Alex Kintner was the boy who was attacked out on his raft -- Several decades after the filming of Jaws (1975), Lee Fierro, who plays Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.

Umm…That’s not always true. I’m black and my brother and I used to LOVE getting in the water when we went to the beach. We’d spend hours in there, until our skin got wrinkled. I did have a scary experience once though. I was swimming and saw a group of fins swimming in a circular motion, probably around another fish or something, about 20 or 30 feet from me. I swam so fast that I was out of the water before the lifeguard even blew his whistle.

Man your love for your dogs is amazing.
I've only had love like that for one dog in my entire life. His name was Barnie. My mom got him for me through a friend of my aunts.
I was 11 years old and Barn Barn was young but grown. He was the smartest animal I've ever seen. He would set, speak, roll over, play dead, he would even play freeze tag. When tragedy struck my family when I was 16 and my mom passed away I would have never made it without the love from that dog. He was my absolute very best friend. He knew when the bus ran and would be at the bus stop every day. He loved playing, hunting with me or anything I was doing. He was my one true ride or die.
When I was 19 I was at work and when I came home from work my brother told me my dog had gotten run over by the bus and passed away. He had already buried him because he knew I wouldn't be able to do it.
My world changed that day and I knew my days of ever having another dog was over. I've tried but I've never found what I had with Barnie.
So now I'm 48 years old and still don't have a dog because none can compare to Barn Barn. My only hope is that when I die and go to heaven God allows me to have one pet in heaven. Then I'll have that wonderful dog Barnie for eternity. Thank you for the reactions and thanks for keeping the old saying MANS BEST FRIEND alive and well.

Living on Long Island, I noticed that the movie had indeed scared people out of the water. As a matter of fact only 14 people die every year from shark attack. 34,000 + from car accidents. When they made the animatronic sharks, the crew made them to be shot in freshwater. Unaware that the filmmakers would be filming in saltwater, which made "Bruce" malfunction a lot while filming. We were supposed to see him a lot more, but due to the malfunctioning they had to figure out ways around it. Hence the barrels, the music and the dock. Implying the shark's presence. And I'm glad we got what we got.

When i was in high school i got YMCA diving certified. Our final exam of sorts was a open water dive off the Caribbean Islands, absolutely beautiful! It was the 8 of us students, the instructor and his family. Great excuse for a family vacation lol. When we were down we suddenly realized that a school/family/swarm, not sure of the exact phrase, but a large number of very large sharks showed up. Turned out to be nurse sharks, not man eaters but definitely look the part. After the dive the instructor informed us that his mother was nicknamed "The shark lady" as every time she dived sharks showed up. At one point i was within easy reach of no less than three 10+ft long eating machines under 25ft of water. Would have been good information to have before hand. Still a great trip and one i can promise i'll never forget...EVER! Especially that one shark that looked me right in the goggles from less than 3ft away as if to say "Hey, what are you doing down here?" and then swam off.

Peter Benchley regretted writing this book after the movie came out and caused such a fear of sharks and caused people to indiscriminately go out and slaughter them. He subsequently has been trying to help save them since then.

Sharks can't really kill like that. I mean they can if they felt threatened. but in this film, it shows the body counts. and how many body counts it ate. It's not possible. I was told by a professional that, Sharks bellies can't deists food super-fast like. So, the body count would have caused issues. But the only other reasons sharks attack is territorial hungry or provoked. But there not all blood thirty murderous creatures. They just will try to take a bit out of anything just to see if it's editable. Like Editable Cookie dough. Lol.
but most of the time there not going to bother you or anyone else truthfully. as long as you know what your doing while swimming. Don't cause a panic to much that gains the Sharks attention because that's what prey does in the water. so, it's just going to think your a seal trying to run away.
just remember if you or anyone ever sees one. just remain calm and slowly try and make it back to sore if you can. but there are ways to avoid being bit.

