  • Someone in England sent my friend Gregg a bottle of Bovril to try. His friend (at least we think she's a friend; after this we weren't too sure) asked him to record his first taste of this popular British drink. Naturally, he called me to suffer...I mean try it with him. May this video serve as evidence should the coroner require it. Clearly, this video is not sponsored.

Bovril is for the lovers of the finer things in life. Bovril cannot be enjoyed by any mere man. It must be imbibed by men of steel and iron and honour. Men with bushels of chest hair so massive that the fabric of space and time could be perceived in its intertwined glory. Bread is served with Lurpak butter for dipping into the brown nectar on special occasions or to quench hunger from a long day and nights hunt. Fruitful your life will not be unlest thou enjoyeth the punch of the cow.

I think you have to 'understand' it.
If you were sitting in a trench in WW1, in winter, and somebody gave you a mug of 'beef tea', aka Bovril, you would probably want to bear his children. It is basically beef stock, and thus appreciated by soldiers in fetid conditions with limited supplies.
It held onto its 'beef tea' reputation for another 60 years but fell out of favor. HOWEVER, if you consider it to be a source of umami, or as a stock source for cooking, it comes into its own in the 21st century.
Personally, I loved it as a kid spread thinly in a sandwich with lots of butter (just like Marmite). It's important to understand that it should be spread really thinly as it is quite concentrated. The best way is on a toasted crumpet or muffin with lots and lots of butter and a smidge of bovril (or marmite*).
    * Americans always spoon Marmite on way too thick (like peanut butter) and then can't work out why it is disgusting - try to get it to a few microns thick and then you'll understand.

@@JCInversoI know this is an old comment. But I’ve just been watching old Bovril commercials and your video showed up.
If you appreciate the historical perspective. Bovril was created in the 1870’s under orders from Napoleon. Who wanted small that could supplement soldiers rations and provide the with nutrition and protein.
It became a vital part of a British soldiers ration. It was also used for expeditions and by athletes.
A rival company called Oxo was one of the first sponsors of the Olympics. It was handed out to marathon runners in the 1908 Winter Olympics.
It was very culturally significant in Britain. It was an extremely popular drink for football matches during the winter, to keep spectators warm.
It was advertised by famous mountaineers who drank in while climbing snow covered mountains.
It was also advertised by a woman who was a long distance swimmer. Who became famous for swimming from England to France. Which is 21 miles through a cold sea. She used for to replenish salt, give her protein, and to warm up.

    • @JarlGrimmToys
      @JarlGrimmToys Год назад

@@JCInversoI do think it’s an acquired taste and it’s definitely fallen out of popularity.
I personally think it’s delicious. But I grew up with it. It’s what we drank as kids when we had been out in the cold for too long. Nothing like a hot bovril or oxo drink to warm you up.
We also used to drink it when we had a cold or the flu. Especially when you didn’t feel like eating. But still needed fluids and protein.
My kids think it’s disgusting and won’t even try it. My wife never used to drink it but uses it a lot in cooking.
But for the people who like it, it’s a wonderful comforting drink.
Also a great hangover cure. Because alcohol lowers the sodium content in your blood. It helps replenish it.

I'm an American in the UK for ten years now. Five in Scotland and five in England. Although I never tried Bovril, it's been on my watch list for a long time, I really wanna get into it, because I love beef and it sounds very good. Your actual descriptions are exactly what I expect and would like, such as "a cup of bouillon". Can't wait to try, I like strong tasting stuff.
My favorite food/drink things from the UK, or that I only experienced here so far include Marmite, haggis, cranachan, Branston pickle, Worcestershire sauce, Old Speckled Hen, rollmops, extra mature cheddar, Bramley apple pie, mince pie, trifle, malt loaf, Supermalt, sticky toffee pudding, and the list goes on, surely I forgot a lot of things. There's a lot of good stuff in here.
One of the few things I don't like here is my favorite food of all time, bacon. It's a completely different cut (back bacon). Luckily, the bacon I know and love is widely available here as "streaky bacon" as an alternative, so all is well, no complaints. I don't care for the gherkins too, as I much prefer big dill pickles, but they are hard to find sometimes. I suppose I could get cucumbers, some jars and a bit of dill and just make them.
Oh, and as a Southerner, I was extremely pleased to find pickled pig's feet in the supermarket, not sure who is the target audience or ethnicity for it here, just surprised and pleased to see it, although not always available. Oh, and also, they got fresh okra - blew my mind when I saw it here! I love the old fashioned butcher shops here too, they're so great. Now I just need to find a way to get green tomatoes somewhere around these parts, I miss them a lot. Sorry for the massive commentary, I don't talk much in real life so it comes out when I comment sometimes, lol. Thank you for sharing the video.

Love Bovril ,as we grew up with it . Speshly nice after a fever if you are not feeling like a full meal especially after the Flu as a pick me up.. Love it, lightly spread on a buttered slice of bread or toast YUM, YUM . Always keep both MARMITE AND BOVRIL in our pantry. NO wonder folk do not like these wonderful spreads we Britons yearn for when we are abroad and are without as It has to be spread LIGHTLY and NOT as JAM(Jelly to the Yanks) and very thickly.as they do with Peanut butter. Marmite, the right amount of it in water as a drink is wonderful too with a slice of Lemon.

we yanks use jam and jelly. In the U.S. jam and jelly are simply two names for fruit spreads, that differentiate the texture.

Having lived in the Southern Hemisphere most my life in British and former British colonies I know what Vegemite, Marmite and Bovril are... how could I not? The band "Men at Work" sang about Vegemite in their popular hit "Down Under"... Marmite and Bovril have songs of love and appreciation too but none were as popular as Men at Work's Down Under. Americans are unlikely to appreciate these products. Hot beverages to Americans are Hot Chocolate derivatives containing significant sugar or sweetener, savoury anything struggles for acceptance BUT for most British folk no matter where they're at, life is incomplete without these three spreads.

As a seasoned Bovril drinker I have to tell you that didn't do it properly.
The mugs you used were far too large for the quantity of Bovril you spooned.
Also, try sprinkling a healthy quantity of white pepper to the finished drink.
    Enjoy!

One of my good friends who is from the Midwest loves Marmite. It is the first time I have ever seen an American love the stuff since most people outside of the UK and a lot of Brits themselves think the stuff is foul.
So I got him a jar of Bovril, reminding him that it shares some similarity to Marmite but is largely beef based. He still hasn't yet opened it so I guess he might be afraid.....
    Who knows?

This was just a refreshingly unedited genuinely funny reaction. I’m kinda stickler though no professional at critiquing This kinda thing, but whenever I watch reaction channels they start very good and overtime become very forced and try to be funny, that first sip, stare, then the perfect simultaneous second sip couldn’t be scripted or written in the best movie. Then the “uh, it taste like something that I shouldn’t be drinking” was amazing and timed exquisitely
