There's one really simple, quick change you can make that will instantly improve newborn sleep by getting them to take longer naps. Most parents don't even realize that often they are inadvertently causing their newborn to wake sooner than they need to. In this video you'll learn what this change is and how you can implement it right away for better newborn sleep.
The key to understanding why this works is understanding how newborn sleep is different from our sleep as adults. A baby's brain is developing at a rapid pace, and as a result their sleep behaviors and patterns are still developing and changing as well.
In the video you'll learn why this aspect of newborn sleep is so important, and how to accommodate for that next time your baby takes a nap.
If you're struggling with your newborn baby waking frequently and taking short naps, this video might be exactly what you need!

I baby is 1 year + but he wake up as I lay him down bed but he sleeps on hand what to do ?
Hi I would like to thank you because your video helped me a lot with my baby She was diagnosed as C.P at the age of 4 months and lost all her physical development.I put her to a P.T 2 a week I watch your video so I can help her to recover now she is 2years old and she can walk without support thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️
These videos are so well made and so useful. Thank you very much Emma, and best wishes from a nervous but optimistic new father in Romania!
Definitely made that mistake with my daughter as a FTM and payed the price later. Started doing this with my son since he was born and it's made a world of difference! Yes it could also be related to their individual differences but I know my behaviors were encouraging certain sleep patterns.
I think it is something we all naturally fall into doing as first time parents. It's so good you were able to make some really simple changes the second time round and notice changes straight away.
Can you please do a video on creating a good routine for a 4 to 6 month old. Really love your content I'm a first time mum and your videos are really helping
Great idea!
Yes please. I would love that too!
Yes, please!! I have a premie baby and I have been trying for weeks to get him on a schedule. Do not know how to start.. :(
Yess pls!! My baby is 5 Months old and takes such short naps :(
🙏🙏🙏
Fortunately, we realize this with our son quite early. He would full on cry in his sleep, but we would watch on the monitor until his eyes were open for more than just a few seconds. The number of times we almost went into the room thinking he was awake some mornings was ridiculous. Kid was an expert at gaslighting at just 3 weeks!
😂
Great video, thanks! How long does it usually take them to link sleep cycles? My little guy (4 months old) will sometimes squirm in his crib and it is hard to tell if he's up or still going to sleep for longer.
Amazing tip, thank you!
So helpful thank you!!! I had no idea about this last week and kept waking the baby in this stage! How are we not taught this at the hospital when we give birth! It’s so important 🤯 Loving all your content 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 THANK YOU
they gave me papers (walls of text really) where it was explained among other things. I wasn't able to sleep for 36hours with the excitement of labor starting (but for two short naps) so I didn't have the mental energy to read that 😅 such videos are SO helpful!
Hi Emma, this has immensely helped me when my baby was a newly born. He is now seven months. I learned this through your previous videos, thank you so much for making our lives easier 🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing!!
So useful!
ftm here, i am so grateful for all of your content! you have taught me so much. my mother is also enjoying your videos, she had 5 children and is still learning a lot from you.
That is awesome!
Great information. It took me 2 months to figure this out. Now, my little one is 3 months old.
Glad it was helpful!
Ooooh! Thank you.
WOW, thanks!!
Been watching you since my daughter was born almost 2 years ago. Planning to have another baby next month so watching the newborn videos to learn again 💕
Congratulations on pregnancy number 2! Hopefully you are not feeling too exhausted. Hopefully this video will help when your little one arrives!
Bst of luck dear ,,👍👍
Gods bless you in your journey!
Hello! I really like your videos. They're very informative and well made.
Just wanted to ask, at what point do they get pass all that movement and noise making during the rem sleep process?
omg thankyou so much . I'm a new mom my baby is 6 weeks. and I jus learned alot from this video . last night he was moving . but I didn't want to grab him so I sat there and watched him n he fell right back to sleep. I knew I did the right thing thanks for these videos
You are so welcome! That is awesome you saw it in action last night. Hopefully that means more sleep for you all!
Great new format and feel in this video! Much easier to watch. Thank you Emma!!

My 8 weeks daughter and I say THANK YOU🥰❤️
It's my pleasure! Hope you notice some changes soon!
@Antyweszka also just a heads up your little one would be experiencing the peak of the period of purple crying (AKA the witching hour) so this video might also be helpful: ruclips.net/video/EQs2JIHK45A/видео.html
Your my daily inspiration ☺️
Wow, thank you!
so if you have fallen into a bad pattern, what then? would love to hear more on rectifying it
*Easy to setup and maintain.*

Thanks for subbing!
useful informations
Thank you Liem!
