This is pure speculation but I've always thought of Shelly as one of those tacky fake parrots people would use for decoration in the 60s. I have no idea if that's what they were going for, but it seemed pretty on-brand with Stephen's original theming for SpongeBob.

This is a very good theory. I don't think there's anything deep to this, so it's best not to over-analyze it. It really comes across more as some kind of running gag, in which case your explanation fits that purpose perfectly and gives it an explanation.
that's what i thought! since the other clam/scallop birds actually act like real birds, Shelly is much more akin to a fake decorative parrot/songbird. as Patchy said, pretty much a pet rock.

Wow, it is possible that the writers haven't been aware of him(?) for most of the show's run and the background artists have just been diligently putting it there because it's in all the original plates and concept art of Spongebob's room.
Your videos in general have really opened my eyes to how, even though the writing and animation has changed so much from when the show began, the background art has been remarkably consistent.

Yeah they probably don’t know what the character even is, they just think it’s part of the background
There's also some episodes like "Unreal Estate" and "SpongeBob's Place" that feature the cage, but without Shelley herself. Though it's entirely possible she escapes the cage off-screen before something else comes in and fills up the cage.

Would be hilarious if they make a Halloween episode, where Shelly makes a sound that drives Spongebob insane. with nobody knowing where it comes from.

The filter feed from the water, so she was probably like a sort of robot vacuum or air freshener
Consider that she's never shown moving or making noise, and that show Spongebob never acknowledges her. Add on the "pet rock" comment from Patchey, and I'm pretty sure you could say she's literally just a statue, or prop, or empty shell.
Course, that game line claims he's alive, but there's nothing other than that to really support that.
Technically she makes angry bird noises in Revenge of the Flying Dutchman video game if the player jumps up high enough and touches her cage.
I mean, there is many evidence that she is in fact alive, like in the game where SpongeBob says his scallop ran away or that scene where it’s implied that shelly broke out of her cage.

I’m glad you covered Shelly. I sometimes mention in conversations about Spongebob that he has a pet “bird”, but people usually think I’m talking about junior. I have to clarify that it’s not junior and that he’s had it since day one. I always knew about Shelly since the first episode and even kept track of her appearances, but I only recently found out that she has a name.

Character model inconsistencies- I'm sure the spots and dots on many Spongebob characters have been off or incorrectly placed over the years, but the mistakes simply went unnoticed.
I'm pretty sure those are just animation errors.

Gary’s shell is basically the equivalent of clothing. He changes his shell every now and again, hence why each one looks a little different.
I mean, classic Patrick looks way different from modern Patrick. It could just be character designs evolving.

The reason for the distinction as a Scallop is because they actually possess the ability to swim around underwater, unlike clams. They actually sort of flap their shells like underwater birds. If you looked it up, you may have found this out for your video. Great vids anyways though man, cheers.

They are bivalve mollusks, and many clams do not attach themselves.

The amount of knowledge you have about early spongebob is freaking fascinating. Easter eggs, lore, every episode, season, etc. And I love how you talk in the vids very casually. Saying things like, "It's a very indirect way of making us understand that he also know he exists.." or "clams are obviously birds" You're just VERY in depth with what we're all probably thinking and It's very relaxing and casual. Love the vids.

clams dont move much, kinda just dragging them selves along with a foot (in the show, they are usually the big ones that dont fly around). Scallops can actually swim and it almost looks like they fly underwater (hence them being birds.) they also look flat compared to clams.

Maybe Shelly is just a plastic singing clam, like these singing fishes. Maybe the battery is simply out, because otherwise it would be really annoying. This could definitely explain her in a new episode.
Clams have smoothed edges along their shells, while scallops typically have ribboned edges. Clams burrow under the sand and stay there, while scallops constantly move and swim. Clams have a chewier texture and saltier taste, while scallops tend to be softer and have a more subtle flavor.
I first discovered this other pet because of the SpongeBob movie game, after that I started noticing it in episodes.
Scallops and clams are both bivalves (mollusks with two shells) but Scallops can actually swim in the water while clams are either sedentary (don’t move) or use their muscular foot to move around the sea floor. Also Scallops have rudimentary “eyes”

Scallops are birds in SpongeBob because irl scallops swim with a fluttering like motion.
Also the biggest difference between clams and scallops is just that, scallops are extra mobile while clams are more sedentary. Scallops tend to sit on top of the sand to be able to flutter away from potential predators while clams usually move with the use of a "foot" and usually dig into the sand to avoid predators.

Scallops have ridged and "wavy" shells, and are active swimmers. Clams have smooth and rounded shells, and spend almost all their time burrowed under the sea floor. Technically all the clams in spongebob are scallops.
