Pokémon FireRed - Catching Mewtwo

- This is me capturing the legendary Genetic Pokémon, Mewtwo, during my Pokémon FireRed walkthrough.
The legendary Pokémon are extremely hard to catch, even if on low health and under a status condition, so bring along as many Ultra Balls as you can, and also have some Great Balls for possible backup. My recommendation is that you DO NOT use your Master Ball on this thing, for there is STILL a Pokémon that is EVEN harder to catch on the loose in the game.
Mewtwo can be VERY annoying, as its stats are through the roof, it knows Safeguard to protect itself from status conditions, Recover to regain lost HP, Psychic to do some really nasty STAB damage, and Swift as an attack that never misses. A good way to start would be to put a non-damaging status ailment on Mewtwo before it can use Safeguard, most preferably paralysis, as it doesn't wear off. After that, start widdling down Mewtwo's health, until you are at the red zone. After this, start throwing Poké Balls at Mewtwo. Ultra Balls are OK, but what I REALLY recommend is that you go to Two Island and buy a bunch of Timer Balls before doing this, since while the battle progresses, Timer Balls become more and more effective and useful every turn, even surpassing Ultra Balls from certain point onwards.
Mewtwo can be found at the bottom floor of the Cerulean Cave, which is located near Cerulean City. Due to the cave containing very high-level Pokémon, a Cooltrainer will stand at the its entrance, preventing you from entering it until you've defeated the Elite Four and the Champion and entered the Hall of Fame at least once.
PS. I know this video contains a lot of re-loads, but I just couldn't bring myself of starting the whole thing over and over again. The last time I tried to catch Mewtwo, I tried to catch it dozens of times, but as it didn't go anywhere, despite of the many close calls, I got frustrated and finally said, "Screw it!" and caught it with my Master Ball. This became even more annoying later on, as I was supposed to catch Suicune without the Master Ball. And boy, I can tell you it was a Hell to go through! I apologize for this, and wish that you understand me.

ATTENTION: Because I'm getting really tired of people bringing this up: I WAS SAVING MY MASTER BALL FOR THE ROAMING LEGENDARY BEAST, WHICH IS WAY TOUGHER TO CATCH WITHOUT IT. THAT'S WHY I DIDN'T USE IT AGAINST MEWTWO HERE. Hope you'll understand.

This is just me but HUGE respect to you for not showing up with an overleveled team against Mewtwo. It made this more enjoyable bc there was challenge in that Mewtwo could one or two shot your Pokémon at any time so you had to be careful and it gave him that strong Legendary factor. Unlike most other videos where it has a level 70 team that uses sleep or paralysis immediately and just chucks balls for the rest of the video
That’s why I like when people use mean look on runners and and baton pass to add to the challenge instead of one shotting with a master ball
I went in there with a lvl 60 Venusaur and everyone else in the low 50's

If I were to write the dialogue of this game, I would have Mewtwo be closer to his movie counterpart and say the following:
Greetings, human. From this cave, I have watched your every exploit, obtaining all eight gym badges, defeating the elite four and surpassing your rival. But now, your endeavors have led you here for the chance to face I, Mewtwo, the most powerful Pokémon ever created. You can try and capture me, but it shall not be as easy as you think. Come!
*Comes with only 5 badges and use master ball to catch it in 5 seconds*
I used my Master Ball to catch the roaming legendary beast Suicune so I didn’t have it when I went to the Cerulean Cave to catch MewTwo I used over 70+ ultra balls but wasn’t able to catch it. Mad respect dude I know how frustrating it is when MewTwo gets out. You earned a sub.

@anonymous "Where is the roamer"? It could be anywhere! Any patch of grass after the National Pokédex could be hiding it! That's why it's called a roamer in the first place!

Bruh you caught I Mewtwo in 5 balls. I used over 20 ultraballs and 30 normal balls to catch Articuno and wasn't able to do it. Ended up using master ball now I am sad about what I did.

I just caught Mewtwo with a level 73 zapdos. use thunderbolt and it should get it below the red and paralyze it as well ideally. i had to restart the game from the save 10 times but it works and i used an ultra ball. toughest capture ever.

