    • @Mourag

      I think we tend to think that way, but it has nothing to do with it. As in waterbending, they stick the molecules of water together forming ice, lavabending is the opposite. Molecules of earth once together are separated turning it liquid. Lava is not fire.

    This is literally the most lethal skill in all of Avatar. If a hit from Bolin or Ghazan connects, you are *dead* guaranteed. The only reason Bolin doesn't win every battle he's in after learning this skill is because he's trying to avoid killing anyone.
    Hell, if we were operating on real world logic, the hit wouldn't even need to connect. They could seriously wound you just by hitting anywhere close to you

    • @Gamecraft2525
      @Gamecraft2525 3 года назад +424

      Bloodbending can break all your internal organs in a matter of seconds. Lava doesn't stand a chance.
      EDIT: okay since I keep getting replied to this is my justification:
      Now although Lavabending can and will kill upon contact, the lavabender would need to hit their target first. This is the same as every other bending type, air, water, earth and fire. They have to hit their opponent to deal damage. This is common sense. Now explain to me how one can "dodge" bloodbending other than simply being a stronger waterbender? The answer is you can't. The only counter to bloodbending is to be a stronger water bender. And if you want to be realistic if this wasn't a children's show Bloodbender can just rip all of the blood out of your body in an instant, leaving you a bloodless deoxified and heavily mutilated corpse as every single vein, capillary and artery has bursted.
      If you want to talk about destructive power on the other hand, such as collateral damage etc that would certainly have to be earthbending or lavabending for obvious reasons. If you disagree with any of this please let me know so I can consider if I am wrong.
      Another Edit: So taking into account how range works, if a lavabender were to be far enough away, they could theoretically defeat a bloodbender by keeping their distance and ssending lava forward.
      As for air bending suffocation, while it likewise does not need to hit, it only prevents the opponent from breathing. A powerful bender could still bend while being suffocated, although not for long of course. But theoretically if an airbender were to choke a bloodbender the bloodbender could just bloodbend back and cancel the suffocation since being bloodbent prevents you from bending unless you have telekinetic bending.
      Now stop god damn replying to me never would have thought one comment i made a year ago would get this much attention

    • @dot2dot969
      @dot2dot969 3 года назад +230

      But that can be done (other than by that dude's family) one night out of every four weeks. Lavabenders just can. But in pure damage to one person in optimal conditions it's probably tied.

    • @cleanerwhite9470
      @cleanerwhite9470 3 года назад +342

      I mean if it's 1 on 1, blood benders win against anything.
      But lava benders can seemingly take down whole army by themself. Or any structure, through any defense. Lava bending could've taken care of the Ba Sing Se wall in minutes.
      So I wouldn't say it's the strongest but definitely the most destructive.

    There's a theory that talks about why Bolin can't metalbend, and why he can lavabend. Metalbending seems to be a lot more precise and elegant in its movements, requiring a lot less brute force. It requires feeling the impurities in the earth. On the other hand, lavabending is literally heating and breaking earth down, which would require a lot more raw power and strength. What Bolin lacks in precision, prevents him from metalbending. But what he has with brute strength, allows him to lavabend.

      @@Villenosity He doesn't mean precision with aim, he means that only few benders are precise enough to pick apart an element from its roots to access subcategories like metalbending. • @ddchrw
      @ddchrw 2 года назад +43

      I thought metal bending required precision to feel out the earthen impurities within the metal, as well as a lot of brute force to muscle them into warping metal. Metal bending when not done on objects made specifically for bending, like the police wires, make grinding squeaks and often come out crumpled and crinkled.
      For lava bending, I thought it required a more fluid and flexible mentality, which is what Bolin had. There’s little hard evidence for this, other than general character traits and Bolin’s pro bending philosophy: stay floaty and on your toes until you need to really dig in and make a shot.

    There's a lot of theories on what the deal is with lavabending. My personal favourite is that lavabending, like Iroh's lightning redirection, requires the techniques/mindset of another bending style adapted to yours (in both cases, waterbending).
    It makes sense, since waterbending is the only style of bending that changes the state of the matter they're bending (water to ice and back again) like Bolin does with the lava. His movements also become a little bit looser when he lavabends, just a tiny bit closer to the flowing forms of waterbending as opposed to the rigid forms of earthbending.
    It would also explain why he struggled with metalbending. Metalbending is the solid, stubborn, face it head-on attitude of earthbending taken even further. If lavabending aligns more with the "go with the flow, use precision rather than brute force" philosophy of waterbending (which we actually already know that Bolin has a tendency towards), that would mean you'd need almost opposite mindsets for lavabending and metalbending. Which explains why Bolin struggled so much with one but the other was natural

