I wanted The Will of the Many to keep going. I didn't want it to stop. So I totally get where you're coming from when you're reading a book that's so good, you don't care how long it is.

I literally just sold my signed unread Broken Binding editions last night as my TBR was getting far too long and needed a clear out. I was sad to see them go as I had read go things about this series, but you just made that feel a little easier for me now.

Great review. Felt the same but I am also over 33 years old.
Lot of “book tube” skews younger I think.

I think it had potential but it had no real direction. The character dialogue was awkward, and it didn't feel like there was much depth to them. I found I couldn't care about the characters so I gave up around 500pages in or so. Prose wasn't too good either, and the characters felt like they were transported from the 21st century to a fantasy world.

As usual Matt, our opinions have aligned again. My review from 2021 was basically: "too long and cliched". This is why I'm sitting in #2 on the TBR contest. I have read most of the books this month and we usually think the same about things.

When I first read The Ember Blade I really enjoyed it, mind you this was one of the first 3 fantasy books I read. It was cool at the time, but If I had to go back and invest into reading another 800 page book, I don't know that I would read this one again. I have to agree with you on this review after reading significantly more than I used to, this just leaves something to be desired.

The thing about a book that's too cliche is that it only feels that way after you've read too many other similar ones.

I haven't read it yet but I have the 1st and 2nd. Probably get to it next year. Great review. I can appreciate the fact that you've seen it all and are wanting something that is different.

Hadn't heard of this one, checked out the blurb and I bounced straight off of it.
Takes a very standard diegetic summary and then suddenly throws in "The sword of kings, the Excalibur of his people."
Unless Excalibur is a known quantity in this universe that tells me this book probably isn't for me.

I've heard someone else say this book was terrible. Maybe it was Library of Alenzandria. I heard his review several years ago and never gave this book a chance.
I love how you keep making snide remarks about First Binding. That book is one of the few that I've ever dnf'd. Lol

For me it was a three star book. very tropy, very late 80's early 90's feeling. But I did like it enough to read book 2 in the series. Which is about on the same level.

A hot take! Bummer you didn't like it. I thought it was a great book and I felt very immersed in the world. Only complaint I had was the act structure, since the book restarts so many times.

I agree with this as well, even though I rated it higher than Matt. To me, it read as an homage to LOTR and Wheel of Time, with incredible similarities to Fellowship and Eye of the World. It wasn't as good as either, but I love those books, and I still thought this was fairly well written. As far as re-imaginings of LOTR tropes, I have it as worse than WoT, but better than Shannara.
I feel like this is probably really popular with people who either LOVE LOTR and are looking for that same feel, and who maybe haven't read WoT or Shannara.
If it follows WoT and diverges from the script in book 2 and becomes its own thing, it could be good. If it follows Shannara and doesn't diverge from what has been done before, then my rating of the first book will go down in retrospect.

I mentioned on your April TBR that this book's writing was very amateurish, like an 8th grader using ChatGPT. Course I feel that way about the John Gwynn books, so I guess it can cut either way.

No, no, no I am with you! I actually feel as though I am reading different books to everyone else recently! I found this one, well I just had a big sigh! Just not good enough! Character development, storytelling, world building all need work.
Where are all the Joe Abercrombies and Robin Hobbs????

TEB was soooo derivative. I hated it. So boring, nothing new. It was hard to finish and I actually read the book, no audio book, but I actually read the paperback and it was such a chore to finish. The only reason I finished it was it was a book club read. Everyone loved the book but me!!

Slight Spoilers**** I could get a bit behind the similar storylines of LOTR, WOT with an excalibur sword. But the sword which was the main quest is where he decides to change things up. All the effort to get the sword and it really seems like there is nothing special about it, besides it's symbolism for the rebelion. The blurp on the back of book two makes me think the sword means even less than i hoped. It almost feels like he differs this from LOTR and WOT by making the ember blade less magical. It only a symbol.

A lot of these modern fantasy books inspired by classic fantasy are literally just the same exact stories, but significantly worse in every way possible. Worse prose, worse characters, worse dialogue, worse magic and world building, etc. Just makes me want to go back and read the classics lol.