I think I know what legends that's harder to catch. It's the 3 legendary dogs I chose squirrel as my starter and I was roaming around and I got raikou

I too caught him legit, I saved my masterball for ho oh because he and Feraligatr are my favorite Pokémon, (yes I got one of those dumb event tickets way back in the day haha)
Why?! I ask why... Why did u use max potions, instead of much cheaper hyper potions? Rly...
I only use Max Potions when I need to heal more than 200 HP but no status conditions (which is why I didn't use a Full Restore. I just wanted to fully heal my Pokémon.
But u healed less than 170 hp, that is why I felt so bad ;/
And full restore is even more expensive, than max

Caught him in LeafGreen first try with an ultra ball. Replaying FireRed, and it's been 30 retries and he still won't get in the damn thing!

You mean Cerulean Cave's theme? In FR/LG, the theme used here is the Rocket Hideout theme.
nah bro i think it's the same theme that plays before you challenge the gym leader, except mewtwo's has more pitch

@@JoaquinWebb It's not the Gym or Gym Leader theme. Cerulean Cave shares its theme with Team Rocket's hideout in these games.

Yeah. If you use them at the right time, they can be even more powerful than Ultra Balls. Don't underestimate the power of Timer Balls.
Well, thanks. I tried some of the things you said (Timer Balls) and it took me only 45 seconds to capture him! While my plan to flood him with Ultra Balls, failed! (In short, i tried throwing timer ball twice, and it did work!)
Where did you get luxury balls?
They can be received at random at Resort Gorgeus for bringing the Lady there a Pokémon she wants to see.
After you rescue a Lady named Selphy from the Lost Cave, she will ask you to bring her a certain Pokémon. If you bring her the Pokémon she wants, you get a random prize.
I tried a few times to weaken it and catch it but failed so I just decided to throw ultra balls at it from the start and I caught it in 10 or so ultra balls!
You ever tried catching Mewtwo with just a normal Poké Ball? You might as well throw a rock instead...

Simply open the saved game file after the credits are over. That simple.

where the hell do you get timer balls
I mention it in the description: as soon as you've cleared the Ruby and Sapphire mission, thus also unlocking Cerulean Cave, you can go to Two Island and by some Timer Balls from a merchant there. He can also sell you stuff that isn't available anywhere else in the game, like Repeat Balls, Lava Cookies, and Moomoo Milk.
What Saphire & Ruby Missions? Please explain to me how you even unlock all those other poke balls as well.
Christian Carlson You'll understand when you play. After defeating the League for the first time, you can go to meet Celio on One Island. After talking to him, got to Mt. Ember, and through a cave that wasn't previously there. There, you will find the Ruby. After taking it to Celio, you can do to the Dotted Hole on Four Island, where you'll find the Sapphire, which is stolen by a Scientist before your eyes, and you'll need to recover it from the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island. If anything was left unclear, Bulbapedia can assist you.

Getting a Pokémon to a that high level in this game isn't easy.
Use a lvl 100 lapras that knows surf, and then just keep using ultra balls until it recovers back all of its hp then you surf again
MewTwo uses Heal

Master all is not for Mewtwo, only if it is Shiny and you don't have more Pokeballs, Masterball is for Shinyes when you don't have more Pokeballs or if he or her can explode or suicide or teleport
I saved my Master Ball for the roaming Legendary Pokémon, not any potential Shiny Pokémon.

I threw around 31 ultra balls to catch it man it took around 40 mins to catch mewtoo its not easy but yeah it's worth the struggle if u had used your master ball on some rubbish Pokemon like me I have used it on zapdos

I was saving it for the roaming Legendary Pokémon. That's a lot harder to catch due to having the same catch rate as any other Legendary but always running away on the first turn, unless you can somehow prevent that, and I quite wasn't up to that, so that's why I saved my Master Ball. Ultra and Timer Balls work here just fine.
I count mewtwo with an ultra ball with half his health (I was lucky as fuck), caught moltres with a regular poke all with 1 hp left (false swipe so fucking useful),caught zapdos with a great ball, caught articuno with a master ball (yes I was dumb bck then also articuno was the first legend i found) the legendary dogs were not as challenging as mewtwo was since I has an gendar with the move mean look. I got all the legends in the Kanto region except for the event legends.... :c

It's OK. In Pokémon X, I caught Mewtwo with Quick Ball on my second try (accidentally KO'd it on the first try).
