Also, I solo backpack, and as a woman I really want to be set up with the best situation/gear/plan as possible for safety. Thanks for showing the X-Mid 1P because that’s what I’d like to get for the weather durability. Keep up the great work, Gentlemen! :)

      I'm guessing there are more late-40s to early-50s people here that are exploring backpacking for the first time. I'm one of them. It's at this age that free time starts opening up for many people. When I was younger, I was into family camping with my wife and kids. Now that I'm older, those days are gone. Kids are gone, the camper is gone, and I suddenly have extra time. Backpacking is something that I'm finally getting into. I'll just be a weekend warrior, but I love being able to beat nature: stay warm, even when it's cold out; stay dry, even when it rains; stay well fed, even when there's no natural sources of food; drink clean water from a dirty stream; and so on.

    The Guide and the Gear-head! You two are an unlikely pair to go backpacking together, but I really enjoy the videos! I'm an older female backpacker who just started going solo, so the journey to branching out and expanding horizons (like Dan does) is very relatable. It's fun that you mix in some gear commentary as well. I too love the Zenbivy Light Bed, though I wish I'd gotten the (25x77") 10degree ( they only had the 25deg when I ordered). It's the most comfortable sleep I've had in the backcountry. Note: I wouldn't recommend a 20x72" sheet, because I'll never go back to narrow sleeping pads!).

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  Год назад +2

      yeah I'm kind of over narrow pads too! It's a tiny bit bulky but I love the extra wide and long sleep system. And thanks! We have fun making videos together!

    I've owned an X-Mid 1 from the first batch, and I've found the easiest setup (IMO) is to keep the inner and outer separated. Set up the outer, then clip in the inner once the outer is all set up. Also keeps the inner a bit cleaner when packing. Also, if it's raining, having just the outer to deal with makes for lightning fast setup. You can stuff the inner down in your pack wherever you want, and keep the outer in an outer pocket (like that of the Granite Gear Blaze 60, which I love) especially if it's dirty. I don't use the stuff sack, to me it's just extra work.
    Sawtooth Lake is one of the most beautiful in all the western US, IMO. Thanks for sharing this!

  • @bertman4
    @bertman4 Год назад +1

    Add four foot guylines to the corners of the X-Mid. It will give you a lot more options for pitching. I've pitched it on rock surfaces where stakes will not go in using rocks and logs as my anchor points .

    Really enjoyed both this and Dan’s videos from this trip, very entertaining. Those lakes are just jaw-dropping! As an avid Colorado 14er peakbagger (22 so far), it was fun to see Dan bag his first peak! I chose to watch this video because I’m thinking to buy an X-Mid 1; I wish you guys would spend a little more time on basic specs for the gear you test (weight, bulk), your opinions on their merits compared to your favorite gear, and your bottom line: are you switching to the new thing, or staying with the old.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  Год назад +1

      Hey Jim, thanks! I put out a video last week called Battle of the Backpackers where Dan and I discuss the X-Mid a lot. It's towards the end of the video. But basically I really like the tent and at $240 for the 1P ($320 for 2P) it's a great value tent. The inner design maximizes space and it seems to hold up exceptionally well in storms (based on reports, I haven't used it in inclement weather). At the moment I'm not switching because Dan didn't actually give it to me! But if I was starting from scratch I would definitely put this at the top of my tents to consider.

  • @gregparrott
    @gregparrott Год назад

    I prefer free standing tents because in many areas of the Sierra, the soil is thin, with a mix of small-loose and large-solid rock limiting secure placement of stakes. Alternatives like rocks, logs, or trees may offer marginal support. Strong winds have lifted the tent, funneling wind inside, which then toppled the poles. No fun when it was also snowing

    I’m still not sure why everyone says that the Durston tents or even Andrew Skurka’s High Route Tent were unique with the offset trekking pole design. TarpTent did this in the Stratospire for years before either of these tents did. The X-mid and High Route are easier to setup because they don’t have the PitchLoc, but the PitchLoc does give more head room.

    Excellent video Eric and Dan.💪 I have a two person A frame trekking pole tent. I made up two four foot shock cords with a loop at each end for the trekking pole ends. When the wind hits it, it bounces back without loosening the stakes. RUclips is screwing up your video by putting a flashing strip advertisement at the bottom of your video. They've been doing that on other channels too. Are you aware of this?

      the shock cords seem like a good idea. Good thinkin'! As for the ads, not sure what's up with that.

      @@BackpackingTV they overlay a strip of a strobe effect ad like video on the right side or bottom screen, very irritating. They seem to do it at random. Could be some kind of subliminal thing. Excellent video 👍

    Interesting video. Thanks for mentioning a tent and the food. What was the point of carrying the hiking poles? Seemed like good terrain to use them on. Also why were you off trail on the way down. I could not tell if you were joking about packing out the pee and leaving the poop. Shouldn’t it be the other way around. Anyway, interesting video.

      I like to use trekking poles, and the terrain here certainly called for it. I also needed the trekking poles for my tent. However I also was carrying a camera and filming so I needed my hands free. As for Leave No Trace, you do not pack out your pee. And here we needed to pack out toilet paper but we could bury poop. Some ecosystems you need to pack out poop and used TP, but that's not the case here. Sorry it was confusing.

    Do you actually sleep in your clothes? In over 50 yrs I don't think I have ever slept with more than a light set of polypro or morino wool long johns and light wt socks. I have been in extreme cold in Antarctica and used a nalgene bottle with hot water in a tent. Not recommended but in a snow mound I was toasty. Temps were south of - 60F. I do enjoy your videos.
