Richter never ceases astonishing me. His demonic Beethoven, his passionate Schumann, his profound Schubert, his cristaline Bach, and this Debussy. He disappears into the music. There is no piano, nor pianist, only Debussy. Only the music. Very, very few can do that so beautifully.
I give the exuberant compliments. This play leaves me spellbound , and gives me comfort and solace , and heals my tired mind and sorrow , and melts away my suffering and lamentation and anxiety , and purifies my stagnant soul .
I love Richter's interpretation on this. He takes me to his dream world with a beautiful echo behind and cause me to ponder even after the music finished.
In Debussy's interpretation, it is important if not crucial to be aware of the different layers included in the music and to render them ina diffentiated way. This is for instance the case of Pagodes. Richter has perfectly understood that and makes this layer rendering quite perceptible. A GREAT interpretation !
I'm not normally prone to picking a favourite but Richter's performance here is stunning. I love these pieces and I've heard many great performances but he is in a class by himself here. Wonderful, thank you for sharing.
His speed in Pagodes is exactly what I had in mind whenever I explored the piece years ago. I feel that the faster interpretations seem to lose the layered aspect of the piece.
Richter is a legend but Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is one of the top Debussy and French Classical music interpreters, in general, I've ever listened, he is my personal favorite but for Estampes, I love Richter's rendition. Also as someone already said, Gieseking seems so solid, too, even Debussy's wife stated that he is the closest pianist in terms of her husband's playing style.
Jahrhundert!
I've always believed that Richter had an especial affinity and empathy in his performances of Debussy's pieces, which shines through here. From the layered pentatonic scales of Pagodes, to the habanera rhythms of La Soiree dans Grenade, to the playful French nursery rhyme motifs of jardins sous la pluie. Particularly notable are the dynamics and sonorities, which are so artfully executed by Richter here. Richter's interpretation is far and away my favorite for Debussy, especially here for Estampes.
This is one of the best interpretations I have ever heard for the piece of Pagodes. The melodies and the rythms of Gamelan music are beautifully and truthfully materialised with suppressed nuance. A subtle still sharp switch in the procession of the piece is very pleasant, successfully depicting a vivid and static image of an oriental tower. I thank for his profound interpretations and respect for this piece as being originally from the Asian continent.
I love the way Richter play ít.So slow and awesome.I need to search more for this name :Richter.I wish he still alive to play more for me.He´s alive in 2016?????😏
My worldly desires will be faded away by his tremendous performance . And my wandering soul will be healed and purified by his playing melody . 🍎 From effulgent Tokyo in profound Japan in winter Which national are you watching this video ?
The Esrampes evoke the far Eastern bt using charctristic pentatonic scales, Spain by using aldo typical modes an harmonies, and France by using some folkloric material in a very allusive way.
There is something extraordinary in his incomparable performance . Debussy,s beloved daughter , who has a great direct gene , died when she was 14 years old . The genes of the great Debussy,s direct lineage have disappeared from this world forever . It's very sad . If she had lived long , we might have heard of her or her child,s works . It's very sad . This incomparable pianist might have played her or her child,s works . From Tokyo in the dizzying Megalopolis ablaze with neon lights Which national are you watching this video ?
Being the descendant of a great composer doesn't automatically make you a great one; Rachmaninov had 2 daughters, neither one of which I'm aware was a composer. What is more helpful is if another musician of immense talent gets to study with the great composer. Then you get Beethoven building off of Haydn, Liszt building off of Beethoven, Brahms building off of Schumann. Interestingly, some of the great composers who studied with other greats wrote music that is quite a bit different from their predecessors.

He played Debussy rarely in concert because it was too "beautiful" to play more often. He was right. My favorite version is here but Koscis is also wonderful...
Thank god the goat played this piece - easily the best recording of these 3 pieces
