I’m amazed at all the drummers today studying Vinny & Dave for phrases starting on the bass drum and coming up to the hands, displacement stuff and now backwards rolls. All this stuff was done in the 70’s by Tony way before Vinny and certainly before Dave came on the scene in the early 80’s. I’m showing my age!
Well credit should actually be given to GARY CHAFFEE! Back in the 50's and 60's you had Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, and Elvin Jones doing the basics of bassdrum first, and in different placements. But for me Chaffee really delved into hand and bassdrum placements, that many top drummers taking lessons or studying his books. What i hate is these Gospel Chop drummers acting as if they've created the Linear drumming. Everything they're doing is what Chaffee was doing in the early 1970's

Wow Louie!! Just amazing technique, and Im sure every drummer would like to have that snare drum sound. Excellent in every way. Greetings from Argentina.
when the phrase starts on the e and goes 32nds all the way through is so cool! thanks for posting this...the "easy hand" concept for counter clock wise motion is really useful...i really appreciate the info...happy drumming
Ok, the fill is amazing. But can I still take a moment to compliment this guy's back beat!? Great groove and feel bro, aside from the fill feature which im trying to study now thanks to this lesson here
6:52 edit caught me off guard. haha. Great lesson, your drumming is wonderful as usual. You along with maybe Lester Estelle and Larry Belton Jr. are a few of the most underrated drummers.
Oh lovely technique you have going on with that beautiful traditional grip. I have been playing traditional since I was 8 years old and I still get into some heated debates with those that say it is silly, useless and even just plain dumb. It puzzles me!
AMAZING!! I wish I could get my Pearl Masters MCX to sound this good! Love you work and just trying it wakes up a whole new flow on the drum set. Is there a reason why your smaller tom is T2 and the switch position is the way you create this amazing sound.
Swapping the 10 and 12 around (like the set-up in my other videos) creates some cool fill ideas. I treat it like a 4-piece kit (12" and 14") with the 10" slotted in the gap. That also means the ride comes closer and it's more comfortable for traditional grip. Rolls around the drums sound weird but cool too...the 10" really pops out.
I really appreciate your videos. So well made and played. And the sound is extremely good. Obviously that comes from a well played and well tuned kit in a good room. But can I please ask you what kind of console/interface/preamps you are using?
I think it’s possible that Vinnie got this from Tony Williams. Just watch a few of the RUclips videos that shows him soloing. He does this type of thing. Thanks for the tutorial.
Are the rack toms..10&12 or 12&13 ? I just found out that my set ( Mapex ) has a 13" available. I'm using 10 12 14 16 now. I moved my -_-hat over my hihat like you. I love it !. Thinking of interchanging the 10 and 12 like you. Sounds very different. I like it. Greg
Hey man! I know you're a Meinl artist now but do you have any of your old Sabian cymbals left that you'd be willing to sell? Looking for the main ride in this video :D
So with my kit, I want a bigger slightly untraditional sound but as full as your kit do you have any recommendations? Also, I'm coming off of knee (r), surgery any tips for getting back that feel and flow?
The Gretsch USA Custom is my favourite model from Gretsch...can't beat that maple/gum combination...it's very versatile...can tune it high or low. As for getting back into the flow...there are a few lessons on my site that will help. I talk about 'flowing' in various note rates (16th notes, 16th note triples, 32nd notes) and learning to play and be comfortable in those note rates so that you can improvise rather than relying on stock fills that you learn by heart. There are also a TON of great hand exercises for endurance and speed as well as overall control and technique. Check it out - playbetterdrums.com/
Bottom head tighter than the top...same way I tune the toms and bass drum. The bottom head on the snare will be quite a lot tighter than the top though.
I just ordered some 16" HHX Groove Hats! I have the 15" size and they are currently my favorites. Your playing is ridiculously good. Are you hip to the Gary Chaffee Patterns Series? That method really opened up for me a lot of what you are demonstrating here.
his kit sounds amazing...studio/gig perfect. does any one in the drum cult ever wear a shirt that isn't black? like to see one guy break the code just once! starting to get too serious for me...lol then there is muting the drum w/t hand as though the tom/snare will ring so loudly to interrupt the talk...again...lighten up...these little things almost are a direct notation of who someone is influenced by...drummer X and Y do this and wear this, therefore I will...
Vinnie says it all the time that his greatest influence is TONY WILLIAMS but its guy's like this that will try to marginalize that by trying to credit Vinnie with their claim of him being the 1st drummer they ever heard play something! It's pathetic just go listen to some Tony Williams it might be the best you ever did for your own drumming.
One of the most understandable drum lessons I’ve ever seen. Great instruction.

