  • Ex-pro cyclist Hank put on a backpack, saddled up his new Orbea Orca and took to the streets of Bath to see how much he could earn in 24 hours riding for Deliveroo. One day of riding, one day of deliveries - starting on a Friday evening and ending after the Saturday lunch rush. All the proceeds will be donated to the Motor Neuron Disease Association via local charity The MND Tee.

    Hank - A huge thank you - I work for the MND Association and am a massive GCN fan and indeed I'm their unofficial 'cycling correspondent' and have done quite a few challenges for them as well as pushing cycling as transport to our offices in Northampton - and yes every penny makes a massive difference in supporting people with this horrible condition and trying to find a cure - so I know many of the comments are about Deliveroo but thank you for giving your time and helping people who really need it.

      MND is an incredibly cruel disease and its great to see support for charities fighting against it.
      If you don't know, motor neurone disease (also ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease) basically destroyed the nerves that control your muscles. So an otherwise healthy person becomes unable to tie their shoes, then to walk, then to talk, then to eat, then to breathe. They become trapped in their body which would be working just fine if the signals were still able to get from the brain to the body. It is 100% fatal and uncurable, and we don't know what causes it.

    I worked for Deliveroo for a few years. I got t-boned by an inattentive driver on a delivery and my shoulder was dislocated. I knew I had to call the rider support team before going to a&e, otherwise my account would be flagged, my 'stats' ruined and I'd lose all my shifts for a fortnight +.
    I called support to let them know what had happened. Their response? "Oh, does this mean you can't complete the delivery?"
    The tone of that response honestly sums up my experience with them perfectly. Immoral and unethical to the core. Illegally fired staff in Leeds (UK) for attempting to unionise to combat the terrible controls they were forcing upon riders they incorrectly labelled as 'self-employed'. Avoid their business at all costs. They are everything wrong with late capitalism.

    • @NihilisticHedonism
      @NihilisticHedonism 2 года назад +16

      You sound like a disgruntled former courier - you knew what you had signed up for. It is self-employed so if they don't want to use you anymore they're within their rights to do so - just like you can choose to change the supermarket you shop at. They don't need to be concerned about your welfare as they hold no accountability for it.

    • @SamuelNewham
      @SamuelNewham 2 года назад +91

      no, Marco. Terminating someone’s contract for organising unionisation in the UK is completely illegal. I was involved in protests about it at the time which received support from members of parliament so I think that tells all.
      ‘They don’t need to care about your welfare’ - unfortunately for will shu and his gaggle of investors, they will. Uber recently lost a court case that argued their drivers are self employed and will now be paying them minimum wage and have to offer sick pay and other basic benefits. This will soon carry over to Deliveroo and other companies claiming bogus self-employment.
      The gig economy is dying and it’s glorious to see.

      @@SamuelNewham Deliveroo, JustEat and Uber(Eats) all operate this model. It doesn't suit everyone - there's probably more cons than pros working in partnership with them. Sorry to balance this out, but there are some negatives too. You are your own boss, to a degree, but you don't set your own pay rate. You're a Freelancer competing with hundreds of other freelancers. There are ways to cheat the system where some freelancers will profit at the expense to others. Insurance? Questionable. Road safety by other colleagues - non existent, as they are competing for orders, so they're likely to ride wrecklessly.
    HANK, if you want a real challenge, ride the job for a week. Try 30 hours or more. Riding for one day knowing that's all your doing, it's easy to see all the positives. But wait until you get spilt fluids in your backpack, late orders, annoyed customers, impatient motorists or a lack of orders and then try and bounce back from this. Oh, and let's hope that nice bike doesn't get stolen while delivering an order.....

      20s into the video and I am already thinking this is just one more platform to exploit people disguised as a good opportunity for revenue. They're everywhere in the world now, the game plan is they bring ppl in with initial decent pay then it starts decreasing, competition increases and you get less orders, so you try to work harder. In the end you increase the chances of getting injured, remember you have no labour rights, no decent insurance, you may get blocked from the app for no good reason and so on. In parallel the app is always charging the restaurants, so to offset you have to pay more when you order, the app makes money money, pay a small percentage to the courrier and make lots of money.

      I do agree with the points made here, but just to add, Deliveroo and companies like it may have big revenues, but they don't actually make a profit, and it's questionable when they will. A big part of me thinks this is a bubble, and when it pops and theses companies go under it's going to be the riders who suffer more as the work will disappear.

