it’s softened. I was able to use them as if they were brand new, and the color was fine. I couldn’t believe it!

Wow! I never would've considered rewetting an entire tube of dried out watercolor. I know they never go bad as I've seen Super Rae Dizzle & other YTers use 70+ year old pallets. I hope it never happens, but I always thought I'd use a dried out tube as I would a pan pallet. The fact that dried paint is still in excellent condition is one of my favorite things about the medium. It's really cool to know that you were able to do that.

I've restored mine more than once. And then the last time I did it, I put some of the gouache in a different palette so I could rewet a smaller bit, which works more quickly and easily. And I honestly love my jelly gouache, although I doubt I'll ever use it up. Still love. Guilt-free gouache that works okay is freeing.

Hello Kristy 👋 I’m a brand new sub. I was watching your video on how to sketch with a paintbrush. I’m leaving a comment here bc I didn’t know if you read comments on older posts. I found you on Amazon when I went looking for an adult water coloring book for water color pencils. I bought one of your books and was pleasantly pleased. I wanted to tell you that I was laughing pretty hard on the bumble bee you tried to draw😂. I’m sooooo glad you left that in there! It boosted my confidence seeing that you actually make mistakes like me😀 Anyway, I’ve since bought one of your watercolor palettes and a set of paint brushes. I’m on my way to learn how to paint loosely. I started out with pencil and charcoal drawings. I can draw, but trying to paint is a whole lot different for me. Thank you for all you do to help us become better artists. You have a loyal fan here!😃♥️♥️

I totally just revived my himis last week!! I did a similar process though mine weren’t as thirsty as yours, I dumped it out onto my glass pallet (it’s totally just a cutting board) used a pallet knife, added water a bit at a time and remixed it with a pallet knife. It helped with the big bits and no splashing 😂 but it was so fun and helped my mood that night/next day. I almost get more joy out of reviving them than I do painting with them 😅 anyways, I love your strawberries 🍓!!

I absolutely love gouache! It’s so versatile. I have reproduced some of my watercolor paintings in gouache and it’s hard to tell the difference. I have both tube gouache and Himi and I do spray my palettes regularly. The only problem I ever had was with the big set of Anigoni - it got mold inside in spite of occasional spritzes with alcohol. I put my most frequently used colors into a sealed watercolor palette and keep it beside me all the time. Even when I’m using watercolor, I occasionally grab something from the gouache palette to add in. I want to thank you for your videos - your enthusiasm is contagious!😊❤️

  • @rainastor4789
    @rainastor4789 Год назад +8

I have not read all the comments so I’m sorry if I am being redundant. The way I seal the lid on mine is to sort of shove the lid in the opposite direction away from me (it just moves a tiny bit) and then click the side closest to me. Turn a quarter turn and repeat, repeat, repeat. It takes that fraction of a push in the opposite direction in order for each side to “lock.” I hope this helps and wonder if anyone else has better ideas.

And to my surprise I was able to paint a pretty decent painting with it, but it may also be that I’m finally starting to understand the water ratio after using the professional brands first. Same mix reconstituted o l d gessos, matte mediums, gloss a,d texture pastes, deco art acrylic paints, dylusions acrylic paints and maintains mold free watercolor palettes.
Fyi, didn't dilute the colors. Mixed cups w/a palette knife or a smalll silicone brush ( Michael's hobby section...also ii use these for all skin and makeup creams in jars or tubes), or wooden toothpicks. And Yay for aprons, mixers, paper towels & results.

Kristy Rice you are a hoot to watch. So much fun and I'm learning new techniques from your videos and I do I love gouache and watercolor both over plastic(acrylics) Gouache in French actually means watercolor. Gouache is opaque as she said and why I love it and because its none toxic and environmentally friendly as well as watercolors are. I can do the same with gouache I use to do with acrylic. And something very special about watercolor and outdoors in summer for me. I no longer will purchase acrylic trying to be more eco and env aware. I'm just a playful painter and not a professional at all but I will say Miya Himi gouache is not old school in my book and even tube paints dry up if neglected. I love the himi pallet because I can refill them. Had my same himi gouache for 5 years and refill them. Alot of gouache is made the same its pigment and gum arabic. So student or professional is pretty much the simular except for the price I've notice and everyone is partial or use to their own brands and thats cool. I've never had gouache dry up like that bad ever, even when I left lid off a day. However they sale the moisturizer spray for gouache but I simply put a few small drops of vegetable glycerin and a couple drops alcohol in my water bottle to prevent mildew and keep my gouache moist. Gouache does have to be sprayed regularly even if sqeezed into travel pallet. So much Himi hate been circulating youtubes the last few weeks. But I'm glad it all turned out with a pretty painting cause Kristy Rice our girl got mad talent. Its always more about what the artist can do. Your watercolor brand is beautiful thats one thing for sure.

Its called Himi moisturize mildew spray. Not popular because many simply make their own by putting a couple drops glycerin and a drop or 2 of rubbing alcohol in a water spray misting bottle. A few drops of essential oils can work as well. Just do some Google research for suggestions.

