My mama who lives in Yokohama didn't go anywhere either and stayed home. Last year, I was there during Golden Week... I didn't feel any difference but... then again, I didn't go to any tourist spots either! Also, when I'm in Japan, yes I take pictures but more for me and my memories and not anyone else! I try to enjoy my time there, enjoy my food, drinks and shopping and JAPAN... not for trying to post on social media! Maybe as you get older, the things we value change and hoping people realize... that is not about showing off, showing all the tourist spots, foods etc etc... but more about your valuable time and experience ❤😊
Great that you've mentioned the issue about garbage. Was in Osaka few weeks ago and the garbage situation is a little disappointing. Some tourists are leaving their drinks and food trash along the streets. On some areas at the back of Dotonbori, garbage is also piling up to the point that it eats up the walking space.
@@edsumil917not really . So it just piles up. We took our garbage home with us but for international hotspot they need to have more bins in tourist areas......
We just got back from Osaka and we didn't realise it was a holiday until we met up with Japanese friends It was craaaaazzzzzyyyy busy lines everywhere. We found Monday was already better. Still had a wonderful time
I was there from mid Apr to the start of golden week. We started early at around 5.30am and beat the crowd at the tourist spots that we know will be super crowded. We were able to enjoy the peace of Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Arakurayama Sengen and some other places without the crowd and the noise. It was a truly a serene experience.
Was in Sapporo last week (Golden Week). Glad we picked Hokkaido since it was off the beaten path, and we had a great time! Not too crowded since we visted some of the major tourist attractions (Maruyama Park, Nakajima Park & Mount Moiwa) perfect weather (sunny and cool (as a Southeast Asian from the Philippines, we really crave for cold weather)) and it was the full bloom for cherry blossoms! Was nervous at first because of the crowds estimated at Haneda but it was actually a smooth connection from International to Domestic. New Chitose Airport was also relatively smooth, there were above average number of people but it was tolerable. Not too much crowd also in trains even though we usually start our day around noon already. What caught my eye was when it was not a holiday, there were still people who went to work even though its GW. Are they just encouraged to not work and not mandatory during Golden Week?
We were sardines on the Enoden Train and on the streets of Enoshima a few days ago. Then we waited in a long line for the Hakuba Iwatake Gondola this weekend. But today in Matsumoto on Children's Day there were hardly any people about. Whether crowded or not, Japan is epic. In a few days we head home to Australia where there are almost no crowds or lines anywhere- all part of the experience!! And where we will be able to once more drive on good regional roads (not motorways) at 100 km/h. The region road limit of 50 km/h limit here is nuts!
@@mxsaya we saw Fuji easily from the little bridge over to Enoshima but it really is a matter of luck with weather. Maybe a better bet is to go somewhere closer to the mountain when you do have a clear day. Enoshima is about 60km from Fuji as the crow flies.
Slam Dunk is the name of the anime related to that Enoden train crossing. It recently had a resurgence because a new movie came out recently (The sereies itself is 30 years old)
The anime is Slam Dunk. The Japanese is just experiencing the opposite of when the yen was strong and they went on a crazy shopping spree overseas, including the US (and their spree including the purchase of the Rockefeller building).
Is Lawsons within city limits of Tokyo or outside of it ? Is Lawson's a retail store ? Was Mt. Fuji covered in clouds for days and thats why everyone flocked there when clouds started to disappate ?
I was worried about traveling all over Japan on the last 3 days of April because of this, but actually it was almost less crowded on the trains, it seemed to me.
Im in Tokyo the past two days. Honestly it wasn’t too bad. The only truly overcrowded place was harajuku. The airport, shibuya and Shinjuku were not so bad, comparing to Christmas season in midtown nyc.
Tokyo, most locals GET OUT. They go to hometowns or the countryside. Tokyo is usually quiet, was like a ghost town before the tourism boom in 2014. People still come to the city, many day trippers - shopping from the countryside and suburbs. But this year, many stayed home because of the weak yen.
Next year I'm going to Japan from April 24 to May 10. What would be the best 7 days in Tokyo? Golden week ? Outside it? Before or after? Please help (:
Oh! I saved about $300 by booking after Golden Week: also Booking. com is not cheaper even with Genius 3! It was 10% more than Japanese booking sites. I’ll talk about this in another episode.
Hi John, I remember arriving in Tokyo one time & exiting the subway in the ginza and seeing no-one. It was totally surreal and like a scene out of a movie, until it hit me that it was golden week .
Amazed about the volume of tourists in Kamakura. Found a Japanese news video that based in 2019, Kamakura received over a third of the tourist numbers compared to Kyoto and when it's only 1/20th in size in area. Over seven times the density of tourists per square km. Also decades since them considering road congestion pricing.
