DRL is the first professional race series for FPV drone racing. The Drone Racing League brings the world's best pilots together to fly the DRL Racer3 quadcopters head-to-head through new exciting neon-lit race courses. Drone Racing is the sport of the future, and you can find all of the full races, crashes, and competition on www.thedroneracingleague.com and here on / thedroneracingleague . - Спорт
I don't know if DRL is honestly only planning to build drones for the races. But...These guys are sitting on a gold mine product wise if the league takes off. I'm talking about people wanting a 'league' drone. I haven't looked at comments but I imagine a lot are similar to what I thought...
"Oooh I want one"
Interested to see your plans DRL...
100% agree. Seen this, first thing I thought (as I'm planning on buying a racer soon) is "I wonder if these actual DRL R3's are for sale themselves??
I just checked, not available for the public to purchase, but it's thought they might consider selling in the future as it's already tipped to be a huge revenue source for the league.
It'll also be a ready-made spec series if they want to go that route with regional events. Yeah, I'd be excited about that setup... although there might be some enterprising companies who can make lookalike builds, and sell those.
That would be like Nascar making all the cars for all the races...
it's just a $50 frame...with $20 motors and several $30 bits and parts all that gets damaged daily
the money is in the $500 display goggles and the 200$ controllers and whatever is left in your wallet for the endless supply of batteries we use...
but yes as a racer we need to train with what is required at the track...
but not with the tracks provided equipment the day of the race...that is just crazy
that is not going to work
they can make a weight class or something but a racer needs air time with a drone to be able to get it to fly like they want
then they can raise the requirements motor size/ battery size/ prop size just like in nascar they change things every year to make it more competitive and the winner is the consumer as manufacturers make more powerful longer lasting parts
and after the race drones inspected by officials before proclaiming a winner then they are kept and thoroughly documented and the faster drones become the template for next years race...
WE WIN :)
It would be more like International Race of Champions supplying all of the cars for the races... which they do.
And as such, they're able to select fast cars, but not need to be on the bleeding edge of technology development to have good racing... which they do.
Finally, it's a major marketing opportunity (although for IROC, the cars are supplied to them as a marketing tool, as it's a great way for manufacturers to advertise their stuff to have the world's best racing their equipment).
I agree with you, a Formula series (Propeller Size/Frame Size/Battery Volume/Mass formula with series specified on-board camera and VTX equipment) would also be excellent, but DRL handling all of the logistics and making it a spec series makes individual pilot performances far less about the reliability of parts, and much more about the skill involved. It also encourages a different flying style from the pilots, which has helped enable a much more visually impressive type of racing because they don't mind quite as much if they tag a solid object at full speed trying for a race result.
Amazed at this vid...Just had to watch it like 10 times. Soo cool.
Awesome racer!!
I Love the new drones for season 2
The vfx of this video is really sweet! Are you guys going to make this frame available to the public? You guys could make some extra coins for the league by having a merch store!
that would be like nascar making the cars...
John Padgett I have to disagree really because most of the frames that top pilots fly today are sold on the market. The only thing different is that they have these quads on espn2.
SO Psyched!!!!
the new drones look awesom
Yeah that so looks the best yet, going to be a really great season to watch, DVR and watch again!!
What flight controller is being used?
Good idea using a translucent shell to diffuse the LEDs.
hey DRL, its been a while.
when will you launch this model for purchases worldwide ?
Nice one!! Looks really cool. Anyone know what's the track name in this video?
Man you guys must have a huge budget. Outstanding quad btw!
where can we get one of those and for how much?
I WANT THAT.
Hook me up DRL!
Imagen lote the new drones for seaon 2
OMG New drons
What is the prize?
