Yea, great to see some Anup in here! To answer the question, yes this is from his solo project, he has some pretty sick albums that he self produced. Along with formerly playing in the bands Monuments, Skyharbor, & Intervals he also does do session work & played on the Devin Townsend album 'Empath' alongside 66Samus & Morgan Ågren (that you've both previously reacted to lol).

@Justin Daniels "nocturne is for the fan girls". You know you can like something without putting others down right? I love tesseract entire catalogue, but the opening beat from nocturne is a very intriguing and fun polyrhythm so I thought its be fun to see garret react. Life isnt about one upping others bud
It's worth mentioning that Anup does all the instruments (AFAIK) but since he doesn't really play anything other than drums at a professional level, he sequences the other instruments a few notes at a time. That's why everything is so quantized. + I fucking LOVE that guitar note where it's just so rough and heavy that you can hear the string rattle against the fretboard, chills
Yes! Thank you to the person that recommended this. I've been trying to get Anup on this channel for a while. He writes all the other instruments in a program. Then records his live drumming to it. Which I love because in most of the industry, it's reversed, and drums are seen as easily replaceable by a machine.
Dude, I thought I knew good drummers (I don't play drums though) but seeing your videos, the viewer suggested drummers, has opened my eyes to all these amazing drummers; and you breaking downs some cool things they're doing, has been fun to watch/listen to
Anup is a great drummer, but I think his greatest accomplishment is writing all of these songs, the melodies, without being fluent on guitar. He writes all this music but can't play it on guitar. He conceptualizes all of this music and records each note one by one. Literally one note at a time. And arranges them in a DAW until he has a song. It's incredible.
Such an amazing drummer and band, hes so on point so good rudimental drumming, polyrhythms, good grooves, have listened to these guys for few years now.
dude i'm not a drummer and i fucking love your channel, i guess that it is the only channel with reactions that i really like. post data: i'm a guitar player
Onya Garrett! I have mad respect for Anup, he’s a dope drummer. Every snare hit is the perfect rim-shot. Props Mr Sastry! Edit: Don’t know how I missed this one, but better late than never.
Gergo Borlai's TamTam festival performance (it's like 56 minutes long but there are two specific song performances, the latter in particular which is in a 9 the entire time) should be really fun! Also have been really enjoying seeing you go over my favorite prog artists of yore!
Absolutely love Anup! Amazing that he's responsible for EVERYTHING you hear! Some seriously awesome composing and programming from him. 2 others of his that seriously slap are "Discovery" and "Crystals" off of the EP before this one :D
He had very nice loving cymbal bashing technical qualities along with great tempo change ups throughout the song as it was a very good well-rounded offering 😀
Hey man, I didn’t know you lived in CA. I live in Sonoma and was evacuated and without power the last week of October. Hang in there. Fires are quite unsettling to say the least!
I feel you with the fires, mate. 850,000+ hectares of NSW, Aus is currently on fire, and some of them are near where my parents live. Stay safe over there!
Anup was also the drummer for the band Intervals, the EP the space between. EP in time. And the word within album. I think that's when him and Aaron split ways. Anup also did some stuff with Northlane I think?
at some points you ask why some of his kicks aren't being picked up; when I first saw it I thought it was some gate issue, but it's actually because the audio of that playthrough is the album version, and not the playthrough itself (as seen on the original video's description). I know I'm a bit (extremely) late to the party, just wanted to clarify that
I was in first row at a gig once and at one part the singer took the China off the drumset (including the stand), went to the front and handed me a stick to play the beat on the china... I somehow managed to flap over the cymbal the other way so he had to pull it back into the original shape over his knee... I used to be a drummer many years ago.
You were saying he's relentless with the cymbals like they owe him money and I had just been thinking that those drum sticks look more like baseball bats...
Check out "Ephel Duath - The passage", it's a "jazz-metal" italian band... well was. You wont find any drum cam video tho, this song is quite old, was played by a Jazz drum teacher in the studio album.
So you've now (unintentionally?) reacted to all 3 drummers on Devin Townsend's latest album Empath! Besides Anup Sastry, he had also had Morgan Ågren and 66Samus (including the song "Hear Me", which you reacted to). You don't need to react to it all, but maybe give the album a listen in your spare time. 66Samus also made a cool "behind the scenes" video when he flew in to record his parts, which you can find on his RUclips channel.
You need to check out Pomegranate Tiger. Specifically the drum playthrough of the song "Cyclic". Martin Andres composes and plays ALL the instruments in the recordings. Great drummer, great guitarist, great programmer. Just a fantastic composer overall.
A drummer you should check out is Sebastian Lanser from Obscura. He is brilliant and technical perfect. I love this guy and Obscura since he plays for them.
First time I saw this guys name I literally thought it was a metal band playing on the name "Anus Pastry," and I mean no disrespect when I say that. His stuff is great, perfect for jamming in the car.
And yeah he was one of the many drummers on the last Devin Townsend album and played in like a million prog metal bands. I really love how he has just no mercy for his cymbals.
React to Epicardiectomy for the meme. Or Defeated Sainty, their drummer is sick, the band started as a father/son band, death metal played by jazz musicians
The Matt Halpern Game had me rolling.
Best "drummer" show I was ever at, had the following drummers:
Alex Rudinger, Anup Sastry, Matt Halpern and Travis Orbin.
Literally a magical eargasm.
Zed Chuva Halpern and Orbin at the same show? Holy shit.
That's not a bad lineup! Best one I had was at Red Rocks with Mario Duplantier, RVP, Axe (Opeth).
Those are some of my favs as well ✌️
What bands?
Hot take.. orbin in sky eats airplane was MAGIC

"Beat the shit out of your China" with a shattered china cymbal would be a good shirt.
agreed. but order decent ones, not those shaped like potatoesacks....
Anup is 1 of the 3 drummers, along with 66Samus, who was on Devin Townsend’s album.
Galactis I seen that video. Pretty neat
love watching Anup he has such a flawless and effortless technique, just a pure joy to watch him play

Yes

ACFINLAND thats the stuff!

His drumming really shines on Kriegsmachine (I personally think anyway). Although, the sound quality is not quite as clear I'd love to see that, too.

Love this dude's style. So on it, interesting and stylish little rests, very tasteful and musical little fills. Defo gonna go check him out.

Saaame
Anup used to drum for Intervals. He's on Intervals' The Voice Within album, one of my fave prog metal records out there.
Big ups for this comment. He was in Monuments and Skyharbor as well.
A Voice Within is such a good album, wish that lineup had stayed as is haha

Anup’s a great dude! Super good engineer too, I tracked drums at his place for my old bands last album and it was an all around great experience.
I think the craziest thing about this video is that he's playing with corpsmasters. Marching sticks on drumset
I use those on a pad haha, wouldn't dare use them on my set. I used to play with 2B sticks but recently I love the Vic Firth Matt Garstka sticks.
I'm not a drummer, don't know anything about sticks. what makes that crazy?
Wincent Thomas haake sticks tho haha

Ooh yes. Most underrated drummer.
It's a shame Steve Judd doesn't have any good play throughs on RUclips.