I wish I had this info was my daughter was a newborn! My daughter is now a toddler I Wanted to ask you EMMA can you think about doing a video on toddler feeding portion sizes etc.?! I’m struggling! Your videos help me So much!💜🙏
Hi @Dana it can be really hard to know how much to give a toddler. Generally the recommendation is 5 meals a day (which are spaced around 2 1/2 hours apart) and it's also good to remember that their stomach is only the size of their fist so they really don't need a lot. Also it's important to remember that your role is to decide when your little one will eat and what they will eat but it's your daughter's role to choose how much of the food she will eat. HOpe that helps a little bit!
@@EmmaHubbard thank you so much!!!!!! I will keep all of this in mind!!
@@Dana-mb1hd no worries at all
I love your sessions. Y do new Borns plee off their skin
I have an 11 week old and he is doing well at night. I am having trouble with naps during the day. He's awake and happy and then gets hungry so he feeds ans becomes sleepy. He falls asleep while breast feeding so I lay him on my chest (upright, head by mine) to help his food go down/burp. When I try to lay him in his basinet, he wakes up as soon as I lay him. He tends to seem okay and not tired, but if I hadn't laid him down he would've slept for an hour. I have tried laying him anywhere from 5-20 minutes after feeding and it's usually the same. When I loosely wrap him with a blanket in my arms before laying him he tends to sleep a few more minutes in the basinet before waking.
Should I be feeding him in the room with dim lighting and white noise during the day? Should I transport him to the room after feeding? Should I not let him sleep after eating? He's a good baby but I just want to make sure he's sleeping enough even though he doesn't cry. Maybe this is why he sleeps well at night?
Any tips are welcome! :)
How about twins? I'm expecting twins this December. Can this apply? I'm worried that they will wake each other when they're grunting and making noise as I'll have them in a side by side bassinet.
Hey I love your videos. Thank you so so much for all your advice. My baby is 14 weeks old and cries out really loud after 20-30mins after going down in cot with white noise and blinds closed (dark room). I will go in after 5 minutes and her eyes are sometimes closed and startles with her arms put to side but still crying loud. I try shhh for 1-2 minutes and then leave room and do this twice but if she still cries after second time doing that, I pick her up, resettle in arms and put her down again but it usually ends with her finishing off her sleep in my arms….any suggestions please. This only happens during the day and is a good night sleeper. :/
Are you using a swaddle? It is also a good idea to not keep the room dark during daytime naps.
Thank you for a great video. My question is the Pause rule is applicable from 2 months for example?
Yes, this is specifically about newborns!
Yep the pausing is applicable to 2 month olds. Really it should just become a habit which you continue. It's just not something new parents are aware of because we don't expect babies to be noisy sleepers and move around/open their eyes while they sleep.
Thank you for the video.
Do I need to disturb their nap for feeding if it takes 3 hours and longer?
I do wake them when they’re new born . That’s my personal preference. I wake every 3 hours but don’t panic if you go over the first couple of days is exhausting for you & baby . If any baby is experiencing jaundice then definitely be feeding every couple of hours xx
Hi Emma. Up to which age does this apply? Thank you.
The video says newborn, so probably 0-3 months?
Please You Shears Baby Mother Health Tips
I think we’ve been doing this with our 5 week old. Is it too late or is he forever going to awake at any sound?
Oh my,wish this video was made a s seen when my LO was a newborn 😂
Hi Emma! I am really struggling to lengthen my 9 week olds naps. I will make sure she’s full and has a clean diaper, but sometimes when I put her down, she will nap for 20 minutes and wake up crying. She is then very hard to settle back into sleep. This creates a vicious cycle as she is tired and fussy and even less likely to nap well! Any tips would be appreciated! (Nighttime sleep is pretty good so I’m not sure why the naps are such a struggle!)
I have a simular problem with my 7 month old.
Same with my 10 week old
same with my 7 week old and this is the case since about 2-3 weeks already so i think i fell into this trap of jumping in too quickly and disturbed her sleep cycle so now she actually wakes up
Mine is a noisy sleeper so I’ve learned not to go in right away, but she ends up crying and is awake. I read an article that the mother’s melatonin in the baby wears off around 8 weeks so some babies experience huge nap disruptions around this time as they start producing their own. Not sure if that’s what’s going on with my daughter but it’s been hard!