Maybe it would help to store the Himi case in a clear plastic zip lock food storage bag to hold down the amount of evaporation. I have heard, though, that some gouache brands get moldy. I think I would be experimenting with adding a drop or two of bleach, or dish washing liquid to my spritz water and those discarded paint globs to see if they were compatible with the paint while inhibiting mold growth. Come to think of it, borax (20 Mule Team laundry additive) is said to be the one true mold killer. Maybe I'd also add a dash of borax to my spritz water just to see what happens with my globs. Just a train of thought. 💐

It is time consuming, bit I also find it to be kind of a zen thing. If I'm between big projects, I'll clean palettes and work on my gouache maintenance. Yes, this is a cheap medium, but it's great when I just want to play with paint without a ton of fuss. I recently completely cleaned and deconstructed it to clean every nook to make sure it sealed as tightly as possible. I've had the palette for over two years, and it's taken a little work to maintain. However, the value for money can't be beat to me.

I loved this video. I was super wondering if it would dry out and, if so, would it revive. So thank you ❤. Seriously satisfying. Second are you maintaining your set? Third are you using your set?
I would love to see you do some gouache painting tutorials please. Simple ones to get me started.
Mu question remains is gouache another form of acrylic. I do not do well with acrylic. It does not come naturally. I am improving and therefore enjoying it more, but watercolour is my thing (as well as a few others 😀). Yet, I cannot get into a gouache style where I can paint something.I can figure out how to paint anything in watercolour. While I might not have the skill or talent to get the exact picture in my head on the paper, in theory I know how to. Slowly I am getting better. For example I can get light and medium, but not dark enough tones. I am getting better at it. The point is that I know how, just time, experience, and practice.
In addition your fig painting helped tremendously 😅. Thank you ❤.
So back to gouache. I cannot figure out how to work it into paintings, except a basic background, flower or flower pot with flowers/plants. That is extremely limiting to say the least.
I would love to paint a parrot with all those bright, beautiful colored features, but I do not know how to put knowledge together to get a result in gouache. I can watercolour a parrot (maybe again not with the dark values I want, maybe now after your fig mystery solution 😂), but I can. I do not even know how to conceptualize it in gouache.
    Thank you.

I was watching an interesting video on the Himi and learnt something that was most likely valuable in keeping the Himi Paints viable to paint with at all time and that was to ???? Store them in the FRIDGE ! Yep .... the fridge apparently it stops them drying out and also inhibits the growth of mould that can occur also as they are being stored at a cool temperature --- So this may be of help to any of you who have experienced trouble with them

Mine wasn’t that dry, some were solid, some still damp but stiff. I added a couple of drops of glycerine and topped up each carton with water and left it for a week, at which point it was still rather lumpy. Topped up with water again, forgot about it, came back in two weeks and the lumps had pretty much dissolved. Stirred each container briefly with a toothpick and it was ready to use. Glycerine or honey really helps with rewetting -I use it to mix my good gouache so that I can come back and use the palette again more easily, with just a spray.

I've heard, that immediately after you open each little cup, if you put a few drops of honey and clove oil into the paint and mix it in, that they won't dry out. I don’t know if thats true or not. I've not yet tried it. I only just bought the 56 color himi Gouache set this week and not opened it yet. I plan to test out the honey and clove oil though and see if it works.

Love the strawberries! Would I do this? Even though the little frother is so so cute... no! I was thinking that maybe a drop of clove mixed would help with the mold problem like in handmade watercolors. The drying out, separating and mold problem kills this jelly format for me.

I know nothing about this brand. I use Holbein and Schminke out of the tube. To keep them wet when I'm working I wet some palette paper and squeeze what I need onto that. It does the trick for my needs. Maybe try wetting a piece and stick it in the box?? Or maybe the flat sponge of the same brand as the palette paper. I don't know if it will work or not. That may be too messy or introduce mold. I was just thinking out loud.

I wish you did not throw those clumps of paints. They will dissolved you just have to mixed them hard. Once they dissolved then you can use the mixer.. You can actually enjoy that process.
You can also purchase the himi gouache spray to prevent mildew and to moisturized your paints, others use alcohol. I stored mine for almost 1.5 years.. Some have dried up, many paints are still okay but need some moisturizing and stirring. I started with the dried paints i did not do it all in one day. Just whenever I'm free.

    I’ve been lead
to understand that this paint is designed for the Japanese style, gansai. I’m having trouble researching it. I think it’s more like poster paint style, very graphic, and not used like traditional watercolor. I too have seen some RUclipsrs use this paint in thin layers and do pretty well, but I don’t think that’s what it was made for. Anybody know more about this, please let me know. I really want to try it!

Yikes! 12 minutes into this and it’s getting painful to watch 😂. Doing that much chopping and mixing and stirring in the tiny original jelly pan has got to be making this extra hard. I’d have just dumped all the rocks into a stainless steel mortar and pestle, ground it up really fine and then drizzled in water to reconstitute it. I can’t wait to see how your video ends, and I’m kind of hoping that since you recorded this, you’ve dried it all out again so you can test to see if my way is easier, faster and less messy. 🤣🤣
