The moments Rich knowingly looks at the camera as he grapples with his ego while speaking of the nourishment that community and connection bring. Then Tom speaking of relinquishing the power we give to the ego by turning it over to trust in the forces of the universe. This is one of the hardest lessons for those of us who develop a severe martyr complex that has us "shouldering" (as Tom mentions) the weight of the world, thinking it is our duty to try and save it from as much suffering and injustice as possible. Once I finally realized that this seemingly selfless quest was indeed quite self-righteous, I was able to accept the world as it is so I could finally live well in it. Sending love to those on a similar journey...

Ok, so I'm sitting here, listening to this podcast and eating my breakfast and feeling so inspired. We come to the end, Rich asks Tom "And... Who are you?" and Tom paraphrases a quote from a poem by Hafiz : "I am the hole in the flute that the Divine breathes through...". And I start to cry, mid chew.

Rich, I love Tom's insight into YOU and your gift.
You have an eloquence with words, because you listen.
You have a way of summarizing and putting perspective on things, because you care.
You show up at all in this capacity at this time because you love.
None of those things require anything from your mind but that it is used as the tool it is for the expression of love and understanding and connection that truly moves you.
Once you feel this within consistently, prior to thought . . . you are permanently home.

Hey Tom. Love all of this, Right there with you in my practice and experiences. Just had this inspiration and maybe you read it. I like the break down of Intention. And from your idea, I'm inspired that we IN - Tend. And tending is the efforts of weeding, or planting, or watering, giving what is needed. Fertilizing. Tending.
It may or may not be uncomfortable, but it does demand something of you. Some care from you. And the observation to change when the tending you're doing is misguided as seen by its results, internally and/or externally.. The growth or not. The goodness or not. The ability to change direction, requires eyes to be open.

I loved so much of this conversation, his word play was profound, and at the same time so obvious and easy. The thing that hit me most viscerally was what attributed to Father Gregory Boyle, that he doesn't care what happens. It's something I say at times, mostly inwardly because I think it will be misunderstood as callous, or cavalier, that I always have to follow up with a qualifier, even when I'm saying it to myself. I'm not saying I don't care as in "it doesn't matter". It's more of it's not on me, so I don't have to feel personally responsible, I just have to be an active participant with and to life. What happens, or doesn't happen isn't for me to "care". Did I fully and completely participate in all that was within my capability? If the answer is yes, I did all that was required.

    • @yagspill

Beautiful conversation. I’m thinking about how challenging it might be for Rich to “be in the river,” as Tom puts it, when amazing people come and go from his life every week (in the form of show guests). I’m sure there is consistency and closeness in his life as he’s spoken about it many times before, but what he’s doing must sometimes feel so intangible and hard to hold on to…whereas for us listeners it’s very tangible. But maybe that IS the spirituality, to Rich it might feel like “head work” but to us, listening to the show over the years is its own spiritual journey.

As usual, two smart guys talking. It's wonderful. I love listening to your conversation. This is so interesting and alive and honest. Thank you. Rich, regarding your eloquence: it's art. Your love of words is a beautiful thing, like music. It doesn't make you better, it makes you necessary, and a joy, and a connector, and a contributor to this world. Sometimes these things feel like armor or artifice, but sometimes it's the purest energy inspiring your brain to select words and punctuation and inflection to make this wonderful, meaningful word music. Tom too. It's what makes this podcast worth returning to again and again. My appreciation of you doesn't make me less than you, and you know that.

Rich, you should not be too frustrated with using your head too much. According to the ancient science of Ayurveda out of India, your body constitution is heavy on the Pitta dosha - strong focused people with high energy, susceptible to addiction and a strong intellect. Your strong intellect is one of yours. If you can continue to balance that with your heart you will be in a great place.