Hey, this is my personal experience in that stage of life, up until about 4 months.
I'd often nurse to sleep, and if he was sleeping, I'd just lay him down, no burping. As you probably know, babies (especially smaller babies) usually go potty relatively soon after feeding (5-20 minutes). I personally felt that this was often the root of his arousal - either he'd need to pee, or has just peed*, or needed to be burped.
Extra (not quite solutions, but attempts, or things to consider, research for yourself):
Burping:
- Even though SIDS guidelines don't recommend it, in my country the norm is to put babies to sleep on their side or tummy (tummy was the only norm still about 10 years ago) to prevent flathead (and as they get older, prefer their left side due to anatomy of stomach, to prevent reflux). This, especially tummy (they literally burp sleeping), but also side position, may help release gasses. (I didn't put my baby on his tummy, but I plan do so with my next one, I now think SIDS fear (by which I was crippled as a ftm) is overrated, and common sense plus some basic knowledge applied to your personal situation is more important than strict rules - like don't let your baby sleep on too soft surfaces such as your mattress on their tummy).
- I would sometimes rather risk waking him up and burping him than just laying him down unburped. As a newborn I'd just hold him upright on my chest and when he was a bit bigger I'd have him across my shoulder. No huge patting on the back (sometimes more of some squishy hugging, or massage/petting from bottom to top, rarely some patting on the bum), mostly just rocking till sleep and sometimes he'd burp, sometimes not, but if he fell asleep that way, usually I had pretty good success of him not rewaking. Sometimes he'd decide he needed to pee during this process and sometimes this would completely wake him up, but sometimes we managed to do it all in a semi drowsy state and then he'd be rocked to sleep succesfully :)
- our easiest burping cues was head shaking left to right, some back arching (but this later was used even if he just wanted to be laid down and left alone - bless those easy putting to sleeps :D, and if he'd grunt while arching his back, he'd want to pee)
Pottying:
- I strongly advise to look up Elimination Communication - even if you won't try actually catching any pees, but come on, the transition "catches" are hassle-free and worth the shot. Andrea Olson has a good amount of free content here on RUclips about lots of info on pottying, and it's VERY useful to be in tune with their cues, even if you just let them loo in their diapers (I cannot understand how trying to be in tune with children in this aspect isn't an absolute norm and must-have). Once you, however, are in tune, you'll likely find that it's more environmentally friendly to try catching some of the bathroom breaks into the potty/toilet/sink/ whatever you choose. And if you use cloth, well, you save yourself some work :)
PS: first year of life an average baby will use up 3000 diapers that end up in landfills...
- potty cues are more subtle, especially for an almost sleeping baby, so I have no advice, however if he protests burping, often he wants the potty cause the arching of back was similar but he'd squirm more.
- sometimes he'd fall asleep clearly needing to pee (but try this yourself, it's not pleasant) and then a small startle in REM would remind him of this need and there we go
- doing this business slooowly, quietly and in the dark with as little stimuli as possible helped with the success of getting him back to sleep
Lastly, I'd like to mention, I still had a good deal of issues with sleep, but this helped diminish the 20 minute catnaps :)
* Dear parents, Crying before urinating is normal. As the urinary bladder get filled, stretching causes pain, the baby start Crying, this Crying causes pressure & baby passes the urine. At this time baby stop Crying & again start Crying as he get wet. (copy pasted)
This REM stage of sleep remains for how many months??
We quickly (yes, before "guidelines") switched to a floor bed (because bending to slowly and precisely lay a sleeping baby down in a crib for a short person weak after birth was a no go, and he'd end up sleeping in our bed and on the couch anyways) in the room right next to our bedroom.
Allowing him sleep peacefully in a different room has helped tremendously both of our sleeps. I'd wake up when baby got between his sleep cycles and my arousal would wake him up. Now if I jerk awake, I wait for a couple of minutes (or more like half an hour hahhah) and if he's calm and quiet, I assume he's sleeping and return to sleep.
It's great that you were able to notice your arousal was waking him up and naturally started pausing to make sure he was truely awake.
What do you do if baby is not crying but making a lot of noises and not going to sleep? This happens a lot for naps
Pls do they grow out of it? My boy is 18months and still makes grunting noise whiles sleeping. Should I be worried?
