Tom Nook is literally one of the most generous realtors like, ever:
•He immediately gives you a free tent/house to begin with, no charge whatsoever
•He doesn’t evict you, doesn’t take away your house if you don’t pay your loan.
•He lets you pay your loans whenever you want to, and doesn’t pressure you that much unless you come to him.
•There is no interest, no hidden fees, he’s totally honest.
•90% of his profits go to an orphanage, he says it himself.
•He helps his nephews with their own business
•He remembered Sable’s birthday when no one else would, and gave her a thoughtful gift
•He always tries to work with you and make the loan and house work with you, despite him not being in the best financial place at the beginning of the game

In New Horizons, Tom actually doesn’t force the player to purchase a house upgrade until they’re ready. He also allows the player to pay off their moving fees with Nook Miles (a currency you earn by doing quests) or Bells. I think that New Horizons does him a lot more justice in the good guy department!

Why do people hate Tom Nook? Poor Tom Nook, he's just trying to help you pay for a place to live (in the first 3 games at least) by offering you a part time job, and the chores aren't even hard (unless you're 3 or 4 years old or something, which I was when I played animal crossing for the first time)

Also, in New Leaf if you see him sitting at the Roost and talk to him, he'll make remarks about how he needs to get some additional coffees for the Able sisters, Blathers, etc. and how you should talk to Sable/their friendship. And, randomly at the HHA table, you'll get a forth dialogue option, which will prompt him and Tom to discuss their old lives, where Tom will tell you about struggling in the city.
Ok so no lie this gave me a new view on nook. I always thought he was evil like a majority of people did but after watching this I have changed my ideas. HE might be money hungry but he's not evil.

What is tom nook was an orphan and then his two nephews (Timmy and Tommie) parents died orphaning them and he took them in so they didn't end up like he did.

Fire the Skeleton Sans' Wife it’s very common for games made by Nintendo to have dark stories or premises, it’s common for the Japanese tradition to go down that path, definitely when you look into a lot of the creatures this game is based off you realise that most are based of some sort of dark premise (like the fact nook isn’t a racoon in the original Japanese versions, he’s a tanuki)

Ever since I began playing Animal Crossing back in 2009, I never found Tom Nook evil. Just keep in mind the importance of tanukis in Japanese folklore. I'm pretty sure this argument doesn't exist among Animal Crossing's Japanese fanbase.

If you don't pay attention to his story he really just comes off as someone who just wants money, especially since a lot of people played it as kids, so things like him making us work just seemed a really mean thing for a lot of kids

When I first played Wild World, after I collected enough oranges and sold them to him, I went to pay the mortgage and it turns out I was a few coins away.
By few, I meant a lot. I thought it was just 1,800 but it was actually 18,000. And I was missing the rest. I tried to reason that it was fine because he had built it but I was still angry.
Yesterday, when I finally finished paying my mortgage, and he offered to expand my house, I agreed because my place was becoming a closet. Besides it was just another 18,000, surely it wouldn't be anymore than that.
I'm not going to pay him anymore unless I get 1 mil bells.

The first Animal Crossing game I played was Wild World, and I took an instant dislike to Tom Nook... So much so that on the same day I got the game, I made a constellation called Nook Stinks... I was 11. Since then I'd rebuilt my town a few times and as a kind of weird recurring joke, I kept remaking the Nook Stinks constellation lmao

This helped me see Tom Nook in a new light. It was interesting to hear about his backstory.
I loved Tom Nook from the start. I dunno why, I just loved his color scheme and how he looked lol
Tom Nook is and forever will be my favorite Animal Crossing character ever! It makes me so sad how so many people hate him. In the real world, interest free home loans are nonexistent, I believe, and if they do exist they are rare. The real world is a cold and evil place at times, so escaping to another world where kindness is a highlight is refreshing.
Tom Nook is like literally the most generous person in Animal Crossing- I have no idea why people hate on him so much! He deserves more love than what people give him, he didn't have a home before in the first game, and slept at his own shop, but then he helps you buy a house. That's very nice if you ask me.

Nook is actually a pretty good guy. He gives you a house that costs barely anything, doesn't require you to pay off your debt, and upgrades your house once you pay said debt off and you get a new debt that can be payed off the same way.
People thought Tom Nook was like "Shut up and give me money."
But he's actually "Give me money because I have a horrible life and I lost everything and I don't even have my own home."
When you mentioned that he lost everything, I almost cried because when people lose their homes I don't like seeing them in the streets.

Why do people hate Tom? He's obsessed with money, but I always found that to be just a quirk of his character. In New Horizons, whenever he makes that "I'm scheming to get more money" face, I think it's funny, not evil.

I got the feeling that not taking no as an answer to expansion is more a hardened perspective's generosity. He doesn't want to see you end up like him when he had it rough, wants to help you thrive, plus sees expansion is good for you (inventory space and all that). A "you'll love it once you have it" kind of thing, as well as not letting you be modest about what you're provided.

No he isn't evil but I find it funny that in Happy Home Designer he literally pulls the "if the people need a villain I'll play that role" trope. Like he knows what people say about him, he knows that people have come to see him as nothing more than a greedy loan shark at best. But he isn't mad, he actually is okay with it in truth. He wants to be the rallying point for the people, and even if he needs to be the villain he will be for that goal.
Of course it is also possible that even when people know the truth, and still joke about it that he himself is in on it. He plays into the jokes because he knows it is in good fun. He really is a good guy at heart no matter how you slice it.
Especially given how he hit rock bottom, thanks to Redd scamming him in a business venture gone south. And then you consider who Redd's new partner was, Lyle. Someone who later, tenuously in New Leaf and blatantly in Happy Home Designer, actively became Nook's business partner.
Doesn't matter, my town name is the United States and he's has a Monopoly on bells making him a true crook

This is so sad, but beautiful at the same time. Tom has always been my favorite character, he might seem addicted to money, but he actually Isn't, he's just too scared to loose everything again.