Will this be added to the Fpv simulator.............that would be a yes holy crap it's there right now it's in test drive but still
It will be added, but only on the version that's gonna be released here on Steam: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=899174149
FC? ESC? How bout some actual info...
i want to buy a drone... where???? and how much?
learn to make your own then when you crash you can fix and be happy
John Padgett i know how but i want a racer
They are getting money for giving it out in TV. And if they were to just post on youtube it will void the reason for TV to buy this, so they won't have more money so there won't be more races. And they have a contract saying that nothing can be posted. But please negotiate a statement in the contract that you can post the footage here for free when it's a few months after the event goes on TV
Umm.... Who buys TV/cable packages nowadays? Most of the people I know are cord cutters, especially the younger gen, which this new sport directly targets. If they are betting on the Xfinity and co. for their viewer base, they are doomed.
nascar races are mostly public property
being there is always better
the money is in the sponsors and the manufacturers who make parts that win
We see the winner and we read his hat...then we go buy that brand fuel filter with hopes it will make our car faster...
Also...
13 people are pissed because they aren't flying these.
there will be terrible glare on that "protective" screen for the fpv camera.
That's a gopro session, the fpv cam is a standard hs1177 cam with a gopro lense
DronyHawk watch the video again. the last thing to go on is a lense over both gopro and fpv.
Ah I see, I don't think those are actually on the quads though. They adjust the cam angle before every heat

ok a new drone that looks really cool , but who cares? You cant get one but, why not sell a plug and play version for everyone else?
I'd say similar to how you can't buy a current F1 car, despite how much money you have to spend. The tech is pretty much cutting-edge. Why sell them when they have a league based around racing them? If you're good racing drones, you'll be good with their model, so join up and see if you can compete. No reason to look for money from the few people who would actually be interested in something this high-performance because most people want a drone to take nice video, not to race. Those who do can build and hope they come near this performance, but will always fall a bit short, just like high-end race cars.
sundaynightdrunk ok, if you want to buy an f1 car go here, www.mementoexclusives.com/f1-cars-for-sale/
course they are all used as far as I know but, you can have your own f1. I would rather get the frame it looks strong and balanced. let's not forget the leds as well. I'm sure they do have a reason not to sell their quads but, still sucks for us. I guess we will all have to stick with our "nascar" quadcopters instead of one of these "F1"s.
Yeah, they have F1 cars for sale, but not *current* F1 cars, or even last year's models. Current tech is always protected in racing, and I see no reason why drones wouldn't follow that trend.
Actually, custom-built drones are as competitive as or even MORE competitive than Racer3 performance-wise, because serious racers equip 5S or 6S lipos and F4 flight control boards nowadays. But Racer3's frame and LEDs look pretty nice, and some people want it for its looks not its performance. Anyone into drone racing can build a drone that performs like the Racer3, but no one can have 'the' Racer3 unless he/she is invited to the DRL.
Personally, I don't think I can handle 5S power, so I want the DRL to sell a frame kit that includes only the frame and LEDs and stick with 4S powertrain. And I am almost certain that I am not the only one.
We don't run wide open courses here so a 4s setup is good as long as you have a good fcb. you do bring up a good point though and, for the price they would probably charge for it, you would do better just building your own. the lights are nice for spectators though.
I mean the visuals of DRL are just gorgeous! But the drone design itself...meh. If it's easy to repair it fast, than it's got its purpose but otherwise...why so thick arms?
Right! All for the show! Why no intakes for the ESCs and the VTX? I see the future with aerodynamic builds, may be with some additional small wings for needs. I don´t know how to think about it though. I don´t really see too much aerodynamic purpose on your Racer3 but it looks very nice for people who are not so deep into the hoppy.
Simulator is way too easy spent the time making it a bit harder to find the best racers :)
No actual real video, just cgi. Sad.
Excuse me for asking but, did anybody see a video of this thing flying up there /\ ? What a waste of time.
I did, on that neon ring track, why?!
Really Andrew? Please look again, that was CGI. I'd like to see one FLY!!!
do a search the pilots got their racer recently and have posted flight footage
postalinVT lol yeah sry you werent clear in your orginal comment, I seen the cgi one fly tho lol! Jp, but yeah this is a glimpse of a new quad on the drl.... not for a new drone elsewhere:P
DRL will crash and burn if they think they will make and sell proprietary drones