    Maybe they could mention how Deliveroo and its parent company Delivery Hero actively fight against workers' rights and avoid providing their workers with the basics like health insurance, employment insurance, etc.. by hiring them as "independent contractors". I delivered for Foodora (another Delivery Hero subsidiary), and from my experience, Friday nightstand weekends are always the most lucrative, so this is an inflated estimate of how much riders earn. And what he doesn't mention is that, yes you can stop when it rains, but for most people the rent and grocery bills don't stop because of rain. The problem is indeed doing it full time as your actual 'job'. Since they don't do any kind of employee-rights you are sick out of luck if anything happens . Injury , sickness pregnancy , vacation pension just to name some things. All stuff you gotta think about yourself, because you are basically self-employed.
      Now if you are an urban cyclist and you live in our near a big city.. you might as well turn deliveroo on as a training each Saturday night :). But if you _rely_ on it for income, they are bastards . Rightly so most EU countries are changing things around so that these 'you work for us but are technically self-employed' constructions are not possible anymore.

    • @jorismak

      @@josk249 very true. People can say no.
      But 1) they started doing things as not being able to work for other delivery agents . Which goes against any kind of self-employed kind of deal 2) they made it seem at first as like they are 'an employer' while they weren't . So most countries have different policies now to protect people from themselves. I understand you might think 'well people should know what they are getting into ', and you are absolutely right. But a government has the job to protect it's citizens and they deemed it necessary to intervene.
      Also, full time normal employment contracts being terminated and 'converted' into deliveroo agreements (and thereby not having to supply employee rights anymore ) is the big thing where - at least here in the Netherlands - the most objection was. There were other delivery agents which really employed people. They were bought out by deliveroo , and contracts terminated 'because that is how deliveroo works'. Which simply isn't allowed here.

    @evocaeden2932 2 года назад +51

    This is a good video, it's a good cause and an honest look at what a pro-level cyclist can accomplish. So Thanks! A couple things though -
    I am a Deliveroo rider in Cork, Ireland. I work full time at it. I actually used to work full time as an engineer with Deliveroo part-time. But I quit the job because I loved cycling enough to want to do it full time. I ride 8-10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I easily clock up 1000km per week in that time, every week. So fitness and calorie burn is intense with this job.
    I have settled into a rhythm for full time, so I work pretty much 2pm to midnight every shift, and then my "evening" starts and I go to bed at 7am. That is the beauty of this job, you determine your own rhythm in order to be the most efficient for you. And every week it feels like my power is increasing bit by bit.
    BUT - after time you realise there are certain drawbacks to Deliveroo itself. If there are a lot of riders active at one time, it can become difficult to get an order, because there aren't enough customers to keep all the riders active. So you have to stick with it even through dry periods - it can be quite nerve-wracking. Also, people will be more likely to order food if the weather is bad, so funnily enough the best times to be active is when the weather is at its worst. I was active during Storm Ophelia a few years ago, and ended up making almost twice as much as a normal day in just a couple of hours.
    The biggest two things I have realised is if you do it full time:
    1 - Your bike wears out FAST. You will need to maintain our bike well week on week, and probably get it serviced fully every month just to keep it road-worthy.
    2 - It's DANGEROUS. This is a job where you are against the clock all of the time, and this eventually means you need to take risks. This is something the rider decides to do, but it's a reality of the job if you want to make more money. And working in a city with heavy traffic means there is always a threat at every moment. Deliveroo are finally starting to account for this with sick pay and rider insurance, so at least it's starting to go in the right direction.

      I enjoyed cycling to work more than the work itself, though I never hated it. So I wanted to pursue the thing I really wanted, which was cycling.
      So it's either work as a courier, or go find a sponsor and get a late start as a pro cyclist. I don't know how bad roads or the air is where you are, but Ireland has some of the best air quality in the world and winter here is not that bad. I reckon I'll be fine.

You understand the whole fixie/single speed thing when riding in cities all the time as your bike just wears out!
      Also yes, dangerous work. I love cycling in town, but especially once it gets dark cars just don't pay attention. I used to pretend I was invisible and assume that no cars could see me - that way I could avoid more accidents.

    People who don't need money romanticizing precarious gig work that's known for exploiting the working poor. Is there anything GCN won't do for money?

    I was thinking about doing this in my spare time. I live in NYC and there is a huge demand but sometimes you have to go up into apartment buildings and I worry about bike theft.

    It's nice having someone guard your Superbike....😎
    I would hate to do a 36th floor delivery in cycling shoes....☹️

    Just what happens if you are sick or have an accident? Are you covered then?

    A new challenge for Hank - bicycle gymnastics where one does handstands on the seat, stands on the handlebars, etc.

    This actually looks so much fun! But yeah, safety and gear are top priority.

    Did anyone else frantically check at 1:59 to see if Hank picked up his phone from the bench after leaving it there two seconds before? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    I love the fact that Hank is leaving his phone on the bench at first. Not too many orders coming his way then, eh?

    I remember back in the 90's in Sydney Australia there use to be bicycle couriers working in the CBD delivering documents. With the today's technology I'm not sure they exist now but if a similar thing occurs in the UK I would love GCN taking on that role.