Ah, Jaws. Lots of interesting trivia about it.
-Showing off what would become the talent that would define him as one of the great movie directors of all time, Steven Spielberg had a LOT of trouble with the actual fake shark (nicknamed "Bruce", which as an in joke, carried over to the animated film Finding Nemo, where a secondary shark character is named just that). He was still just starting out in the business and his budget was limited, so he couldn't just throw money at it like he'd be able to within five years of Jaws' release, so he worked around it by showing the shark as little as possible and using every trick he could think of to do that while still building suspense, which ended up working like gangbusters.
-The book was written by Peter Benchley, who ended up writing other marine-life focused horror/suspense novels. Unfortunately, Jaws was his first novel, so he was kind of weak when it came to character work, and so basically in the book every character is an asshole or unpleasant in some deep way (Spielberg commented on reading it that he wanted the shark to eat everyone). Spielberg changed a lot of that; in the book Roy's wife is a shallow, bored housewife who hates the blue collar life that her husband has 'dragged' her into and she actually has an affair with Hooper (the marine biologist), who in the book is an obnoxious, entitled POS who dies in the final battle with the shark, while their movie counterparts are a devoted housewife happy in her marriage, while Hooper is a much more likeable character who survives. Though one thing that got cut that makes the mayor's actions more understandable beyond 'we need the tourist dollars'; he's in debt to the Mafia and he needs a big weekend to skim money from to pay them back. Likewise, in the book Quint is just a greedy fisherman who hunts sharks, instead of a sympathetic WWII veteran and survivor of the USS Indianapolis. The shark's death in the book was considerably more dull: it just finally died of its wounds and sank, instead of a dramatic air tank explosion. Of course, in tradeoff, Quint the movie character got a far crueller death, especially considering the alterations to his character. In the book his leg got caught in a rope attached to an anchor and he was pulled underwater and drowned, whereas in the film...well, you saw. It's mean.
-Oh any and all gods, The USS Indianapolis. One of the mostly unknown utter horror stories of World War II. Didn't Quint make it known? Oh no. He didn't tell the half of it. Seriously. If you know all the details, masses of sharks showing up to pick off dozens if not hundreds of survivors is one of the LESSER bad things that happened. It was BAD. Just take my word for that, and look up further details (or listening to this podcast, Last Podcast on The Left, like I did) at your peril.
-This film's success had unexpected negative side effects: as you have likely seen in your Shark Week watches, great white sharks, and sharks in general, do not attack humans unless provoked, or you're bleeding in the water (their main hunting sense is smell, and they can detect even the slightest trace of blood, so a normal amount of blood from a wound can drive them crazy), or if they mistake them for one of their usual meals, like a seal (surfers on boards cast a similar profile and some have fallen victim to sharks as a result), and it's incredibly rare for a shark, even a great white, to grow to that size. And the rest is pure movie fiction: while Benchley LOOSELY based his book on a real life incident, the Jersey River shark attacks, it has been suggested those attacks happened because a saltwater fish like sharks are ended up trapped in the river, which is freshwater, and this caused it to suffer negative effects that made it very aggressive. The rest is all scary story falseness: sharks don't get 'tastes' for humans, or go out of their way to attack boats, especially if they're wounded. Unfortunately, these fine details were lost on people, who concluded ALL SHARKS ARE HORRIFIC MONSTERS and started killing them en masse, leading to Benchley (the original writer) becoming a marine preservationist later in his life. And of course, just like you, it scared generations of people into not wanting to go into the water. ANY water. Hell, the tagline for the film's sequel was "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water"...(which was promptly homaged and parodied immensely afterwards) One final irony: sharks had actually been seen as HARMLESS before the 1916 Jersey shark attacks, but the events and the feverish reporting and exaggeration and lack of conclusion (they never wholly proved they found the shark or sharks that had done the attacks) over the events flipped the pendulum and put the idea of 'sharks are killing machines that destroy all that come before them' into the public consciousness...which Spielberg promptly refreshed and reinforced with Jaws 60 years later. Oops.

But there was no way to translate that to film, so they get a pass. And the actor who did the scene was terrific! She was able to relay the terror very well without the thoughts in her head being heard.

Before I even start, Jaws is the the film that coined the theme of a Blockbuster(Blockbuster is now known as big budget films but it originally meant lines would form around the block to get into see a film and hence bust the block) With the proceeds from Jaws and Starwars. Theaters went from Single and two or three screens to Multiplex Theaters. Amazingly, we almost never got to see it because it ran 5 million dollars over budget and 100 days over schedule and pissed off residents of Martha’s Vineyard in my home state of MA that the studio almost pulled the plug on Spielberg.

I recently read that the kid in the back of the two and fake shark is now the mayor of that town, and Spielberg thought he could get one more good scare out of people with that head coming out of the wrecked boat - filmed in a swimming pool with milk added. Hello doggies ♥ And the real guy that went into that cage actually had a heart attack - but recovered. The Jaws Documentary is well worth watching.

As always, your reaction was as entertaining as the movie! So much to praise in this classic, but: I love how Quint grabs Hooper's arm after Hooper's lighthearted "Mother tattoo" joke is made. It's like Quint is communicating: Dude, I know we were making all kinds of silly jokes literally seconds ago, and you may feel bad about making that last one when you hear what my tattoo REALLY said, but it's all good, I won't hold it against you. And yes, I DO know that you will INSTANTLY know the significance when I say "The U.S. Indianapolis." Prepare to hear a riveting tale, my friend." Anyhow, I think that brilliant little arm grab by Shaw/Quint communicates all of that.

I always thought it would have been ironic if the blood cloud in the water as a result of the explosion had attracted a bunch of regular size sharks and got them in a frenzy. Brody and Hooper could have survived Jaws but then been taken out by an average 8 to 10 foot shark.

I was having the time of my life looking at all the beautiful fish until I looked down and a huge shark came out of some coral where he had been hunting fish and we came face to face and all I saw were teeth. I swear, I had never swam so fast in my life back to the boat. I haven't been snorkeling since but I do still go in the ocean since I live on the coast but it's only to my waist. The speech delivered by Quint about the USS Indianapolis tragedy is a true story, an actual historical fact. It really happened! His story relating the incident is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he was determined to personally secure the bounty and reward for killing the shark, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge (or perhaps redemption) for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by destroying the man-eating shark himself…

But I was only four! 😂 I literally was afraid to sit on the toilet or take a bath with bubbles. Four year olds don't know fresh and salt water, or at least they don't know a shark can't live in city water, much less navigate the sewers to our third floor bathroom. Nevertheless, even as a adult I can have a panic attack in a swimming pool if the theme pops into my head. That fear is primal.

    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the
shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish.
    7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce.
    8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story.

I was scared that Sharks AND Alligators would be waiting for me. I learned later on that Sharks, especially the Great White shark rarely attack people, and when it happens it's by mistake. Usually a shark will mistake a surfer for a seal or sea turtle. Small sharks are usually more of a threat and highly territorial, such as the Bull Shark. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
