In this video:
When Julius Caesar’s father died suddenly when Caesar was 16, it put him in charge of the family. Around 17 he had also been appointed the High Priest of Jupiter, though was later stripped of this position when Sulla (Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix) became dictator of Rome.
You tell your captors you'll hunt them down and kill them before they let you go and then you do. Now that's how you get a salad named after you.
No, you actually invent a salad recipe that people like. The fact that you're named after another famous person might help its popularity. Yeah, I'm missing the sarcasm.
@@icollectstories5702 lol it's better to be historically accurate than have a good punchline -_- I'll make sure to get Cobb's adventures in the Thousand Islands accurately.
@@mechasentai Wait a few decades and they'll say Caesar was a great lover of dogs, and could even talk to them, too.
That's how you realize those pirates were fools for allowing him to live. Once it was too late for them to let him go where he wouldn't have anything done to them, and where he would instead make their lives utterly horrible, then they should've killed him when they still had the chance.
Caeser: I'm totally gonna crucify you guys when I get home lol
Pirates: LMAO you cray bro.
Some time later: †††
I guess by that point once he said that, they should've taken him seriously and just killed him, so that even if something horrible would happen to them later on whether they let him live or not, at least he would've been dead.
@@Steveman27 They were mere pirates, not professional mercenaries. None of them knew what to do with person with natural charisma score of 20+. Ceasar didnt own any military at the time, and they would of been paid less or nothing if he was returned dead. Ceasar had dined on so much of their best food while a captive using his smooth talking and psychological manipulation, that just killing him and turning chicken would of been a net loss.
Like I said, he had no military at his command at the time. But when he was returned, he used his influence and his silver tongue to convince the local governor to send a small fleet to have them quickly captured.
And to 'thank them' for being such wonderful hosts, after all of them were crucified, he slit their throats as the penultimate power play.
@@9751matt Pirates or mercenaries or whatever else, they should've killed him when they had the chance. They didn't, and they paid the price for it. Regardless of how he acted or what words he spoke, they still should've been able to realize that killing him would've been better than them allowing themselves to be in that horrible situation that they later got into. You act like they had no freewill, no ability to think on their own accord, to kill him when they had the chance. I believe they still had freewill, were still able to think on their own accord, and still could have killed him when they had the chance, and yes, I believe that they should have killed him when they had the chance.
Whether someone would have a tongue made out of flesh, silver, gold, kryptonite, or anything else, that means nothing by the person with that tongue if that person would have you tortured and crucified. Pirates or not, I think they still had a choice to kill him instead of letting him hold them captive and kill them later on. They should have killed him when they had the chance, and they paid dearly when they didn't.
@@Steveman27 "they should've killed him when they had the chance."
First off, don't upvote your own comment so obviously. No one else is in the comment section except the og.
Second, why and how?
Caesar was a statistical anomaly. Literally every surly kidnapping victim gives threats of violence to his captors.
And how? With what brains? Exactly what level of education and intelligence and genre savviness did you think pirates had in the era of FREAKIN CAESAR?! Are you insane?
"They didn't, and they paid the price for it. "
Yeah, they DID. That's my point.
Because of all the billions of people they could of kidnapped in the history of mankind, they kidnapped one of the most silver tongue'd and crafty future rulers in history.
" they still should've been able to realize that killing him would've been better than them allowing themselves to be in that horrible situation that they later got into."
How?
Such a scenario was a statistical nigh-impossibility. He didn't have high political or military connections back then, so it should of been a ransom with no huge repercussions. Caesar himself was not a strong warrior.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Literally every person on earth, both as children and adults, have made stupid decisions that seemed dumb in hindsight. And even then....
The successful capture of Caesar, was on the surface a low risk job.
His family had wealth but no extreme military or political connections He was the perfect mark....but only on the surface. They had no idea who he would grow up to become. No one did at the time.
And, by definition, piracy is a high risk job.
Did you suddenly forget they are PIRATES?
By your ridiculous standards, the pirates should of quit being pirates the second they met Caesar, sailed to a far off country to become traders....without any knowledge of what the future held.
"You act like they had no freewill, no ability to think on their own accord"
One, completely incorrect, but I'll get to that in (three)
Two, conversely, you act as if they should of had PERFECT foresight, education, and genre-savviness, which they did not.
Three, them having free will was true, but was NEGLIGIBLE around Caesar. The were low will, low intelligence, low charisma pirates, and Caesar had off the charts charisma and will. Cult leaders and even modern politicians take advantage of the same thing, psychologically manipulating the LCD.
The fact that you ignore the LCD exists, means you ARE an easy mark.
"and still could have killed him when they had the chance"
On what grounds? Did they have a perfect crystal ball telling him this rich kid/young adult was miraculously be able to rally enough ships to capture them easily? t was statistically impossible. PROBLEM was, Ceasar was no ordinary man, and in D&D terms, constantly rolled 20s in intelligence and charimsa to perform a statistical near-impossibility.
" yes, I believe that they should have killed him when they had the chance."
Of course they should have. But without knowing who Caesar was going to grow up to be, what would be their reason for doing so? They are pirates, who often do high risk jobs. Caesar, on the surface, was a low risk job.
'Maybe we should never try to do anything ambitious for fear of risking angering a normal man in the one in a million chance he was a one in a million vengeful super genius.' Are you starting to understand how insane your logic sounds?
"Whether someone would have a tongue made out of flesh, silver, gold, kryptonite, or anything else, that means nothing by the person with that tongue if that person would have you tortured and crucified."
I honestly can't tell if your either completely oblivious to what it means to have a silver tongue, or you do but just are too angry your argument is falling apart. that you don't care.
Every surly kidnapping victim has threatened bodily harm on their captors. But that doesn't mean they are capable of it.
" letting him hold them captive and kill them later on."
He was one civilian surrounded by pirates in a very lawless age!! He never told the pirates that he was a one in a million genius who could make such an empty promise a reality. The idea he could rally an entire fleet to capture them the second he got home was so against the odds it would never have come across anyone's mind! He pulled off a nigh miracle with constant perfect charisma and intelligence to get them captured!
**Look at me I'm the captain now** pirates start sweating...
Yup Caesar was not one to leave his back ungarded... Mhm...
@@mechasentai I'm not captive here by you - YOU'RE CAPTIVE HERE BY ME!
“Take me to Gaul, I have plans” 😂
...once again i ask HOW IS THIS NOT A MOVIE!?
We can't worship powerful males in film anymore
It's NOT believable. Sorry.
It has to be a comic book first.
Maybe because the actors that would be playing the pirates would look way too foolish for us to take the movie seriously. He warned them about what would happen, yet they still didn't take him seriously or kill him when they had the chance.
Dude was gansta af lmao
ikr? Cool as a cucumber all the while planning his payback. He probably had a smile on his face when he told them he would kill them all when he was released so they probably thought he was joking. At least they were rather nice to him so they earned a quick death.
@siddharth brother go to sleep
Imagine the balls it takes to tell your pirate captors that you're going to come back and crucify them all if they release you...and then you do.
Well you don't get a salad named after you for being anything less.

