If you look deeper into lifehouse, you will see an interview where pets says that he only imagined the suits as for civilians to download media, he didn't think of anyone besides the government being able to upload, he admitted in the same interview that he did not in fact predict the internet.
There is a TON of appreciation for The Who now adays - as us teenagers have matured, they've realised how influential and 'GOOD' The Who are... I've always liked them as my fav band
I listened to Tommy, Quadrophenia and Lifehouse at a rather emotional point of my teenage life so it probably had a bigger impact than it would have. Certainly helped me through many a long lonely busride home. :P
I've always loved the synth part on this song. The tempo is faster on the final version, though. I put both in my "Who's Best.." playlist. Thanks for the upload!
If you are a guitar player you can create a rough approximation of the synth part using the purple Boss Flagler pedal. The have a suggested setting in the manual.
Like this song in the future. Don't know which version better.....the one where Keith drums. Much heavier could play this in a club today. Sounds like it has a beat.
You can hear it in the street See it in the dragging feet The word is getting out about control Spies they're come and gone The story travels on The only quiet place is inside your soul From tree to tree From you to me Traveling twice as fast as on any freeway Every single dream Is wrapped up in the scheme They all get carried on the relay Pass it on Someone disapproves Of what you say or do I was asked to see what I could learn you Don't believe your eyes They're seeing only lies What is done in the first place don't concern you From tree to tree From you to me Traveling twice as fast as on any freeway Every single dream Is wrapped up in the scheme They all get carried on the relay
A Maestro USS-1? Hmm, I always thought it was one of Pete's ARPs, the 2600 specifically. Either way it's an amazing sound, to the uninitiated rock fan it must have sounded ultra-cutting-edge, high-tech in '71. Here's one case where Pete's demo really does sound anemic compared to the Who's released version, especially on the choruses. There's a big gaping hole in the mix where a prominent acoutstic guitar ultimately was inserted. And this song really just *needs* Roger on vocals.
december 2o21 , and i've always 'relished' Relay , like in Toronto a.o. live performances , ,,, but it's probably more for Roger to belt it out 'into space'
If I could ask the universe for one wish, I would have all the shit music groups of the modern age sacrificed so that Keith Moon and John Entwhistle could be brought back to life and that The Who can be brought back together as one!
- well , there are quite a few 'non-s..t' music-creators/performers around - even today in 2o21 ( mostly the 'Not-SO-Famous' .. ) , but i certainly do fully understand Your feelings here ,,,, with - largely - Pete as the 'writer-upper' The Who , especially with The Ox & The Loon brought us 'Music-Performances' like no other Band could .... Catharsissies Galore !!! ( so glad that i had the chance to know them from down at the Marquee ! ) - still , credits & THANKS to all the other musicians that made The Who , many of them GREATS intheir OWN Right !!!!!
It's interesting how not one of these videos has a thumbs down vote. There is usually some asshole who feels the need to be the one person to vote it down. Then again, these combine to be the skeleton of the who - there is nothing wrong with them.
this song is actually about the Internet, some people knew it was going to happen, Pete predicted what it would be like today

Kinda like the Unabomber. He did predict this and tried to warm us.
Gotta go back to monitoring you.
Well Townshend said that once, but it's an easy thing to say.
My favorite Who song but I really don't like internet . Necessity nowadays.

PT is a genius.
this is awesome!!! i don't compare these demo's to the who versions, i think they stand on their own, like an alternate reality!!!
That's really the heart of Pete's music...teenage angst, forming an identity, becoming a man, figuring out how to take ot make your place in the world
This version is actually better than the studio one
I listened to Tommy, Quadrophenia and Lifehouse at a rather emotional point of my teenage life so it probably had a bigger impact than it would have.

Sorry, Boss Phaser pedal. On the step setting.
Thanks for posting man! I love this version!
I could almost guarantee that every sound you hear in this song is made by Pete..
It is.
thanks for putting this up happy new year
Fantastic! 🙏👍🙏👍🙏
the beginning 4 bars of the guitar w/ the RANDOM LFO is PERFECT SOUNDING!!! (especially the 3rd n 4th bar) ....better than the one on the album.
friggin' awesometicity
Top tune
The tightness never fails to spell-bind me.

You can hear it in the street
See it in the dragging feet
The word is getting out about control
Spies they're come and gone
The story travels on
The only quiet place is inside your soul
From tree to tree
From you to me
Traveling twice as fast as on any freeway
Every single dream
Is wrapped up in the scheme
They all get carried on the relay
Pass it on
Someone disapproves
Of what you say or do
I was asked to see what I could learn you
Don't believe your eyes
They're seeing only lies
What is done in the first place don't concern you
From tree to tree
From you to me
Traveling twice as fast as on any freeway
Every single dream
Is wrapped up in the scheme
They all get carried on the relay
Thank You Mucho-Molto !!!!
Song about the Internet written in 1971.... Townshend truly is a pure genius (and aside from that, one of the best rythm guitarists ever).
@patohdz Supposedly its the Maestro USS-1. They go for $1500-$2500! You can get the sound from a Maestro sample and hold as well.

It is the ARP 2600. Pete's stated it.
First time hearing this, Sept 10, 2018...Wahoooooooo!!!! 😊

Be very careful what you wish for!
Left channel! Wow wow wow wow!
if i would have heard this version i would have hated it. But Daltry can sing. Pete cannot do what Roger does. Relay is a kick ass song.
Well there's no accounting for taste
I prefer the live version he did *COUGH COUGH* but it a great song.
Yeah I'm joking around, I uploaded the 2000 one.
That, and I'm just used to the live one because for some reason I've listened to it more often.
this is about free love, and living as a community so that information (and diseases) can be passed easily.... listen carefully
...diseases? Not seeing that in the lyric (however valid that caution is when the rubber hits the road, so to speak)
Bad. Ass.
Looks how my comments over the years change. The Music Must Change.

There's a device called ring modulator, could have something to do with that
More like sample-and-hold, to my ears... ring mod more about timbres, iirc, in analog-synth-land
My favorite Who song.
can someone tell me where i can get a copy of this album please
www.amazon.de/Pete-Townshend-Music-Lifehouse/dp/B00009AHPA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1520683459&sr=8-2&keywords=pete+townshend+lifehouse
whered yu find these??
now i really don't know what is happening in iran.
couldn't even finish this. I like the original better with Roger singing it.
It was only a demo where Pete did everything. Not meant for a final release by any means
It’s not a competition. They’re both great!
@@davidkieltyka9 true. They are both great. Hope I never have to pick.
@@gd7216 Well maybe you'd be happier if Pete were never born!
This IS the original
