  • Two 40mm lenses, the Pentax M 40mm 2.8, and the Konica Hexanon AR 40mm 1.8. I’ve always liked the 40mm perspective. Check out my video on the Panasonic 20mm for m43 if you haven’t seen it.
    The Pentax pancake is a lens I had always wanted to try. I bought it recently, and thought I'd compare it to another 40mm, the Hexanon AR. I was surprised that I like the Hexanon a lot more!

    I've used both! I liked the Pentax 40mm on my ME. Made for a small 35mm SLR setup. The Konica I adapted. I do think the Konica is an especially good buy for the price.

    Very pleasant video. I have been unlucky with the Hexanons, I have two and neither is very good. My Pentax pancake is freakishly sharp, but I agree that the focusing ring is hard to use.

    Ha. After a life of using Pentax lenses the focus rotation seems right. After all most brands I’ve used focus the same. Maybe not Leica. But the reverse wouldn’t feel correct. I know Olympus zoom rights rotate in the wrong direction. But depends what you’ve know

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 года назад +1

      Definitely. I think Nikon rotates the same way as Pentax, right? I somehow got used to the Leica way, and nowadays each time I put a Pentax lens in I catch myself going in the wrong direction.

      @@JuanBuhler Hmmm. I don’t know about Nikon but I do have Fuji, Olympus, Sigma, Zenitar and Praktica lenses and they all rotate focus the same as Pentax. Makes sense to me as clockwise goes towards infinity. Most zooms are the same, clockwise to longer focal length but the Olympus zoom I have is opposite and I’ll never get comfortable with it.

    FYI, the Hexanon 40mm f1.8 was introduced in 1978. The first Konica SLR that had it was the FS-1. The advert you show while you say it was introduced in 1976 shows a Konica TC, introduced in 1976, but the lens on it is not the pancake, but the compact version of the 50mm f1.7 lens, also introduced in 1976.

    Great to see more people "finding" Konica lenses, I have several, and they seem to offer a lot for the price.
    And I also use them on a Sony A7II 👍

      I have a 28 3.5, which I need to put on the camera and take out some time. Maybe it's a good lens to compare to the equivalent Takumar.

      @@JuanBuhler I have that lens as well, a rather late one.
      It´s pretty good, but maybe lacking some creative opportunity compared to a lower aperture lens, they are however very cheap, at least here in Sweden, and Europe for that matter.

    I adore 40mm. Never really cared for the rendering of that Pentax pancake 40 though... dunno what it is - I've had it a couple times and let it go both times.Really love anything from 35mm to the special Pentax FA43. I"d love to adapt the 38mm and 45mm from the Konica AutoS3 and AutoS2 someday - those two are arguably two of my favorite lenses ever, along with the FA31 which is simply amazing.. Anyhow, cheers - nice video.

      Interesting! Thanks for sharing. Maybe it's the five blades diaphragm in the pancake that messes up the rendering a bit?

      @@JuanBuhler Maybe part of it. And I can't recall the lens formula itself but it's clearly a simpler design that is a compromise for it's crazy compactness. For me though it just never hit, and I don't like how it handles. You just can't beat the size though. The Hexanon 40/1.8 is something just as special as the Pentax 43 though, easily as good, if not AF.

    • @JuanBuhler
      @JuanBuhler  2 года назад +1

      Totally agree, that pancake was a design compromise. I also agree about the handling, using it I keep having trouble finding the focusing ring when the camera is to my eye. The Hexanon handles a lot better. One extra detail for me (I think I mention it in the video) is that I got used to the way the Hexanon (and Leicas, and most other lenses) rotates for focus--Pentax now feels backwards and that adds to the time it takes to focus it manually.

    Dang, the Pentax is tiny! 40mm is an interesting focal length and I've had the Konica for a few years, now, but I really like the Pentax-M series and it would be a nice addition to the set!

      I just got the Konica as well. Tell me, does yours suffer from lower contrast and bluish ghosting/color fringing at f1.8 when there is strong light present? It's gone if I close it to around f2 (moving the ring between clicks).
      My lense came with scratched coating on the front element and some rattling noise inside, but otherwise works fine. so I'm wondering if it's worth looking for a second copy or if loss of contrast and slight ghosting is normal wide open?

    • @MarcoAries
      @MarcoAries Год назад +1

      @@TheRoadrunner11 Don't worry about the rattle, all Konicas are like that, it's just the way they're built.
      Wide open it is softer, with some blooming and chromatic aberration, yes; again, it's a common trait of the whole line of lenses, but it would seem yours might be a little worse due to the scratches... I've review the 40 and a few others on my channel, in case you need some samples to compare it to.

    • @TheRoadrunner11
      @TheRoadrunner11 Год назад +1

      @@MarcoAries Hey thanks for the clarification. It's my first Konica that I got. I guess I don't need to look for a second copy then. Funnily enough the blooming appears only for natural light. I tried yesterday pointing the camera directly at an LED lamp and focused on the label at its base. And there was no ghosting or blooming, or even abnormal flaring. So maybe the scratches aren't having as big an effect as I'd feared.
      I shall check out your channel later today! Thanks for the hint :)