All your snares sound amazing.
Best English drummer I have on here. Nice sound crisp and very even.
Wow Louie!! Just amazing technique, and Im sure every drummer would like to have that snare drum sound. Excellent in every way. Greetings from Argentina.

Always nice to see the drum transcription , makes following easier

EvilAlbear yeah, I think the main benefit is because it looks so cool, especially going blazing fast.

awesome lesson👍🏻
What ride is that bro? Your drumming is so fluid.
Nice to travel leading with the left. Tony showed me his way - lead with the right. Harder but more intence.
Tremendous technique
This is insanely good! 💥❤
I really appreciate your videos. So well made and played. And the sound is extremely good. Obviously that comes from a well played and well tuned kit in a good room. But can I please ask you what kind of console/interface/preamps you are using?
Nice as Always🙏🏼 Lovely hihat Sound😮 Which model is it..?
Tony showed me that going around forward or back, always lead with the right hand.No other way to have clean power.
I think it’s possible that Vinnie got this from Tony Williams. Just watch a few of the RUclips videos that shows him soloing. He does this type of thing. Thanks for the tutorial.
Tony was a big single stroke guy.
I don't see a link to part 1. Thanks, great video!
Part 1 is in the members area at playbetterdrums.com - that dealt with phrasing in triplets, part 2 is 32nd notes.
Great lesson Louie, what is the ride on your right (Vault?)
It's a Vault yes but the Ralph Peterson ride...now discontinued but think they replaced it with something similar.
Excellent segment. What sticks and what snare drum do you use. My family is from Norththumberland!!
Drums sound great. Hm, Vinnie just went back to Gretsch again, too... Always played Yamaha myself, but I dunno...
Bjørn Håvard Bakken that Great Gretsch Sound! most recorded drums in history!
You are a beast man!!
I want that sound.
awesome!
Killer! How do you compare this one to your previous Gretsch kit?
Much better. These shells are great...love playing them and they record great.
Intro fills sound are very Tony-esque. Thanks for this! Is the first version of this on youtube as well?
First part is in the members area at playbetterdrums.com

Nice!
Thanks!!!
Great playing, lesson and lick. Nice sound too, I only have one question, what mics are you using for drums and cymbals? Thnaks!
Thanks. Audix mics...D2's on racks, D4's on floors, D6 on kick and SCX-01 as OH's
***** Thanks Louie!
what snare and heads on snare are you used? sound very nice! articulate...
Gretsch USA snare with Remo coated ambassador
thanks)
The snare sounds fantastic
Nice playing - I get it.. but how come on side shots a Dave Weckl signature type cymbal is visible, on overhead shots its.... disappeared ?
What line of Gretsch drums are you using on this video? They sound great!
USA Custom - thanks!
USA custom
aonde tem o Pdf desse exercício?
So... you've really never heard/seen Tony Williams do this...?
right thats all Tony williams
He never said Vinnie did it first.. just that he heard it done by Vinnie first.
another lame worthless comment...drummer X played that in 1936, therefore...
Hey man! I know you're a Meinl artist now but do you have any of your old Sabian cymbals left that you'd be willing to sell? Looking for the main ride in this video :D
which series is this sabian crash that is positioned on your left side?
Wow good player
Thanks!
What cymbals are you playing?
louie your sssssmokin' you got a video of you playing with a group?
Louis Palmer: Can you tell me what color your beautiful Gretsch is? Is it "Satin Blue Ice Metallic" or "Silver Mist"?

Which Gretsch model is this?
Louie,
Please, how do you tune this snare? I would appreciate. Good luck with cyrofreeze,,,,frozen paradiddles. Thank you.
Bottom head tighter than the top...same way I tune the toms and bass drum. The bottom head on the snare will be quite a lot tighter than the top though.
Thanks a lot.
Hey Louie, what hi-hats are those? They look like 16's?
15" HHX Groove hats
I just ordered some 16" HHX Groove Hats! I have the 15" size and they are currently my favorites.

How many times do you use this in a song the only time you would use this is to showboat to make sure that you look FU king cool
Black tee, black back ground:/

I'm really sorry that I was 15 and happened to discover Vinnie before Tony - I'm such a piece of shit, I'm sorry.
God these Gretsch absolutely destroy the Pearls. Not sure why he changed but wow...Great drummer.
Excellent!