      I realized after rewatching this clip that he yells when the lava is going above his block-I think his yell during that epic moment was because he just knew instinctively that his block had failed and his friends were about to be hit.
      I kind of realized that too because I just had a Bolin moment myself this week.
      I was walking with my family to go see fireworks on the 4th of July and my niece was walking in front of me. She’s 5 and knows to keep to the sidewalk but what none of us realized was she wasn’t familiar with train tracks. And basically there were train tracks that went through the sidewalk on our way.
      She veered to go into the road when a car was coming because she was trying to go around the train tracks.
      I know exactly now unfortunately what Bolin felt like. It’s like you’re not even thinking but reacting. I immediately rushed forward and I remember just making the conscious thought to basically come between her and the car and willing to block her.
      I didn’t honestly realize that I had successfully prevented her from getting into the road. I thought I was going to get hit but didn’t care in the moment.
      I did injure my shoulder in the process of diving for my niece and hitting my arm really hard on the ground. Basically dislocated my shoulder. It’s in a sling now.
      But I did save my niece and she’s perfectly fine.
      But yeah in that moment with Bolin I see too that he didn’t react with a yell except when the lava went over his block and so I think he wasn’t even thinking of himself at all but just going, no! Essentially and then he takes it back.
      I love Bolin.

THEY HAVE A DEEP SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND LOVE THAT HOLDS THEM TOGETHER THROUGH ANYTHING.” (This is in all caps because i copied it from the Wiki)
    Bolin has endured many changes throughout his whole life. The loss of his parents. Getting involved in a gang. Pro bending. Becoming a movie star. Fighting against radical extremists. He fought through it all and never backed down.
    He also has a great sense of community. He makes friends where ever he goes.

    I wish they did an episode of what happened to Bolin in the years before Korra came back. I wanted to see him learn more about his lava bending and finding a teacher to teach him or for him to slowly learn about it. I would’ve liked to see how he got wrapped up with Kuvira. How his relationship with everyone was when he was away. I would’ve liked to see him grow as a person.

    People misunderstand Bolin's ability to Lavabend, some people assum that it's because he's half Fire Nation, but that's not a factor at all. No Sub Bending Ability is "exclusive" like some assume. Every Bender of a particular Element theoretically has the capability to Bend any given sub Element, so every Waterbender was the potential to be a Bloodbender. It's just that some people have an affinity for certain skills. Bolin couldn't Metalbend, not because he wasn't born with the skill, but rather because he just doesn't have the finesse required for it. But he could Lavabend, because he has the skill and sheer Power for Phase Shifting Solid Rock into a liquid. It's really impressive considering how dangerous it is.

    • @Zac_Frost
      @Zac_Frost 2 года назад +5

      Exactly. It's shown multiple times that there are no "Hybrid Bender" characters of mixed heritage, as Bending is genetic, and affects the same gene in all people. If you inherit the "Earth Gene" you're going to be an Earthbender even if your Mom is from the Fire Nation, as shown with Mako and Bolin. Mako got the "Fire Gene" from their Mom, and Bolin got the "Earth Gene" from their Dad. It's shown with Aang and Katara's family, as well. Kya inherited the "Water Gene" from Katara, while Tenzin inherited the "Air Gene" from Aang, with Bumi apparently being a carrier for the "Air Gene" that was activated by Harmonic Convergence to change him from a genetic carrier to an inherited user.
      Bolin being a Lavabender is just because the approach to it fits his personality. Lavabending is wild, chaotic, and erratic, just like Bolin. Metalbending, as you said, takes more patience, finesse, and focus to learn. I'm sure if Bolin was taught proper focus, and maybe started to meditate every so often to learn patience and gain the ability to concentrate more closely on things, he could learn Metalbending, too. I'm sure the combo of all 3 would make him surpass Toph at some point.

    Two great things about lava bending:
    1. How Bolin moves from just trying to redirect and stop lava in B3, to traditional earthbending techniques with lava, to lava construsts like Ghazan's in the finale.
    2. Almost all of Korra bending is quick attacks based off of 1920s combat sports, compared to the big slow sweeping motions of ATLA. Not lavabending tho. It's so rare that no lave bender has had the need or ability to evolve like that.

    It’s been official stated that having mix parenting does not contribute to bending prowess! The reason that Bolin can lava bend is not because he has a fire-bending parent, but just as water benders can phase shift matter of water into ice and gas, so can all other bending arts if one is aware of how to do it and how it works. He basically moves pieces of “earth” so quick between each other that heat is produced by friction, which in turn melts the “earth” particles. The alternative is to use his earth-bending to compress earth to such extreme state that it melts and liquifies and turns into lava. Basically he can simulate Earth’s core! I doubt even the Avatar can do something like this on such a scale, the only time seen, is when Aang fought Ozai and compressed the earth rocks into smaller more compact pieces that he shot off at Ozai.
