I'm here because I see the same behavioral attributes in both food addicts and substance abuse addicts. Alcoholism isn't a moral failing. It just forces itself into a glass and makes you drink it. I wish everyone would look at it in this way. (Said every alcoholic.)

@@kathrynj.hernandez8425 It's still not a moral failing; it's a symptom of a deeper malaise that then becomes a problem in itself. Whether the substance used to change one's emotional state is junk food, drugs, alcohol, or something else, we go for it as an antidote to some kind of emotional pain, and then the dopamine produced by all these substances, including bad food, keeps us hooked. The way out is not to see it as a moral failing but to try to understand what is happening beyond or beneath the food or alcohol or drugs, and to deal with that imbalance through a combination of psychological and physical approaches.

The reason I suspect this is when I'm busy outdoors or with someone I like, I don't think about eating and my appetite is very low. I would still eat but out of necessity or the off chance that I've been so active then pass a restaurant, not compulsively. I think if this is true that's my way out. But I'd say to you, eating must work enough or we wouldn't keep doing it. However it's obviously not the solution or we wouldn't keep needing to do it in excess.

Me too!!! For 2 years I would eat from the time I came home from work, until going to bed. Anything and everything - and ganed 40lbs.
My stomach was enormous, bloated with all that food, so much it hurt! ...so I waited 30 Minutes or so, and then kept eating.
I have it under control now.
If I lived alone, I wouldn't buy garbage. But my husband likes bad food, and is skinny no matter what he eats.... so, to break my habit, 2 rules:
#1 I asked him to lock the kitchen door when he leaves the house for work at 1:30pm.
      Because evenings is the worst.
      #2 NO EATING AFTER 6PM
Baby steps. And it's working 😊
Been doing it for 3 weeks now.
      Breakthrough!!
Yesterday, around 8pm I discovered 1/2 of a Clementine from lunch and gave myself permission to eat it, but I didn't.
      It was the weirdest thing!!!!
Not because I was looking at the clock, but because I literally had no Appetit, no desire, no feeling of wanting to put it in my mouth.
      That's freedom 🙏✌💚
Not being controlled by urges, addictions.
      One day at a time
Good luck to everyone, peace and love 🙏✌💚

I am soooooo disgusted with myself for overeating. I can do ok during the day but at dinner( between 5:00/6pm) I am overeating and continue to do so until I fall asleep and then if i get up for any reason i get something and take it back to bed with me. I've woke up with peanut butter crackers still in my hand. This was pretty interesting and educational. What bums me out is being able to intellectualize this with your brain but still continue to overeat/binge food. I've done alot of the usual things to stop, lose weight but my food addiction wins out every time.
Even though I'm pretty discouraged by this and my weight I'm definitely not going to give up finding a solution.

You should start overeating broccoli - no joke
Eat an entire crown of broccoli each day - start when you get up in the morning and do not go to bed until it’s gone - eat the stem, eat every bit of it, even if you have to cut the thick stem into small pieces - I bite right into it like it’s an apple; I love me some broccoli and it’s not always easy for everyone to eat it that way….
Also, drink 96 oz of water every day - buy 3 bottles of water, 33 oz each - that’s 99oz - buy two regular bottles that are 33oz each and buy another 33oz bottle that’s either SmartWater or Essentia water - both of these have electrolytes and sodium bicarbonate and all sorts of things to help you stay hydrated while drinking so much water every day; so start with 1 regular bottle, make it gone by lunch, the 2nd bottle (smart water or essentia) drink that with lunch and into the afternoon, and the 3rd regular bottle, start that in the evening
Snack all day on the broccoli crown - the water and broccoli will make you feel very full
In the morning for breakfast, have a protein shake (one of the small ones from a 4 pack, I would recommend Premier Protein or Atkins Plus, both taste good and are 30g of protein) - also, have an orange, not a huge oversized on, a regular small/mid sized orange - you can have a cup of coffee but it needs to be black, no sugar no creamer, nothing - just straight black coffee - have a cup or two….
For lunch, have a 2nd protein shake and 4 slices of deli turkey, add some salt and pepper and be generous with both of them, the extra salt will be helpful to your body because all the water you’re drinking will be washing the sodium that’s in your body away, so the salt is a good replenish….. have a handful or two of lightly salted peanuts…. And maybe a couple stalks of celery….
For dinner - have another 4 slices of turkey (or a plain can of tuna fish - pick one but not both) cup with salt and pepper, and you can either have a sweet potato (microwaved, plain with nothing) or some brown rice - the minute rice brand makes cups of rice that can be microwaved (no water needed, pull the cover off the top and place in the microwave for 1 minute and bam, you have a helping of delicious brown rice, eat it plain) and feel free to have another handful or two of peanuts - small handfuls….
You’ll be amazed at how full you feel all day long - do this for two weeks straight - this is a good cleanse and a great way to shock your body and digestive system so they can reset; the gorging you’re doing in the evening is partially due to not feeling full, and once you’re around all that delicious u healthy food, the mechanism that’s used to control that u healthy eating just goes out the window and bam, you’re overeating a lot of unhealthy food again…. your body needs that dopamine fix from the bad food you’re eating because it’s addicted to it, I’ve been there so I know exactly what it’s like - you need to break the daily cycle that your body is clocked to doing and detox from it
The cleanse and shock will reset your system for those 2 weeks to get your body out of the habit of rewarding itself with unhealthy food at roughly the same time every evening….
I hope this helps, and good luck to you - I’m dead serious, if you try this you’ll feel like a whole new person in just 2-3 days into it - sticking strict to it for two weeks and then going to a more healthy diet is an excellent approach to breaking yourself of bad habits like that; and you’ll not only feel amazing but you’ll also be real proud of yourself too
You can do it - you have way more strength than you know - look at the person in the mirror and tell them they aren’t going to keep you from being healthy; not anymore…. 🔥👊

I’m in my early 40’s used to be an emotional eater for decades which became bad habits to then try restrictive diets & always came full circle there are real consequences as you get older. I was pretty fecked, been over 3 months I went whole food plant based. It’s given me a much healthier relationship with food I don’t crave ‘comfort’ foods anymore. Sugar/carb fix? Oat chia fruit smoothies or baking 3 ingredient oat dark chocolate banana cookies or a baked potato with lentils etc. No junk food, no take away, no cheap supermarket junk. Whole grains only rice, oats, barley, pasta, nuts, seeds, all fruits, all vegetables, avocados are super filling, legumes & pulses. I don’t count calories or portions I don’t stress about food anymore, it’s sustainable. Our gut bacteria is messed up with the sh!t food out there and the human microbiome is linked to Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, depression, hormones, skin conditions, IBS/Chrons heart health & weight. My blood work has completely changed, dropped off my meds most importantly I don’t get the cravings and when I eat I actually feel satisfied. High fibre foods are crucial to human health even if you looked at flexitarian method, my daughter has fish or meat twice a month the rest of the time WFPB. I seen a friend after several months n she was like 😮 you look younger. Good luck it’s not easy. Fibre Fuelled by Will Bulieswicz is a fascinating book on our gut health it really put things into perspective for me don’t wait like I did, till the degenerative diseases catch up with you. 😕

Junk food is more like a drug than a food.
Whole plant foods are healthy and not addictive. No one gets addicted to broccoli or green tea. But people get damaging addictions to cheese, meat, alcohol, etc. Seems that the more refined and palatable something is the more addictive it is.
Cheese was my big dietary addiction, and giving that up with Neil Barnard’s advice was a big turning point to have a plant based diet

      I actually kind of disagree.
I completely cut out all processed foods and saturated fats and I started craving fruit like mad. I would eat 10-15 pieces of fruit a day to the point it started affecting my blood sugar. I was concerned so cut out fruit and then became obsessed with carrots to the point where my skin started to go yellow. The Dr told me to lay off the carrots so then I would crave lettuce. I would go through a head of lettuce and an entire celery a day. I would actually dream about having a huge green salad as I was driving home.

Focus on a healthy lifestyle and the weight-loss will take care of it's self. Success requires the discovery of a motivational trigger that you can maintain. I have forced myself to carry a small card (credit card-size) that has two sides. One side lists poisons (dairy, meat, sugars, pop, oils) and the other side lists medicines (fruit, vegetables, beans, seeds). Before I decide to eat anything, I look at the card and remind myself of whether it is a poison or medicine. Who wants to eat poison? Conclusion: find your motivation and stick to it for life.

I was extremely skinny before, being 5’9 100lbs although my diet was mostly takeout foods and junk, I never had the urge to eat a lot so I was a skeleton even on that shit diet. During the time I wasn’t allowed to eat all I could think about was those foods, like pizza, Taco Bell, Chinese food, cookies, cake, all that bad stuff and how much I missed eating it. I was allowed to eat again after those 7 months after passing an examination and I haven’t been able to stop eating. First I told myself I was just gonna satisfy the cravings for the food I haven’t had for all that time, but it’s actually starting to feel like an addiction. The other day I ate 50$ worth of junk food I ordered off doordash in 2 days. And just like they mentioned in this video I’ve found myself feeling like I have to be secretive about my eating habits, because when my mom has confronted me about it or tried to limit my eating I found myself irritated, which I felt bad about because I know it’s not like me at all and that it’s just for my own good. I’m trying now to eat better foods and eat less, although it’s a lot harder than I thought especially considering I’ve been a twig most of my life up to now.

Where he talks about the relationship between bacon and colorectal cancer, he's referencing a study that was carried out to investigate the link between cured meats and cancer. It was an epidemiological study, which is the weakest form of science, and I spent days digging into the design and data from this study. The study indeed showed a correlation between the ingestion of cured meats and the prevalence of specific cancers. The group that had the highest consumption of cured meats had something like a 40% increased risk of developing colon cancer; this finding certainly warrants further investigation, but it is a correlation, so it cannot prove causation. The group eating more cured meats also had far higher rates of obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and they exercised far less. This is called healthy user bias; those who eat the food they are told not to are far more likely to engage in other behaviours that are deemed unhealthy, thus skewing the figures disproportionately. This is why you cannot derive causation from epidemiology; we need long-term interventional studies that allow us to control for variables.

You mentioned yourself that it is a repeated cycle, which is the habit loop that Mr. Barnard mentioned in the video. You most likely have multiple of those habit loops that you need to break separately rather than taking drastic measures like an entirely different diet to break all of them at once, forcing you fail. Identify your eating patterns and the cues that trigger them and experiment with different methods of slowly breaking the habit loops. Even gradual changes like replacing full-sugar cola with a diet one or not using that sauce with your fries is a big change and can get that ball rolling. At least from my experience your diet often reflects on your life situation where stress, boredom, convenience, etc caused that person to build up that habit.

I am so bloody confused! There are doctors all over the place advocating keto (that is, bacon and lots of it) as the best possible diet. I personally know 2 people who have lost a lot eating tons of the stuff. And yet it's going to kill us all.

Hi Dana! I'm about to graduate as a qualified nutrition so maybe I can shed some light on it? Hope you don't mind. Ok, so Keto is great short term- it removes the excess glycogen from the liver and switches the body to using ketones as fuel, so you are then switching to burning fat instead of carbs. Carbs also contain more water so in the body stored as glycogen they take up more space. That's why in the first few days of keto people look thinner in the face--water loss. I have been doing a lot of academic research into keto, diets, sustainability and health. Some studies (RCTS) have shown significant weight loss with those people who did a high protein low carb (mostly under 50 g, often 20g) for a period of 12 weeks. I myself experimented over the last 3 years with Veganism, Carnivore, Keto, and Mediterranean diet. The problem with Keto specifically to address this issue is that it relies a lot on meat. There are really two problems I see with this. IN terms of sustainability and ethics it just isn't sustainable for the planet, and YES i have looked at the problem of soy crops/mono crops wiping out natural forests as an argument against processed vegan foods too. There are no longitudinal studies that have examined the effects of a keto diet and whether it puts added strain on the kidneys, and the liver. I was Keto for 1.5 years strict Keto. Yep I lost weight. But I am really convinced of the health benefits of plants and vegetables--essentially whole food eating. Here is my two cents worth from over 6 years of studying nutrition obsessively. including research. Eat whole foods. Kick the sugar and processed foods. Greet food as a true healer for your body. This is the most liveable, sustainable way to get healthy and stay healthy. Don't go down the middle isles. Spend time learning to cook a few excellent meals you enjoy using whole foods. For a life of enjoying health and being sustainable for the planet and less cruel I personally have now shifted to a mainly vego diet. I do still eat fish once a week and some eggs and cheese. But for me it was a slow realisation of changing the actual relationship to food, learning what different foods do...and how some foods hijack your body and make you an addict. All the best health to you. xxxx

I can live w/o. fast food. I find unsatiable. But I LOVE my own cooking. I love the whole eating experience from marketing, preparing and completeing a delicious home cooked meal.
Its hard for me to lose weight because of that.
