This was a fantastic video for people like us, who have a lot of logs, but need to rent a splitter- and never have used one before. Thank you! This actually put a lot of my fears (I know someone who lost three fingers in a log splitter so I've been leary) to rest.

This was very timely. I've never used a log splitter before and I just had two huge trees taken down in my yard. I need to rent a splitter and this helped a lot. I only wish you had some huge trunk sized logs you had to break down with it in vertical mode. I have some big logs, ~3'-4' dia I'll have to try to split with this. I'm wondering if that blade will be able to crack it or if I'll get it stuck.

Thanks, I just got some rounds from felled trees from a storm up the road. This helps - going to get more out back and then rent one of these - I don't come across felled trees to often, then again who knows - this looks like fun. 1st timer here

We have a lot of wood to split. Our old tree that kept falling during high winds finally got cut down. Now the fun begins with the spliting. I think we will rent one just trying to make it easier for my old man to be able to do it.
The log splitter is a time saver as well as a back saver.

Mine's a little newer, has the log cradles on the sides with 25ton cylinder. Great machine, very happy with it over 10 years now. I cover it and oil the track, take good care of it. The only problem I've had is carburetor corrosion due to our crummy fuel, same as any lawn mower.
i need a cradle for mine, maybe one day i will build them
@@Robinson-Homestead there are 4 brackets welded onto the i-beam were the cradles mount, I can photograph mine if you want to see it. Pretty sure this is shown in the parts list too. If you want info, let me know. The cradle is a nice feature. I haven't needed to rebuild my cylinder or valve yet, the cylinder has a clip ring on the ram end to remove the cylinder packing gland.
Very good, informative and to the point.
One point, you know there had to be a nit-picker, I'd reccomend hearing protection. Lost some hearing doing a lot of work around small engines. It sucks asking people to repeat themselves or say, "what?"

I’ve split by hand for years. Now I have 6 trees I need to process. After watching this looking to rent a splitter now.
I don’t know why, but I’ve always used my splitter in the upright position. Looks like horizontal is the way to go, especially for the small to medium stuff. Thanks for posting.

Lucky. When I was a kid my pops would go down the hill and cut the wood then I'd haul it up and between a hammer and a 5lb wedge we'd split it up and burn all winter. I'm 43 now and my back still hurts thinking about it.Come to think of it, they switched to baseboard heat when I moved out. He's 84 now and too old to haul up the ravine. They do keep some wood around incase of power outage though.
Hi Kevin - Seems like you really know what you're doing. Question--Do I split dead elm from the bottom end (trunk) side or from the top in order to prevent a stringy mess. i.e. Should the knife of the splitter hit the top or bottom of the log? Thnx. Brian.

Interesting to see the speed with the original engine. Mine was a flat head Briggs and Stratton.
And horizontal, early 80s model.

Over a replacement that is OHV that spins at 3,600~ not 3,100~

Very helpful! We had a friend cut a tree down for us and left it in large rounds. Neither my husband or I could ever split them manually so considering renting one. Your demo made it seem doable. What do you think

I have the same splitter. I'm in the process of converting it to electric start using and old riding mower engine and wiring. Getting lazy in my old age

Good day Kevin! I was curious how much wood from the load you had in the trailer would equal out to? Would that been equivalent to a quarter cord or half of cord? Thanks in advance for the reply.👍
I would say little more than a quarter of a cord. Thanks for the comment BIGTEX.
I have not seen a single video on RUclips, dealing with wood-splitters and feeding them with wood which is notoriously difficult to split by hand. 'Nice' (untwisted fibres) wooden pieces are routinely used in the demonstrations, blocks which can (in principle) be split using my FISKARS maul (though it takes its time). Before I doff my hat to anyone, I want to see the application of any techniques to scots-pine blocks, say, at least 60cm long and 50cm in diameter, knotty, and twisted.

I just gone and built me a splitter that's that darn powerful that, if you don't read the grain right and you stick it in the splitter wrong, then... well, poor log!

Must be in coal country. That's where that yellow "plastic tarp" came from. It's actually brattice used in coal mines.

I hate a noisy gasoline engine! Log splitters and Chainsaws. You can hear them for miles away. YOUR STAND RITE AT IT! GOING DEAF. If i was going to get one? It would be with a electric motor. Some time i need a log splitter, cause of the weather? Make me push harder! I don't have the time to WRESTLE with the Gnarly stuff > Plus some times that all i got to work with. Study the log, where the weakest spot are? That where i use my maul, once i get it busted. I use my axe >> For me that the hardest thing about log splitting. IS? The Gnarly stuff. it does wears me out Wrestling them around side to side > I GET MY BLOOD PUMPING AND GO TO TOWN ON IT > Take a break go right back to town on it > LIKE A BOXER> 12 rounds and i'am done