Hi emma,
My baby 13 week old crying before every nap at daytime. Started to cry when feel sleepy and end up screaming and nap for 30 min .can you help me
my 19 months old baby is still a trouble whole night . we are on verge, I regret doing a baby .. can you please help.. can you consult us.. please please.. I follow you since long .
How long should you pause for?
👍
Hi Emma my baby he one month now don’t like to sleep with back he sleep with Tammy wht should i do
Can you make some video for brest milk supply
Hi Chandni I would love to help butt his is a little outside of my scope.
Hello and thank you for all your advice. Does this concern babies 6-12 months old?
Pausing is a very helpful strategy for 6 - 12 month olds as well. At this age they do briefly wake between sleep cycles and if they are not disturbed they may go back to sleep. At this age it is also generally easier to identify if a baby needs comfort as their noises are different to resettling to sleep.
Thank you very much !
I wish! His crying always escalates. Naps are always less than 40 min unless you’re holding him
Hi @mikel1425, I am not sure how old your little one is but I do have a baby sleep course for 0 - 6 month olds which would give you the strategies to help your little one nap in a crib/separate sleep space. Here is the link to the course in case you're interested: brightestbeginning.com/courses/peacefuldreams/
What is correct age to stop using the white noise during baby's sleeps?
It really is up to you. I still use a white noise machine with my 3 year old (as he now sleeps with his door open). It is helpful to block out those early morning noises (like birds, trucks or general building noises) and stop your little one waking too early. If you do want to stop using it just gradually reduce the volume of the white noise machine over 1-2 weeks and eventually it will be so soft that you can turn it off. Hope that helps!
@@EmmaHubbard Hi, thanks for your replay.
You've just helped me with one of my biggest concern.
We live literary next to the school yard. And kids sometimes even knock into our window during my baby's nap. So white noise is my best friend. Now I'm happy that I've got professional permission to keep it as long as I need)))))
I still use a white noise machine for my 8 and 9 year olds, they ask me for it! And I like sleeping with it too =)
I wish I had seen this video 4 months ago!!!
It is still a good strategy to use with your 4 month old. Just pause before you enter the room and see if your little one goes back to sleep and make sure they are truely awake.
My baby (3 month) is waking up every night at 3.00 O'clock in the morning. Making loud noises and shaking his head to the left and to the right. It takes 2 hours to stop him..is this a normal behaviour?
My 5month old baby wakes up by rolling on his tommy and starts crying🥲and I need to feed him to settle him down. Will this situation change?
It depends! If you little one starts rolling onto his tummy and prefers to be in this position for sleep then he will just start to go back to sleep. But if your little one needs your help to fall asleep every time (so for all naps) and he finds it uncomfortable lying on his tummy for sleep and can't roll back over then he will continue to call out and need your help to settle back down. The good news is that generally between 5 - 6 months babies can start to link sleep cycles and so he may start extending his day time naps.
Are you wrapping the baby when put him to sleep very hard for them to move
My newborn becomes fully awake regardless, so how do I get him to have a full nap anyways???
If the newborn continues to wake and fall back asleep for longer than 3 hours, should they then be woken up?
Now my baby is 43 days before he used to sleep all day but night crying too much until 4-5 am after he sleep again but since 2-3 days he is not sleeping day time nor night if he sleep but he wakeup after Every 5-10 min I don't knw why plz can u tel me why this Happens?
What entering baby's room mean? Do people put their newborn in a separate room?
we already fell into the trap of fully waking up because i was jumping in her light sleep. how can we reverse this?
Just start trying to wait for a few minutes and see what happens. You will soon work out when your little one needs your comfort and when they are just resettling back to sleep.
Even after eating in tend to cry , what can I do
Hi,my baby is 9months old now but still she is not crawling and sitting.am very trying to encourage her but she didnt.we are so much of worry about my baby.plz what can i do
Plz give me rly
Make her sit or crawl to her food?
My baby, 2.5 months old, is sleeping (REM sleep) while i am watching this video 😅
Gas is the reason my newborn can't sleep in peace
Well, this doesn’t help me lol. I wasn’t aware of the active sleep thing but I give it a minute or two before I truly check to see if the baby is awake. My child goes through these cycles every few days where she only sleeps for 10 minutes to half an hour. Shes 3 months old. It’s exhausting
My 3 months old daughter hasn't sleep for 12 hours .I'm very worried about her
This just happened to me she even kicked off her blanket but her eyes were still close so i just put her blanket back on and walked away slowly lol
😂
The thumbnail got me as clickbait....I have an 8.5 month old who needs longer naps😩