That dude Caesar is overpowered them pirates just of his sheer will power, He got that Haoshoku Haki
It is him the one and only
Is reverse-Stockholm Syndrome a thing?
It was. Once. In this case.
This debacle is hands down my favorite story from his life. Which leads me to ask, why has this particular event not been made into a movie, or short series? It sets up for everything to come, and it is one hell of a great segment of his life, perfect for a self contained story
It could also work for as an opening arc in a show about him. It would serve to introduce him as a character and all his strengths and weaknesses
I've been waiting for someone to suggest this!
Also I would absolutely watch/read/listen [to] that show/story/program! And I think most would enjoy it also.
Maybe because the actors that would be playing the pirates would look way too foolish for us to take the movie seriously. He warned them about what would happen, yet they still didn't take him seriously or kill him when they had the chance.
I’ve thought the same about mad jack Churchill.
It wasn’t really legal for Caesar get the trope to hunt the pirates but it’s not as if legality of what you could do with troops ever stopped Caesar.
Those where the days always on the run crucifying Pirates falling in love in Egypt exploring Britain and not have 23 knives in my body

“High priest of Jupiter “ , now that’s a title!
Julius Caesar was such a boss.
The pirates pranked Caesar by kidnapping him.
Caesar pranked the pirates by having them crucified.
HEY SIMON!!!!Im curious about the history of the "handshake".
Nathan Hardee It was common among knigths during medival times. Open hand was a gesture which meant: " I am unarmed" Public picked it up and it became a stantard.

