I made the recipe yesterday! It was very easy and super tasty! My boyfriend is currently playing Pokemon Legends Arceus, so he was excited to enjoy this dish in real life too!
I used half tapioca starch and half mochiko (mochi flour?), because potato starch isn't easy to find where i live, but turned out great.

Additionally, the character who makes them says he uses an ingredient called Sootfoot root in his recipe. After searching, I believe it’s real world counterpart is Japanese Wild Yam. Can probably add half of one to the recipe!

I also believe that he grills them.

@@EastMeetsKitchen I did this with a big Russet per your recipe and it was fantastic! Then I thought about the sweet potato that had been keeping the Russet company and I gave that a go. I was out of potato starch so I used tapioca/cassava instead and I added a half teaspoon of cinnamon. I used the same glaze and it was really fantastic :)

SO much ASMR goodness in this video: mixing the dough together, frying the mochi, simmering the mochi in the sauce......... LOL!
These look terrific, and actually pretty do-able. Thanks! It's on my list for the next time I grab potatoes at my local farmers market.

Me and boyfriend are playing Arceus. I beat the main story first so I might try to make this to motivate him. Although he's super motivated over I did him Darkrai.

I think what I'm going to do is, instead of mixing the potato peel into the potato mash, I'll hold them aside to substitute the seaweed wrapper! I love the taste of potatoe peel and I think that would be quite yummy tasting!

Also from a quick glance it seems this is a common snack in Hokkaido? If so that's super neat, especially since the Hisui/Sinnoh region is based heavily on hokkaido

Thank you for sharing this recipe, I had no idea it was a thing 😅
I think it could help if you dipped your hands in water before forming the dough balls… it works with rice flour balls.

Is there any noticeable difference between potato starch and corn starch? I have corn but I have an astute palette and can be a purist so if there’s any noticeable difference then I’d rather use the proper starch.
Also, would low sodium soy sauce ruin the flavor too? Because that’s all I have as well.

What oil are you frying them in at first? I’m making them right now and realized you never specified. I was thinking of using sesame oil but maybe it’s not meant for frying with so maybe I should use vegetable oil.

Something kinda odd happened when I made these - set and forgot the potatoes to steam/cook in my instant pot and it was late at night and I was to tired to mash them so left it till morning - then in the morning I realised the potatoes were kinda firm with the skin on and it would be difficult to mash them when cold.
So I put them in a food processor to mash them and they got a really stretchy/mochi like texture just blended in the food processor, it was really sticky/stretchy and unlike normal mashed potato, didn't know they could do that. Anyhow the mochi potato cakes are super mochi like and chewy, accidental happy accident I guess lol, though they deflated quite a bit when I took them out of the frying pan and were kinda odd shaped because the potato was so sticky and stretchy, difficult to work with. Wonder what caused it, may look that up.
