I actually can understand most of what you're saying even though its somewhat complicated but what really shines through is your enthusiasm for everything mental health related and your sincere desire to explain it to the world! Thank you, as someone who has suffered and got relief from a antipsychotic its nice to hear the details of how they work and what they do, I never got these details from my psychiatrist, and its interesting!!
I thought you must have been recording during a quiet moment on night shift 😅 Mad respect to you for recording at 7am before your shift though! Thank you for powering through and recording videos for us - we appreciate you! 🤗💖
@@tired_of_everything0 I'm fairly certain PSSD is related to SSRI's and not antipsychotics (which is what the video is about). However, I'm sure Dr Syl would gladly do a video about PSSD too 🤷♀

i am not sure which neuroleptic i took for a few months (took many different meds on my journey to find the right one and each needs a few weeks to take effect and a few weeks to flush it out before you can introduce a new one). i just remember how it felt being under the neuroleptics influence. it put me in a weird paradox. i would listen to a conversation in the room, become aware i should be able to contribute to it and then could not. feeling trapped in my head wasn't nice. i am fine with being made stupid but at least make it so i am not aware of it^^. you too have a wonderful day.
I wish you lived in 🇨🇦 we need someone like you here! You videos are so informative and this video helped me understand the medications. A family member is new to this complex world of mental health treatment and your videos are a great help!

I always get the side eye from people when I mention that I take antipsychotics. I hear them talked about on the news when people have committed crimes, so people assume it’s for “crazy people”.
You are fab You will be an awesome psychiatrist. I am on both quetiapine and vortioxetine...and also take pregabalin and/or lorazepam as most days.....does this mean that these two drugs are counterinitiative?
I have been told to take Gabapentin daily, which is like pregablin, and quetiapine at night. I am curious why these antiepileptics are prescribed for psychiatric illness, is it to calm down neural activity or whàt? I suspect it tones down mania somewhat.
Personally I'm such a nerd and love me some psychopharmacology. All my friends said I shoulda been a Psych NP. Lolz. Love how passionate you are when explaining, I'm legit the same 😂 Keep up the good content 🫶🏽🧠
I have tried 3 different atypical anti-psychotics and always had akathisia as a side effect. I took Benztropine to try and treat it but it didn't work. Fortunately my schizophrenia isn't too bad so talking therapies have worked very well.
In this video you don’t seem like such a bad guy but clearly you must be evil for choosing to become a psychiatrist. Injecting people with drugs against their will is absolutely evil especially if that person doesn’t need that medication like in my case and probably many other cases. Thanks for making this video to inform people about antipsychotics.
Hello, Dr. Syl my friend was on 10 mg of Abilify for auditory hallucinations with paranoia and anxiety it did not help much then the doctor added Olanzipine slowly increased from 5 to 10 mg. However, her auditory hallucinations increased. She has autism with psychosis I think Olanzipine increases the auditory hallucinations. please advise
Hi Dr Syl, What kind of books would you recommend for someone who wants to learn more about psychiatric assessment? From, a Registered Nurse in Aged Care!
Loxapine is first generation, although it is a little bit like a second generation as it has fairly high affinity for serotonin receptors. Were you not offered lithium for long term maintenance treatment?
@@replaceablehead Oh yes, I've been on lithium for almost 20 years. I take 750mg lithium, 10mg loxapine, and 10mg paroxetine. It's a good combination for my mood symptoms, OCD, and paranoia.
I think of the generations of antipsychotics by its prevalence of extrapyramidal side effects. Other than that, they all have the same painful side effects. Since psych meds have never helped me - I have tried every since category of psych med except MAOI because of neuro issues and other non-psych meds that work well that I would have to stop taking - but they have caused a huge list of painful problems so I categorize them by side-effect. There are 5 categories from annoying to feels-like-death and risperidone is in the latter category. Lasted three days on it. "There are treatments for these side effects". Yeah, that is how people get on 6 or more medications. That is not a solution.

Seroquel is an awful drug I had horrible experience on it and the withdrawals were a nightmare. I wish someone had told me how bad it was I would have never taken it in the first place
It's an effective treatment for short term acute agitation and mania. It's very sedating due to a high affinity for serotonin. It's useful as a PRN but I wouldn't use it long term if you have any other option. I'm going to save you ten years of research, just go and buy Nassir Ghaemi's book on pharmacology, it is by far the best information available. Dr Josef is a very good doctor and I can't find any fault with the information he presents.
From where I stand (based on my personal experiences RE; psych meds; especially "antipsychotics"); psych meds r actually "chemical pacifiers" which r very unnecessary.

i'm not sure viewing cocktailing psychiatric medicine as a form of art is much of a good omen. that sounds like med school white propaganda.

Can you please do a video on autism, delusions, paranoia, hearing voices and the use of antipsychotics to treat?
Please make a video about the side effects to the bowels with constipation and bloating.
I wonder if at some point you might do a video on modern treatment options for ASPD, or recommend a video to watch.

Can antipsychotics induce psychosis such as visual hallucinations? Specifically Abilify?
Ms. Young; "Antipsychotics" do indeed induce psychosis.
Meds can have "Paradoxical side-effects"