This and that Rhine bridge are my favorite Ceasar anecdotes. So metal.
I remember this mission in Age of Empires rise of Rome
Don't all great stories involve pirates!
JuJu’s Bizarre Adventure...
Pirates: so, what are you going to do when you're free?
Julius Caesar (in complete seriousness): I'm going to gather together a fleet and kill you all
Pirates: 🤣ok, bud, whatever you say
*Some time later
Pirate(looking through a telescope): uh, captain, you remember that guy that said he would kill us all when he was free?
Captain: yeah
Pirate: you might want to take a look at this
Captain (looking through the telescope at Caesar): ah, fuck.
I've always loved this story, I remember reading it in an Asterix book
Julius Caesar Pirate Baird O'Connell 😛
Almost all of it
Simon pronounces Cisalpine Gaul the same way I do. Have I been saying it wrong all this time?
I hope you know how much of a small yet significant impact in thousands of peoples of lives. I have very little sources for interesting information so videos like these just spice up my (usually boring) day. Doubt comments get read but Cheers mate! 😀
This is one to study Cesar would assert with seemingly few legions backing him. BUT I have read where the Pirates maybe-kind of-felt sorry for the guy. AS you say Cesar acted like the leader BUT here was a young 25-year-old kind of wacky guy. He made them keep quiet when he slept, and he wrote poems and stories reading them to the Pirates as well. They were not afraid, even worse just thought this young man had way to high opinion of himself. I wonder if he warned them NOT to remain on that island for too long after letting him go. Yep, there is a reason ALL chairman, czar, champion and on on comes from him.
Hello Simon!! Love your videos. 💕
I can see the movie for this story being directed by (and probably starring) Taika Watiti. I can't decide whether or not that's a good thing.
You should do a video about the weird coincidences between the assassinations of Lincoln and Kennedy.
Both assassinated
Both succeeded by VPs called Johnson
Both assassinated by southerners
Both had children die while president.
Both educated at Harvard
Lincoln was assassinated in a theatre and his killer was arrested in a warehouse, Kennedy was assassinated from a warehouse and his assassin was arrested in a theatre.
Also something about the fact John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th 1826, 50 years to the day from the birth of America that they were both responsible for.
This video made me think of DS9; in that show, all "Runabout shuttles" were named after famous rivers on Earth (as in Ganges or Rio Grande) but a famous runabout was called Rubicon which I had thought violated the naming convention. So with this video, it was finally proved to me that the Rubicon shuttle did indeed fit the established naming scheme for DS9's shuttles. Like if you also caught the Star Trek connection to the name "Rubicon".
Was searching for this and when I saw my favorite RUclips influencer I picked this video first.
And don't all good stories have pirates?
Eh, the Rubicon was little more than a stream. A film crew back then captured the crossing: ruclips.net/video/g4oCYrOgZJk/видео.html
The more a prisoner was worth to the pirates, the better they would treat him, and since Caesar intended to take the money back anyway, it didn't matter how much he had them ask for.
Could you do a video on the Defenestrations of Prague? Like why throwing rulers out of windows is called defenestration? And what sparked it happening three times in Prague?
Just a quick reply to your middle question.
Defenestration come from the french "fenêtre" (old writing "fenestre") for "window".
So defenestration is just "dewindowing", and it's not reserved to rulers.
Simon. I’ve been wondering, could you get away with crime if you say it was religious freedom? Like polygamy?
He was defeted and kidnaped by king vikramaditya Lol it's for real 😂😂😂. Nice propaganda westerns😂😂😂
Average brainwashed pajeet
I always thought this happened to Ceasar when he was The Ruler of Rome not when he was simply a rich man
Well this story is myth
Can you answer a question for me, please? What are the symptoms, treatment, and history of misophonia? I've heard a little bit about it, but I'm interested in finding out more. I'd like more information on this irrational irritation caused by somebody chewing, drinking, or making other repetitive noises.

I don't know if this is where one puts questions, but I've been wondering how and why did the mythical Cupid go from being a man old enough to have a lover as in "Cupid and Psyche" to a weird chubby baby looking thing?
50 talent of silver is more than 1.6 tons. That must have been a large undertaking just to deliver it. It makes me want to know more about how much income people of different classes of that time had and how they spent it. How much of it went to taxes/housing/food/entertainment.

Caesar was quite the playboy.
amazing.
The phrase "pirate adventure" just sent me
Have you done a video on aimo koivunen?
just thought I would add the "Caesar" is actually pronounced with a hard "k" sound. not an "s" sound. so its more like "Kaisar"
You’re correct but no one says it like this. Deal with it.
Caesar's name is so prolific it has been translated into several languages...you gave a German sounding example even if it is close to the the original. There's the Russian Tsar which sounds like Zar...and English Caesar...which sounds like Seiz-ur...or the Spanish Caesar which sounds like Say-sar.
This would make a good movie
You said someone named Sula resigned as dictator? Has that ever happened since then?
No. The next one was Caesar and after that the Roman republic ceased to be. Worth noting that the Office of Dictator was an official position within the Roman republic. Sulla and Caesar were a bit on the self-appointed side and their appointment didn't carry the usual 6 month time limit. It had been used a number of times before without incident however by the time of Sulla and Caesar the institutions of the Roman Republic had been very much degraded.
Edit: If you're interested Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast is great.

And many years later people with equal intelligence to the pirates voted for obama and clinton......................................
Once it was too late for them to let him go where he wouldn't have anything happen to them, they should've killed him when they still had the chance. What would you have done if you would have been one of those pirates, and it got to the point where it was too late for you to have nothing happen to you after you would have kidnapped him?
