@NeilJRoberts thanks for the help, but I don't think he hits the kick twice in a row during the lick, and I've never heard it covered properly in the context of the song. Which is why I thought Joe should take a look at it.
Have u ever covered that fill Gadd does in the song 'Chucke's In Love', it occurs at the end of that slow middle piece to bring it back to the chorus, It's a typical classic paradiddle type fill that he's well known for, but it's hard to hear exactly what he's doing between the hats and snare.
@allmetaliswelcome Maybe.... I'm currently working on a MasterClass of a Gary Novak solo which I'm very excited about.... Part 1 will be live as soon as I can edit it all together.
@naedsukram I haven't. I'll add it to my list of things to look at - it would be nice to do some Gadd stuff. My focus for the next few weeks will be the SoloWorkshops. I'll be posting information about those later today - I'm quite excited about it!
Fantastic and brilliant piece(s) of knowledge there!!! With great effort committment and dedication,its stuff like this that could take many good drummers to the very good drummer status. Very kind of you to make thisknowledge public. I shall have a bash at this soon!!! Cheers.
@Brok3nCarlos Thanks :) Yeah, the BC2 is always on now. I feel like something's missing if I forget to switch it on. At the moment I just have the kick through it. I haven't felt the need to put anything else through it. On a festival I might want my toms in there too, but that would mean relying on a monitor man - so I think it'll probably just remain a kick thing for me.
ahk. thats cool. because i might sound like a bit of a pov but i dont have a bass drum mic. all i have is a universal/singing mic which actually picks up the toms and a bit of the snare when i use my BC2. it's just that i wanted to make sure if any other drummers who have the bumchum have it set up with the toms or if it really is mainly for the kick drum. not sure if i should get bass drum and tom/ snare mics. thanks for the help man
@wdreamsmaycome ...and Omar's drumming on Two Lines by Weather Report on the Procession album. Another amazing example of how versatile and fluid a drummer he is.
@wdreamsmaycome I love Shadows in the Rain. I remember sitting in a hotel lobby when I was on holiday with my parents waiting to be seated in the restaurant. I would have been 14 or 15. I was practicing overlapping triplets with my hands on my knees. I've been meaning to do a video on that intro for some time. Omar Hakim definitely needs some more attention from me ;) I'm just finishing up the editing of part 1 of a new MasterClass series. Lots of great fill ideas in that...
@wdreamsmaycome I think most of that album is sequenced drums triggering samples. Shadows in the Rain is probably the only one that's played live. However, check out the Bring on the Night double CD for some seriously awesome drumming. I learned so much from that album.
Another nice explanation. There are two vinnie licks that I've wanted to work through for years, but maybe you've already done them...? One is a really cool fill in a Tom Scott tune Get a Grip from the album Flashpoint (end of sax solo - going into guitar solo). The other is a fill from the second tune vinnie does on the buddy rich tribute video (fill going into first solo).
Great stuff Joe. You have incredible patience to work these licks out!! If you get time, can you please try Mark Brzezicki's tom fill on "Tall ships go" on Big Country's Steeltown album? It's an incredible one bar fill and I can't quite work it out. Keep up the good work mate!! Greg.
@Brok3nCarlos I wouldn't get tom/snare mics just for feeding the BC2. If you want to do multitrack recording of drums then it's worth getting decent mics, but to be honest a stereo mic above your head and a mic in the kick will give you a good drum sound. That's how Zeppelin rolled!
I've been waiting for somebody to break down this lick for sooo long. Thank you!

thank you Joe for giving me my Vinnie fix
so many great licks
I really appreciate your hard work
Man, Your lessons are more than great! Respect Joe and thank You very much!
@pfefftube Solo workshops...Cool. Yeah, that Gadd fill is less than one bar from memory, it's the space that he leaves that makes it so effective.

@naedsukram The first SoloWorkshop is live on my MasterClass page. I haven't announced it yet, but it's now there if you want to check it out!

@lileulileu You're very welcome. Thanks for watching...
Sweet! Nicely demonstrated

Hey man exelent fills, thanks a lot!!, hi from mexico
Joe is positive crazy guy! Follow him - practice with him, you will notice your advanced performance. Strongly recommended.
hey joe, could you maybe teach some garibaldi grooves?
wow!
@naedsukram I think it's just doubles starting with the bass drum, right hand on the hi-hat, left hand on the snare - F F L L R R L L F F L
nice fill lesson. btw. did you use your BC2 there and have you set it up so you can feel the toms, snare and kick or just kick
@wdreamsmaycome Are you sure nobody else has done that. I know a lot of people love Mr Peart.
I've added them to my list ;)
Do you give private lessons over skype by chance?
Matt Markus I do when I'm in the studio, but that won't be until Christmas. Unless you want a lesson where I only have a pad and sticks.
@bigbossmatt Search for 'Frank Zappa - Catholic Girls' and go to 1:34 in the video ;)
@bigbossmatt That information is classified.
I think the lick sounds a lot better when it's at a slower medium tempo.
Definitely sounds like vinnie