I wondered why there was a pack of people around that Lawson when I visited last year. I had no idea of the Instagram thing but I went in for a snack....Fuji-San wasn't even visible due to clouds!
Hi John! Let's all have a great summer, but.. I hope with less heat hahaha. Just a random question, and probably a little funny :d. We know that the sizes in clothing are smaller, compared to other countries, but, what about the glasses-sunglasses and hats? I'm kind of a bighead, and sometimes I strangle to find the right sizes even here, in Greece.
Glasses here are BIG for my face. Impossible to find any that look good without going to kids size 😝 hats too. Japanese yards are generally different shaped which I noticed with the helmets for motorcycles.
my friends were here during golden week (was their spring break) and we met this past friday and saturday....boy was it crowded everywhere and i live in Koga in Ibaraki, and the trains got packed as soon as i got to Omiya station :P things we wanted to see were sold out, or closed haha. they had a good time anyways and it was nice to see them after so long, but its too bad their spring break coincided with golden week.
Watching this on my way back from climbing tsukuba-san! Thanks for the good content! People should try to get off the beaten path. It wasn't very crowded out here, and getting to Tsukuba-san is only ~1.5 hours from Tokyo.
@onlyinjapanGO it certainly was a bit cloudy, but I was able to still see pretty far! Plus the clouds and breeze helped to make the flight nice and cool.
Yeah, I noticed that from November 2022, more and more people have been pouring into Japan. I've lived in Japan on and off for about 4 years now, but I first came in late March 2014. There are legit more tourists here and during times like GW, it's ridiculous - just too many people in all the departments stores and restaurants. I wouldn't even bother going to Kyoto any place like that here. Tokyo Disney ? Hahahahaha , no way.
Yes crowded, but domestic spending aids the Japanese economy. The country needs the spending. Lawson's issue is bad as I can see. Other videos gloss over it, but yours shows the reality. Thanks for the video.
How much Percent of the Japan WorkForce is forced due to WorkEthics to take WorkHoliday in Golden Week ? Sounds like a big Vaccation Monopoly. In the end poor people cannot go on vaccation in Golden Week. Also Infrastructure seems completely overrun 😅 I know there are som National Celebration Days in that week but the rest of days seem wasted for vaccation when i see the crowds...
Everyone does everything at the same time. Society in sync. Easy to understand. Made sense decades ago. Not so much now. Banks at 9-3pm. ATM used to close for a week for these holidays! We all just knew when vacation was and how to do it … clockwork. It’s good it’s changed. It’s not a monopoly anymore in that way. We’ve Silver Week now too!
At first when I read the news article about the issues with the tourists causing issues at that Lawsons, I initially thought "oh, how bad can it be?. That's a bit of an overreaction". But when I saw your video, I then realised that it is beyond shockingly bad, and I then agreed that something needs to be done.
what I see is a dozen people there ....too much? yes, it may be dangerous and inappropriate to jaywalking in the center of the road but if Japan wishes to attract more tourists, they must look for alternative ideas for crowd control.
I wonder where it goes? For real. Mostly Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and a handful of other places. It really needs to diversify as we see the over tourism is a result of people flocking to the same places over and over again.
you're very fortunate not to have a 9-5 salaryman job. you can wake up whenever you want and avoid the train crowds. walk around the city doing live streams and sitting at a park testing various foods. what do you do for dental and vision and health insurance for the family? and what about a pension plan? do you have a backup plan incase RUclips changes its way of doing business? I'm just curious. thanks.
If I do that, I can’t pay rent. 9-5 jobs are also wonderful, stable - predictable. Creators can overwork, there is no turning it off. I can, now - but I’ve many friends that cannot. There are pluses and minuses to everything but the flexibility is always nice.
People are idiots for disrupting traffic, but most of them seem to come from China who are disrupting traffic and climbing on signs, etc. I am Chinese from United States and have no desire to there to take a photo of Mt Fuji.
John, I respect your views but I really hated when you said India doesn’t have traffic lights? You’re half Indian yourself but the prejudice seems discourteous. Please refrain from making such unnecessary remarks. It was very uncharacteristic of you.
Oh, come on. Let’s be real. Crossing the street has been very very hard in many places in the cities and it’s my opinion based on my experience. I’m sure it’s getting better but most roads didn’t even have lines on the road to mark the lanes 10 years ago. It was probably one of the scariest and most dangerous experiences traveling for me and took forever to do, safely. Best was to get into an auto and just have them drive you. Walking along the roads in many places in India can be insane.
Here’s the stream from Mt Fuji Lawsons last week:
