Jared: “I’m pretty much a mechanic”
The surface of the Sun: “I’m pretty much warm”
My favorite comment in a while! Thank you
When you go to remake the door PANELS, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get you some clear plastic, and make your patterns off the doors themselves. You'll be able to mark exact hole locations for the retaining clips and screw holes, and you don't have to fight the shrunken and warped cardboard of the original panel, and you can also use the plastic as the vapor barrier between the door and the door panel.
Forgot to add that the clear plastic I'm referring to is over with the rolls of carpet, it's usually used as a protective runner.
the thick painters plastic works pretty well for that too, comes in HUGE rolls if you need extra somewhere in the shop!
@@JrJohnston70Thanks I had to replace the window regulator on my truck and the plastic sound deadener fell apart and now I can replace it.
@@ghomerhust that stuff works pretty good as well, the stuff I'm referring to is like what is used for the windows on Jeep soft tops and convertible tops.
This or a large piece of cardboard/foam! Well the part for keeping track of hardware and where they belong.
“I’m a mechanic, not a body guy.”
Same.
However, that didn’t stop my old boss from appointing me to replace all the rotted out metal in the shop’s 1976 Chevy K20 snowplow/tow truck during the pandemic quarantine when customer work was almost nonexistent.
Now this is Wisconsin rust, it gets in DEEP and I ended up cutting out both rocker panels, the bottom halves of the front fenders, the bottom halves of the doors, bottom halves of the door skins, 80% of the cab floor, 2 of the cab mounts, and completely replaced the hood (Squarebody hoods tend to rust in the crumple zone and the hood bends in half when you try to close it).
After watching a LOT of youtube vids, trimming and dry fitting the replacement steel, and buying some decent tools, the results.....didn’t suck as bad as I feared! My boss did the bondo, sanding, and painting afterwards and it looked halfway decent.
Jared: I'm a mechanic I am not a body person
Also Jared: made the most amazing ute in the USA
And he also did an amazing job repairing it after it got "hit while parked"! Lol. (Sorry Jared, I couldn't stop myself!)
@surfer5352 ok sorry I meant made it twice lol
Once again, Jared the optimist, filling my confidence to go back into the garage and finish some projects.
You can do it!
‘You only learn by doing’. Wise, wise words. Great episode. Needs for dog.
Soundtrack C no doubt about it.
Agreed. I just can't stand all the sampled crap, especially the ones with little voices in the bg.
I've actually quit watching some of my favorite subbed channels, for no other reason other than their annoying bg "music".
Soundtrack B won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a vibe. If I'm being honest, C probably suits the channel/content best.
agree. C is it i think.
I came here to say the same thing!
b had a great bass line 👍
It's really cool when you do something like this on a car when you have never done it before and you surprise yourself that you actually did it AND it turned out better than you expected. Congrats Jared.
Jared just keeps dropping bangers! I don’t think there’s a single series he has going now that I’m not totally invested in! Keep up the phenomenal work Jared!
👍
Track C, Dwayne. Jared, this was a great educational vid since I'll have to tackle door rust on the 1972 D100 someday if I get that far along with it.
It's not only the thickness of the steel that matters. It's the carbon content of the steel and its propensity to rust.
With all the body work you have scheduled for this car you may become an "auto-body man" before this series is complete. A good start on a long process. Thanks for the video.
I recently just started doing body work about 2 months ago. It's been fun to learn, but it takes patience and persistence. It's mostly been messing it up till I get it right. We mostly do semis, box trucks, and pickups with utility boxes.
I think music track C better suited to Jared"s style.
Also, it's the only actual MUSIC.
The pure joy on your face is brilliant, you never win if you don't try. You tried and by the looks won too.
Jared I have to tell you. One of the coolest and sickest hot rods I've ever seen what's a 69 GTX in teal green. It actually had a black interior it was one of the most amazing hot rods I've ever seen. I'm 62 years old and I saw that car in the late seventies
I also saw one of those back in the day. It was doing some street racing and then a rear wheel bearing went out.
Dwayne your veiwer side quest participation, while Jared time-lapses gets my vote. I enjoy the occasional (foreshadowing, comment, or 2 cents) narration that creeps in to a video. Jared I'm looking forward to this project, I'll be doing a frame off rebuild of my 95 extended cab hopefully this year. New cab, interior swap, wiring, all of it. Just because I have a rust free cab I was given for the job.
Mountain Muscle Cars in Cosby, TN had a lot of hard-to-find Mopar parts for a charger I restored a few years back. I specifically remember buying the quarter window rollers for the Charger from them. I'm not sure if they are the same, but it's worth a shot.
16:39 honestly, i would've done both doors. And the reason is pretty simple. Once you acid prime the raw metal, you can put a good paint layer, something that's elastic and long lasting, then mask the contact areas and paint bed liner on the door shell. Which is both going to protect and negate sound without being (itself) a potential rust area later on. Jm2c
We can really tell how much you love this car Mr. Pink. It's going to be awesome!
Duane! Awesome job. Though I would not want to listen to C without time lapse I find that I gravetate to C.
Jared! This is soooooo cool!
Love that you couldnt hide how happy and chuffed with yourself you were :)
About the music, I preferred the one during the time lapse after the three options. It kind of sounded like something Moog of Mighty Car Mods would do.
Great work Jared and editor Duane! I like all the music on the channel but if i had to pick it would be track c. Great motivational message at the end, thanks!
Ooooh Duane... Track c is very fun... Also Jared "and we are done ....not really" hahaha
Hey Duane! Track A #1, Track C a close #2. Jared- great video!
Good job! Bring it to the shop and we will put some Runs, Drips and Bubbles on it!
Unlike the dusters this one needs to look pretty!
Soundtracks -
A. sit back and smoke/drink one
B. video game background music
C. git r dunn
Super proud of you! Just trying something new is intimidating but it’s amazing how much better you feel with a mild success under your belt
Green on white is fantastic. very like, much class
You're such a good guy Jered. I recommend My Friend Pete for a good tutorial on how to do quarter panels. I'm so glad you're here, best of luck
Great job Jared! I love your channel and how you will tackle just about anything.
Love your video but man we NEED the VGG super van to come back! You're awesome man.
In regards to folding over the metal for the door skin, I could see a pair of HVAC sheet metal hand brakes and some foam tape for protection coming in real handy...lol, coming from an HVAC tech. Great video Jared, thanks for sharing. Glad to see the old Mopar getting some well deserved love.
31:20 you have the door on the stand wrong. Close the stand up and put door on it length wise. Prevents dents from stand
In a fantasy world f I was putting a hot motor in a 60s mustle car and could have two helpers I would pick you and Merlin to help it work right. Go questionable garage.❤️
Good first skin Jared, you always start at the corners to stop the skin moving front to back and up and down on the shell because that scratches the paint off, a heel dolly is best to put on the outside of the skin whilst hammering to transfer all the impact back into the skin to keep it flat. If you can get aluminum composite sheet it makes great door card backing and it's not bothered by weather.
If you’re doing a lot of that invest in an air hammer. I used them in the sheet metal industry for turning 1/4” edges on (Pittsburgh) fittings. Made life a lot easier.
Right now I’m redoing the floor panels and cross member mounts on my 02 Silverado 1500HD. After the bed is repaired or maybe during I’m doing the inner & outer rockers with the cab corners. Videos like this definitely gives you the courage to do it yourself if you have the equipment.
Wish I could get new skins for my 73 amc hornet, but look into a product called lizard skin. You can do a strip like factory and its much better then what factory used. Great for hot trans tunnels and firewalls 👌
I am a body guy so I don't know why I sat here and watched you do what I do all day, but it happened. One tip: turn the door 90 degrees on the X stand. Those bars going across the door skin while you are hammering can put 2 shallow dents in it.
Track B was my favorite. Can’t wait to see the car done!!
Don't think I've ever watched a door skin being replaced! Great video. Can't wait for the rest of the body work. Like the track that was played during the inner door skim rust converting!
I got a 55 gallon barrel and filled it up with a mixture of 10-1 water and molasses, you could soak that entire door frame overnight and it would take off all that rust, I’ve seen rusty engine blocks come out brand new looking
I liked the music that started at 26:10. Thnx, Duane, for all you add to every episode.
With the dents at the front, try heating the panel up, then cooling it quickly with a upside down aerosol can. It got some dents out on a old car of mine. Used the goue dent pullers for stuff with creases.
I'm legit so excited for this build Jared, and your approach and intent for it is rock solid. I'm watching along with great anticipation! Love the work that you do mate! Keep it up!
That is amazing! You should be proud of what You did. I would look up Robby Layton. He has some good vids on fixing dents. He owns a body shop and does youtube.
I watched the original Gone in 60 seconds movie this morning and It was so depressing seeing all the 68, and 69 satellite cop cars that were destroyed! Even 70 coronet cop cars too! Plus all the challengers and third gen chargers! So sad but for those of us who grew up in the late 70s and early 80s knows that you could buy them cheap. I've even had people give cool cars to me just to haul them off. How times has changed 😕
Learn by doing, and by your mistakes. The best way to adopt new skills Mr Pink. Excellent job there, more care than when the ole beast was made originally I'd bet. Look forward to more on this restoration.
Yes, thanks
Nice motivational tutorial
the only way to learn is from making mistakes and then you take that learning experience and try to improve. i am going to try and do some body work this summer on a 3 gen f body. watching this is going to help out on how to be patient and do things slowly and learn. thank you
Always enjoy your videos and how to . Love those beautiful dogs.
Cheers happy Friday
You are so kind
That's it! Day 1 of asking for an update on the TDI swapped Honda limo!
same
It’s going to drop with a big update all in one, Rousey is coming in and out getting progress slowly. Has most of the front suspension now!
@@TheQuestionableGarage that's very exciting. you cant tell by my expression but i am genuinely excited.
Track C, definatly more rock then anything.
Thank you Jared for this video, love to see more of bodywork then engine who about every one else always seem to get stuck in.
Regards from Sweden.
This is a GREAT build. Looking forward to every episode ✌️
Thanks a bunch!
You should get a hold of some of those rust n paint strip discs. They work much better than the wire wheel or flap disc. Plus painting over anything orange or brown rust looking isn't removing the rust but just covering it over. It'll continue to rust under pretty much anything including rust converters. Ask me how I know? 😉
New door skin was certainly the right thing to do to that door mate 👍
Outstanding and awesome as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
For a "Toyota Guy" you never cease to impress on your willingness to expand your knowledge of any and all vehicles. Thanks for yet another great video Jered. You are fantastic to watch.
My lottery would be you and Derek stealing my K20 to finish it for me.. lol
I’ve always been wanted to see this done. And now I have well done.
Excited to see this come together!
My favorite color dodge ever put out, Plum Crazy Purple.
"The door is ajar" joke made me hit the like button.
This car should be off-white, 70's AF
That was just terrific Jared!
Another fantastic episode! I especially appreciate your approach to learning new skills, your kindness and wisdom, and the Dad jokes. This is my favorite RUclips channel, please keep up the phenomenal work!
Wow, thank you!
There is nothing like diving head first into new territory, on one bike project alone i frenched tailights, modified the crap out of a gas tank, and made a headlight nacelle from scratch out of fiberglass. All firsts for me. Super satisfying
As a nod to Ricardo Montelban, you ought to upholster the interior in rich Corinthian leather. I don't recall the exact number of rich Corinthians each vehicle required, but you won't even have to go to Greece; there should be enough rich folks in Corinth, Mississippi to do one car!
Hi Jared,if you want to see a guy who I think is very good on body work. May be I can suggesting ,you V TUNED GARAGE youtube channel.I think you can learn from this guy and see the different tools he used to fixed the wreck vehicule.keep the good work from an old 1968 dodge super bee owner.
I would love to have a Satelite overa Charger . Besides it seems like everybody wants a Charger.
Duane! Love the Afroceltesc music during door skin hammering.
I liked track A the best. But I didn't dislike any of them so you're golden either way.
Jared is one hell of a mechanic. I don't really like doing stuff I'm not good at which means I never get good at stuff that's not in my wheel house. Being a perfectionist also isn't helping... It's a shame and I'm working on it.
But watching Jared tackle all these things really puts into perspective what people are able to achieve if you aim for "good enough" or slightly above. You might end up somewhere far beyond your initial goals.
Sadly, we don't get that many muscle cars in Germany. They look rather out of place here which makes them very cool but also a magnet for all kinds of pleasent and less pleasent folks.
Hi Jared nice video 📹 and workmanship those door 🚪 skin looks sweet!!!
This car is gonna be sweet! I am all about building your dreams so I am excited to watch you build yours.
Well done, sir! "It's mostly right" should b a T-shirt or something. I will follow that principle once I'll get my summer car project started 😄
The first track you played is what I like
Mr Questional , a lot of the trouble you had , was how you positioned the door on the panel stand , if you had of rotated the door 90 degrees , the door would not have jump around like a jumping bean , you probaly know that now regards Rob.
Surprisingly enough green was used a lot on the interiors and on the exterior colors as well. I have seen a lot of green mopars that have been repainted a different color too!
track B full service is the best IMO
Great content!!! I'm liking the project.
I’ve always called the welds for door skins spot welds if it’s OEM or plug welds if it’s a reskin.
Panther Pink exterior, unusual but offered at the time and it pays homage to your last name.
Interior black with matching panther Pink trim piping
Great job, Well done
I don't drive, but I enjoy watching your Car (repair) Videos.
Yup my hobby is taking cars apart, my greatest ambition is gettting them back together.
That came out awesome nice work !! Also you’re a KickAss mechanic!! 👨🔧
satisfaction is knowing you tried and are happy with the outcome.
You might want to think about power coating the bumpers to match your paint. I think that would be a very good look. Just something to think about.
Well done Jared! (As always!)
Jared keep the green. Its like the old ram trucks with red interior. Its odd but satisfying
I’m ADHD so I’m used to doing things I have no idea what I’m doing but with that I have mastered many different trades nice job and your correct just get out there and do it remember even a pro had a first time
It may not be a "perfect restoration", but your attention to detail makes all the difference. Also all the different music tracks sound good to me!
29:11 Ive always called that plug welding
I think plum crazy purple would be a great color on it
Jij bent goed bezig Jared. Respect!
B at double speed seems like some decent bedroom DnB - C at double speed not bad either
"it's mostly right" Teeshirt available now!
My Color Suggestion: Satin Black body, with all the chrome/brightwork etc. in Gloss Black.
Thank you 😁😁👍👍
