As a long time Todd & Utopia fan would fully agree with your rankings, only minor point would have included Another Live as it contains four original Utopia songs such as Another Life, The Seven Rays & Mister triscuits. These are great songs and showcase the band’s evolution but can understand as the remaining songs are covers. Much appreciate your dedication and insight. Thanks a lot
I agree with your opinion that, although it's a live album, Another Live should have been integrated into this ranking since the originals won't be found elsewhere and are classic prog Utopia. But anyway, it's a pleasure to listen to this video since MG knows what he's talking about.
Thanks for listening! I was torn on including that album or not but I’ve always considered Studio Albums, Live Albums, EP’s and Compilations separate things so I’ve always had a hard time combining them in these videos I do but because of the 4 originals I definitely can understand where you’re coming from
I would rate every Utopia albul as an S ...>EXCEPT for Deface the Music .... Hio Paloi is a really good track but other than that its not listenable to me I can literally BINGE on any other UTOPIA album for days at a time ..... especially UTOPIA 2 album which I am known by my piers to sing out loud with absolutely no shame ...
My ranking is practically an upside-down version of this. Can't stand the progressive stuff (Utopia, RA), while Oblivion is probably my favorite Utopia album (the Network Utopia and POV albums are a close second).
Love your in depth analysis of the albums and the songs. My disagreements with your rankings would be ... I would put Disco Jets into the B category, Swap Deface with Oops, drop Swing to a C. Oblivion and P.O.V. go to A for me. Well done!
I really enjoyed your Utopia album analysis! I am a big Utopia fan. This is my album grades: 1. S - Adventures in Utopia (One of the greatest albums in history, and Caravan is my favorite Utopia song) 2. S - Utopia (The Ikon is arguably the greatest art rock song in history) 3. A - Ra 4. A - Swing to the Right (I love the feel of this album with the Droste Effect used on the cover, it is like a Hipgnosis album cover) 5. A - Oops Wrong Planet (Love is the Answer is one of the greatest ever) 6. A - Utopia (Feet Don't Fail Me Now is one of my favorites. For some reason Roger Powell singing songs are incredible!) 7. B - POV (Terrific last album. Makes me sad though being the last. Maybe a miracle new album will happen) 8. B - Oblivion (I am a big fan of Cry Baby and the Mtv video) 9. B - Disco Jets (I liked the first song on it, it could have been used as the Sonic Hedgehog theme music throughout the video game) 10 - C - Deface the Music (I did not like the direction they took here, Beatles copy)
The ranking almost seems like " earliest best , later , worse " but I think without exception every Todd product has at least a few " worth the price of admission " songs. So this is most for your money ?
TR's Utopia : S. Wow... An A for Disco Jets ! I personally don't dislike it and really like a couple of tunes. Listened to it again to remember it and Disco Jets, the tune, is actually both very good and easy to listen to. Rising sign, very good too. Cosmic Convoy, good and easy too. As a whole, very synth oriented and easy to listen to. As a side project, it's fun. Would be a B for me. Recorded in two days if my memory serves me correctly... Ra : A. Electrified Fairy tale is very good to introduce children to prog music. Oops : B for me. Windows is great indeed. Adventures : A for me. Very good. Deface, Swing and Utopia : some songs are A, others are B. Oblivion : S. Favorite power pop album ever. POV : almost an S. Only A because of Mystified and Zen Machine.
@@MikeGodetteMusic Since you said you don't like the production, which I personally am very fond of, there's little hope... What I don't get is that the production doesn't bother you on the three wonderful slow cuts although it's basically the same sounds as the remaining tunes.
@@MikeGodetteMusic Took me awhile to get into it... and then I rather liked it considering when it was released. I often feel my early negative reaction to it was due, in part, to the bland record sleeve which was all black except for the word 'OBLIVION' embedded ( or was it raised?) on the jacket without discernment. I didn't even notice it for quite some time!
You missed an album Todd Rundgren’s Utopia - Another Live 1975 yes, it’s a live album, but it’s a live album of new material just like the first one it does have a couple of covers is but still considered a Utopian release discography it is not a typical live album release
I believe ranking a band that has 2 distinctive sounds. My friends loved the prog Era, which I've never had the attention span to dig into that space. I entered at the self-titled album and I'm decidedly more of a power pop music fan. Therefore, the 'utopia and 'oblivion ' records were highly influential to me as a listener. 😮😮

Love your in depth critique. Found myself nodding in the affirmative throughout.
Bravo

Very cool! Love the diversity of thought in the Utopia community. Definitely gonna give Oblivion a few more tries. Thanks for listening!
