  • In this video, I make a Steel Sheet Bend Knot by Bending 1/2 inch Rebar, without using heat. I made this sheet bend knot because of a suggestion in a comment, I also did it for fun, I love the twisted rebar art type things that sometimes make people stop and think about how it was done.
    I used 1/2 inch rebar to make this steel knot. I do not have a use for the finished sheet bend knot, but it will fit nicely into an industrial-style project at some stage in the future.
    The knot is called a Sheet Bend knot. It probably has other names too.
    I love the look of industrial-style furniture and rebar with knots fits right in with the look I like.
    The main tools used were a Hammer, a bit of pipe, and a bench vise.
    Tools / Supplies, I often use are.

    Note: When you bend metal/rebar, you naturally weaken it. Bending it cold will normally cause fine cracks, and it may even break if you put enough strain on the rebar or bend it in the same place too many times. Do not rely on cold-bent steel/rebar to support a load.

    Why am I watching this?
    Why did I spend an hour or so watching Gavin Clark yesterday?....and the day before when I first came across his channel?
    His enthusiasm for starters....his videos seem to run at double speed.
    He seems to get an adrenaline rush as the project develops and he wants accelerate coming out of the back strait and get it done.
    Damn it , I swear my heart rate went up as well - and I am sitting in an easy chair with one of Germany's finest beers and I haven't seen a Playboy mag for thirty years at least.
    HIs pieces are just so original - the video thumbnail on the Industrial Style Shelf Bracket had me intrigued enough to drop my intended search.
    He has worldwide interest in his work - and reading the comments/compliments the most frequent word used is original.
    A large proportion seem to be from experienced people in the steel industry.
    Me? The closest I get to working with steel is an aluminium knife and fork set.
    I subscribed

      WOW JL D, you have just made my day, what a lovely comment thank you so much, I am very happy you like my videos and the way they are edited, I do try to speed them up as much as I can so they don't become a movie-length video, I appreciate your comment, thank you very much and welcome to the channel. I have another one uploading now, so that will give your heart another workout. Gavin

    Brilliant. As a nautical guy In my younger days I like folk who know their knots and I particularly like RUclips creators who actually read comments and not just 'heart' or 'like' every comment. Your vid's give us everything we need and have no time wasting filler. I hope your channel goes from strength to strength. Regards from Scotland.

      Thank you very much, I also like when I comment on someone's video that I get a reply, and that is why I try to do just that myself, it does get a bit hard sometimes when I get hundreds of comments in a day, but so far I am doing ok with answering them. Interestingly, I have got to know the regular commenters on my videos, I have a great bunch of people following me, I am very lucky. I enjoy the whole process. Greetings from Australia and thank you for your comment.

    Your attention to getting it right is worth a hundred "er good enough" attitudes! I sadly admit that at first I was thinking, "Hurry up. Fast forward it." But it's actually inspiring. Regardless of the very occasional fluke most awe inspiring works take a lot of time and effort. So kudos to you.

    For a split second I thought you were going to take a bow. And it would not have been out of place. You set yourself a pretty knotty problem and accomplished the task. That might have deserved a bow. I think.

    Luckely, not every rebar-worker has to do this knot every time to extend his rebar 😀. It would be a great example on how to tie a knot for young boyscouts. Nice work every time 👍.

      This knot was suggested for me to try to make in a comment, and I have purely made the knot for fun and that is all, I am sure it will be used in one of my future industrial style fittings, but at this stage, it will hang on the wall until I find a suitable use for it.

    I beg to differ Sir...
    At the 3:00 minute mark you said the safety thing and that you were not a good role model for this.
    Actually in my opinion you are the perfect role model.
    A man that understands his tools and his abilities and limits with them. Then says to himself... I can do more.
    Applies his creative side to it his tools and new abilities appear and sets new limits.
    All while understanding the tool cannot hurt you if you listen to it and feel what it is doing.
    You...are a role model this world should see more of.
    Because you make great things and still have all your fingers and eyes :))
    Thank you.

      Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment and do mostly agree with you, I am this way because I have had many years on the tools ( I have had my share of injuries, but as you say I am not missing any bits of me, and I love what I do). Many people are just starting out, I would love them to watch and practice some very safe ways to operate powertools before they start cutting corners on safety, at least then they know they are cutting corners on safety. Thank you so much for your comment. If you don't mind a bit of blood here is a video of splinter I got in my finger, all part of the fun of making stuff, it healed up fast and all is good. ruclips.net/video/b-QPEqoLRsM/видео.html

      Thank you very much. I have put hondo knot on my list, I see it is also called a Honda knot, Looks like a tough one to do without heat, It's on the list. Thank you for your suggestion.

    • @Experiment-yk5mf
      @Experiment-yk5mf 2 года назад

      @@GavinClarkdiy Yep same thing just depends on where you grew up in the US as to how we say it over here. Awesome , I’ve done it with heat but can’t really get it tight as I’d like. I’ve tied many of those for what we call piggin strings to tie up calves when doctoring them and on an occasional lariat when the head needed to be replaced . Now they just buy a new rope or lariat. Looking forward to many more of your videos.

    • @GavinClarkdiy
      @GavinClarkdiy  2 года назад

      @@Experiment-yk5mf Thank's for the info, yes I agree it is hard to get a tight looking knot with rebar, the bumps are never in the right spot to just clip in just right, and look great. You were just making one to hang on the wall, weren't you?

    • @Experiment-yk5mf
      @Experiment-yk5mf 2 года назад

      @@GavinClarkdiy it was a combo of a knot on one end and a loop to look like a lariat for a hat rack. For the loop I upset one end and got some mass then drifted it out to slightly larger and then threaded the rebar back through itself, so technically not a Honda knot on that on the one I did do, well didn’t look like a knot even though I went through the motions 😁. The ridges are definitely hard to get around.

      I agree you are right, it makes it a much easier job at the end. I do generally just wire brush most of my projects as they will be rust treated and then some clear coats which gives a nice old color to the steel. Thank you for your comment.
