Knight rider here…and for my light choice I ride Exposure lights. My group and I all ride with Exposure lights. Through our many years of field trials for quality and longevity they can’t be beat! 1500 handlebar, 1000 helmet. A bit pricey compared to the video models but they are worth it. Machines aluminum self contained case with super bright options.

I never really "got it" when it comes to helmet mount lights. I think I understand why people like it, but for me it doesn't work. Handlebar mount makes more sense to myself, my riding, my vision, etc., and I love night riding.
I use a powerful NiteRider Dual 1800 Boost for my handlebar mount on my Stumpy off-road and that thing is SICK! You basically have a motorcycle headlight when you handlebar mount this thing. I also have the NiteRider 1200 OLED which I mostly use THAT one for paved paths, city riding, street riding, and it's amazing. I don't need as wide of a panoramic lighting when not off-road so the OLED 1200 works fine. Either light can be clipped to the bars with the same clip, so I just put one of those NiteRider clips on every bike and can use whichever light I want when riding. The 1200 is better in the city too because I just look down a t the screen to make sure I'm setting it to the right strobe or steady when I need to change the mode. The 1800 tesla death-ray is really only being used for off-road so I don't need to change the modes on that. I've been out in the woods where it's completely pitch black and had NO problem at all only running the Dual 1800 on medium!!
I guess if you're riding some seriously techy DH or something at night you'd also want a helmet light I guess, but I never had any issues with only a handlebar light. These are great lights they've demonstrated in the vid here. I'm even going to take a closer look at the Light & Motion Trail one too. I really wish you would've included the Dual 1800 Boost. Hardcore night riders will look no further after the FIRST ride with that nuclear powered monster. Only issue though is that the Dual 1800 needs a proprietary adapted is comes with instead of being able to USB charge it. That's the only thing I'd change on that light.

I ride daily, cutting through a park or some single track at night is awesome. I run 2 Bontrager Ion Pro RT. Lenght of day on bike can wear 1 blinky blink out, & with 2, i got 1 for the first 15 feet & the 2nd up reaching out at night. With 3 different brightness levels, I am good off road and on. Also had 2 of them go bad, no grief or issues, just an apology & handed a new one.
    Highly recommend.

Thanks for the review. I really liked the portion where you demonstrated all the lights on the same trail.
All the built in lights have relatively short max runtimes. It's 2021 and a lot of lights still have wired external batteries which IMHO is more versatile. You can get a bigger pack for longer run times, multiple packs, or even get a waterproof battery box (4 to 6 batteries) and get high capacity Korean or Japanese 18650 and you have great runtimes with very little limitation (thermal limits?). My Brighteyes Stamina ($80) does have stamina at 1800 lumens and runs for more than 4 HOURS on max with the included 10,000mah pack. I don't think any of the wired lights can even approach this kind of stamina! For all in one lights - same thing. I prefer the ones that have user replaceable 18650 batts and just carry a bunch with me. I have a Tansoren 1200 ($30) watts for that.

I ran a 2,200 lumens handlebar light then a 1,500 lum helmet ones. I usually ran my hb light lower than max about 1,800 lum to lessen the transition from my helmet light. It's amazing how the trails you ride frequently look different at night..
Bdw, warm white or neutral white light temp were the better ones because you could differentiate the features on a trail and they're also the best light when it's fogging or raining..

  • @denesk2794
    @denesk2794 4 года назад +19

It would have been useful to see the mount options. You can get a really strong LED on every corner (or online shop), but my problem with bike lights were always the mounts. 35mm bars, wobbly mounts that scratch up your carbon bars. Wonky helmet mounts that wobble.
So the mount for me is more of an issue. The other is battery life on X settings.

the thing that worries me about using red lights for visibility out on the trail is, there are mountain lions on my trails. I'd be worried that if they see that little red light moving along the trail, they might respond the same way my housecats do to a laser pointer.

Mountain lions are not pets. So no they will not react to it like a house cat that plays with a Laser pointer light. Creature that hunt in the dark don't tend to like Lights in general. So if your riding they'll likely verr away from it's source.

Good info. Went out last night to try the NR850, helmet mounted. Works much better than the NR1100, handlebar mounted. Unfortunately I forgot the bar mount for the 1100 and just went out with the NR850. I tried to conserve battery power as I didn't know what the life would be. I'd say I ran 75% high and 25% low. At the 70 minute mark battery died. Okay didn't die but it defaults to 60 lumen which isn't much. Had to ride the last two miles a little faster than walking speed. I thought when the battery got low it would default to the low setting like the 1100 does. That sucks.

When riding with just one light it is best to use it in the bar, rather than helmet (except if really tight turns) because the beam from your helmet doesn't reflect any shadow of obstacles, making the track look much flatter than it is.

I really appreciate this video about lights.
I have limited experience on trails with lights, but our son and his 9yr old daughter ride crazy trails at night looking for critters!!! I am planning more night trail riding.
I always have a light on when riding. The short day commute to work entails two helmet lights, flashing white in front and flashing red in back, and sometime in heavy traffic I have 2 extra side lights mounted on the back of the bike as well.
At night I have the two helmet lights with the white light bright and the red light flashing. On the bar I have a small flashing white light and a matching flashing red one behind. For seeing I have another bright light on the handlebars, and like you shared, the two lights light up right in front of me, while the helmet lights up whatever I look at. I blinded a couple necking the other night as I sped by their parked car!!! LOL
About Amazon Lights. I have Prime and ordered a bunch of light, some great and some junk, with some dying off quickly and varying accuracy in labeling. I sent back the junk, and kept the really good ones, and bought more of the good ones for my other bikes and family. I make a point of spending $20 or less for 2 light kits and have used the good ones daily for over a year!
Sorry, but I pay about 1/3 what my local bike shop charges for the white light alone.
Also, I am a SCUBA diver, and I only buy expensive tested name brands. But for biking, I am willing to experiment more with the cheapies. :)

Consensus I've seen says you want the brighter light on your bars. In the NiteRider 1200 part, of the blog they mention that a combo they like is 850 on the helmet and 1200 on the bars.

I enjoy lights at night, takes some getting used to, intensity of the lights changes the experience dramatically, not too much or too little, depends on speed and trail, helmet and HBar light should be around the same intensity, or too distracting, lights mounted on the top of the helmet are a clothesline hazard, (explitive) and its difficult to find lights that will work on the front of the helmet, you all know that the mount is very important, its the vents on the helmet that make a big difference, form factor of lights is too long in most cases, remotes needed to dim the light when looking towards other riders and autos, that's all....
