As a “boots on the ground” vendor for 15 years, the people buying *old* books are almost all dealers now. I only sell $1 books to non-vendors. Everything else is to a guy who sells/resells/flips. Do with that what you will.
The advent of online comic shops with hold/ship process has brought comics back into my life as a feature hobby. I now have access to much of whats on your wall non cgc for outstanding value. Most lcs didn't have anything non modern growing up and coventions are proving to be giant rip offs in comparison. I am thinking a new modern golden age is already underway.
Hey, great video as always! I was watching your piece on the highest book sales of the year, and you mentioned that the ToS #39 had the full quotation mark on the cover, which affects its price, much like page quality. I'm curious if you know of any other books that had other criteria, besides grade and page quality, that can influence a book's cost. The only other example I can think of is GSXM #1, where it's important to check if all of Wolverine's claws are visible at the bottom. Are there any others you can think of?
Thanks again as always for answering my questions. In your opinion, what was the greatest year for comics? What do you think will be the next "comic boom"?
Hey Allan. While watching you and other RUclipsrs, I noticed many believe the comic price floor is right before the boom. I believe for most books will hit 2016-17. I’ll explain,1996-2012 comics didn’t move the needle.2012-2019 comics made healthy increases because of the MCU.2019 being the height. In the next few years as MCU popularity wanes, so will many collectors. The boom I think will hurt more than help. My question is why do so many people think prices won’t continue to decrease in the next few years. (Golden age esoteric books not included in this forecast) Sorry question is so long :)
At this point I'm willing to part with all of my raw books, and just keep 2/3 short boxes of slabbed books. The problem is everyone is looking to take your big raw collection for heist/steal prices.
In your special childhood memories unboxing, you showed a MacLeans magazine that featured your first Art website. Could you share a little about that website? What type of art did you sell? Are you an art collector yourself? Thanks!
First off enjoyed the video!!! I have a question. Was Tim Holt involved with helping create Ghost Rider and Redmask since both characters were in his comic?
Thank you for answering my question! Do you know how many speedy Gonzalez books there are in the series? Is it just Dell or did anyone else publish them?
Hello Allan! How often, a day, do you think about comics? Also, have you ever had any "weird" dreams in regard to comics? For example to ba a hero/villain in a stoty? Thanks!
As a manga collector and& Golden/Silver/Bronze Age collector, I feel that the biggest difference is that people who buy manga read them, while the majority of people who collect the older books buy them for the covers and as an investment. I’m not sure if manga collecting is really a gateway to vintage comic collecting, as much as I wish it were because we need new blood in the hobby.
I doubt I will be around when you're 70, I'm nearly 68 now. But I've no intention of selling my collection when I'm 70, I'm still buying books I used to own to refill collections I also had. I wouldn't get a 50th of what your collection is worth anyway, but you've put too much into your collection over the years and will do with all those years to come, so I don't see it happening! I'm leaving mine to some charity or other or a couple of like minded friends, they don't know who they are! All the time I can pick up a small comic box, I will be collecting, lol!
Interesting points on restoration, Allan. IMHO CGC are off in at least a few respects. Trimming is permanently removing part of a book. To my mind that's irreparable damage and not restoration in any form. Then there's colour touch. If someone dots a couple of white spots on the cover with a biro, that will get a grade that's perceived as better than where (for example) someone had drawn breasts on captain America. Sorry , but those ink dots should simply take a hit for ink on cover and be noted.. on a blue label. Because CGC class this as restoration people are permanently disfiguring perfectly serviceable (and beautiful) books by cutting chunks out to remove this colour touch. So we've ended up in a situation where a book with acouple of barely perceptible ink dots on a cover is worth less than if they were blatant holes in the cover. That's crazy.
Hi Allan, I've just bought All Star Comics 40.Do you have any Golden or Silver Age comics with covers highlighting social issues( not counting wartime problems)?
Hi Allan. As DC & Marvel comics sales keep declining, do you think a merger with a manga publishing house may occur & Marvel & DC characters drawn by manga artists to capture the manga market? Ending variant covers, single issue floppies & crossover events on various titles to have a thick volumed manga format? Just a theory I have. What's your opinion? Regards. Troy.
Hey Allen, I know Marston was very much a fetishist, and that explains a lot of Wonder Woman's predicaments, but how much of Golden Age bondage do you think was actually based on the kinks of the creators and how much do you think was just the relatively innocent product of popular notions about the machinations of monsterous miscreants?
Manga are Comics, just loke Graphic Novels are Comics, Just Lke the Funnies and Comic Strips are Comics. It's ridiculous how so many people have to classify them differently just because they are packaged differently.
Manga is different form of "comic book". The standardization of the comic book matters especially when people seek the first appearance or when the make the comparison to other forms of comic "books".
How are these demographics officially being gathered? Are cashiers in shops taking notes of the physical characteristics of their customers? Are online stores assuming things about their customers? 🤔
Good question. Here is the explanation from the source where I found the stats. "At the New York Comic Con Insider Sessions Powered by ICv2, Kristen McLean of NPD BookScan broke out some demographic data, based on a 72,000-person book buying consumer panel, about who is buying graphic novels, what they are buying, and where they are buying them."
I think American comics "died" when they abandoned their perennial audience (i.e. kids). Manga has something for everyone, American comics, not so much.
As a “boots on the ground” vendor for 15 years, the people buying *old* books are almost all dealers now.
I only sell $1 books to non-vendors. Everything else is to a guy who sells/resells/flips.
Do with that what you will.
Nice books as always! Love that Phantom Lady and even more for 14k.
Love these Q&A! So enjoyable to watch!
Thanks Allan! Great questions and great answers 😊
Good data. Thank you for your attention to my question. Some things to research more on. Thank you for your content.
wow thanks for sharing those scod images! good job picking covers. As an artist who repairs comics, i call it RENOVATING and i sign my work.

I’m buying. And reading too

3:05 That's quite a lewd cover for an Archie book.
LuLu has some seasonal covers I remember. I can see a bunch of leaves around the border of the book😂

if you ever want to sell a collection I might buy some of it or know people who can help.
Bought a 12 ft. Skeleton to scare the Halloweener's this year.
how precode horror of you.
Do you think silver and bronze war comics (Our army at war, Joe, rock) are undervalued and are a good opportunity?

My thought is manga is similar enough to comics that there should be an overlap in interests.
So I have saved up a little to buy a bigger book. Would you go for a more modern key issue or a golden age book for the same character?
Hey Allan, have you read Impact Comics 1 The Master Race Story and if so what’s your thoughts about it? Love your videos.

Hi, Allan! Can you tell me who Rick Jones was, what he did as a character for Marvel, and what happened to him? Thank you! Stephen

Who is your favourite Super-Pet and do you have that pet's first appearance

I don't know anyone that collects anything anymore except groceries.
HOLD NEVER SELL

I’m buying comics…. Every week.
The people actually buying expensive "key" comics are middle aged and senior men, once they die off the comics will be worthless.
I think American comics "died" when they abandoned their perennial audience (i.e. kids). Manga has something for everyone, American comics, not so much.
I just bought tales to astonish 27 in a 3.0 for fmv and I’m not even sure why I just wanted it 🫣🤔
