this is the best automotive based podcast out right now. actual knowledge being discussed, not just annoying call outs for click bait.
I stopped the video 12mins in just to make this comment….I was working at Musi with Dave and Tommy Gonzales and I’m happy for all of Dave’s success and even happier he gave Tommy G some credit ….I know this isn’t about Tommy but I’m glad to hear Dave give Tommy his props …..Tommy (a personal friend) doesn’t even come close to getting the credit he deserves in the cylinder head world…..👍👍👍
I should have mentioned Charlie too. If it wasn't for the Wino Tommy or I would not be as good as we are.
Thought ive yet to meet Dave in person, I've studied all of his content for years. Our small online conversations ALWAYS offer me some sort of knowledge I didn't previously have. Dave is VERY good at his craft and his experience shows in his product and results. My FAVORITE thing about Dave is the fact he is NOT afraid to share what he knows. His dedication to excellence as well as teaching are priceless. I love seeing the Alpha podcast grow more each week, and having guests like Dave is a milestone in itself. Keep it up guys!
He's a hoot!!!
@@1997obspsdhe is for sure. He has a very comical sense of humor
You can tell this guy definitely offers his customers cost-effective options. Not one of those shops/guys that bleeds the customer dry.
For what he says, it's quite true in many cases as people can over do a head and lose power or have no benefit.
Dave built the heads for my 800whp STi. He talked me out of installing huge cams (thank god) and gave me an immense amount of knowledge in like 5 minutes. He accidentally full ported one of my heads and then called and gave me a great deal on doing the other head since he made a mistake. So not only did I get an amazing product but also got a port for next to nothing bc he wanted to make it right with me. Headgames is the best around.
I was told along time ago by an old cylinder head guy “don’t worry about flow numbers at max lift worry about the flow numbers before max lift because that’s where the valve spends most of its time you are only at max lift for a very short time “
This is exactly why I sent my cylinder head to head games. Dave knows his stuff and his processes are top notch. LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact they measure and ensure all the parts work together and isn’t just an install parts and out the door machine shop. My car is only on break in miles but the car feels as if it just breathes happily in comparison to the stock head.
Thanks!
The honesty is refreshing sooooooooo refreshing.
Really great to see a newer gen podcast representing by bringing the Generals / OGs of what built car/performance culture over the last 20 years .
As a machinist myself I love hearing this guy talk, thanks for having him on
Dave is a living legend. Great interview
This man talks like he has nothing to prove. 🐐
I listened to all 1 hr and 52 mins of this!! Fav podcast out right now!
Dave is a G! Had them build my 2jzgte head. Gave me insight and dropped some knowledge on me and helped me out a lot, and guided me in the right direction. Much love to Headgames Motorworks! 🤘
This man is full of more “useless” information than me haha so much awesome info in this video much love keep the cool guest ‘Flowing’
This was definitely a plot twist!!! Shout out to all the machine shops that know what they are doing ❤
The best analogy of porting a head is like sucking through a straw, the smaller the diameter of the straw the harder it is to suck and if the diameter is of the hole is too big you choke. It’s all about having the right combination.
It’s all about having the right combination
Dave head games and Brad from BZE are the goats of cylinder heads
So thankful I found your channel through alex. Love the knowledge I've gained from your videos.
Bro said he’s more consistent than the machine. That’s wild.
Wow!!! Great pod! Looking forward to some new headgames content too!!
Love this episode, so much great info my head looking like jimmy neutron! Keep it up Tukes 💯
This is such a killer podcast! Love what you do man! Having Dave on was such an amazing guest!!
Now we need Darin Morgan THEE cylinder head airflow dynamic guru
I read GM Hightech performance back in the day! That magazine was awesome!
Turbo Magazine back in the 90’s was one of the first to feature even domestic turbo builds.
AMRY checking in. Great podcast!
Glad to see the channel growing
Had to stop & hit the like once he said they need a helmet, that’s a window licking moment. 🙌🏽😅
Great info!!! I drive my 2j every where!!!! With a ATF a340!!!
Dave is a very humble dude.
My Man Dave 🎉❤
Great interview! Meet more people like this guy!
That’s a lot of Information. I was searching terms cause I’m a small block Chevy guy. I was looking up bmw engines, Supra engines. And I’m in North Texas maybe I need to check out a T2k event.
Always knew the supra was awesome. I saw one on the dealer lot in 1993. They didn’t market that car well at all. If they would have marketed that car better there would be more. That sequential turbo was crazy. And that’s the 90’s.
You see, interviews like this make me flash back to my undergrad, when I was in lecture hall. Feel like I need to break out a notebook and take notes.
Head games 🐐🔥. Another BANGER episode
On the 4B11 topic I agree with Headgames for the most part with oversized valves, those alone won't cut it and the job needs to be done by a experienced shop.I believe you have to go all the way with the head, ungraded springs, guides, oversized valves, cams, and port the head, and have that done by someone with that experience. For example, I have all that done to my Evo X. So fully built head, built bottom end. I have a friend that also built his motor around the same time as me and we have the same builder, same tuner, same parts, stock turbos, only difference is I have the ported head, oversized valves, and guides right. So we wanted to test the theory out on the street. We raced each other from rolls 3 times, and every time from 3rd-5th gear my car was faster by half a car. Then we both noticed that we have different fall offs for our top end acceleration. My friend acceleration falls off at 120 like stock, but my acceleration continues to 140 145ish. Now I know people will argue that the stock head flows better, but at the end of the day if that's true my car shouldn't be the faster car on similar setups it should be the opposite. I'm just throwing that out there, there's paper, tests, and theory, and there's just doing it right. But to be clear, I am currently past that. I'm currently at a level where I am putting that head work to use, and I went that route because on the stock motor, I cracked a piston and snapped a valve in cylinder 1, and I choose to build the head once since I knew where I want my power level to be.
Which turbo and hot side are you using for your combo? Great insight 👍
@@luvhcchris at the time the turbos was completely stock, currently I have a open scroll 3591 from Turbos Are US(stock location). I believe my turbine(hot side) is around 65mm I don't have the exact numbers on the top of my head.
@@jonathanbailey646 gotcha. That’s impressive changes to head on the stock turbo makes up that much difference on the rolls, head to head 👌. Lots of other factors like driver mod, etc but if it’s the same result every time, then we can make our own conclusions based off that haha
Even if you say it's faster and he says it's not...... at 1:15:30 he says oversized valves don't fit the seat/head. It's a longevity issue, the valve can't dissipate the heat partially sitting on the aluminum.
@@drewdavis239Saying and doing is two different things. He did say that, no one is out there putting these combos to the street to know if the setups work or not. So things remain in theory, I just proved my combo works. On the point about the valves partly on the aluminum. I'm not discrediting him or anything, but I did say you'll need to bring your head to a shop who's experienced in this, if the valves can't rest on the seats, you can't get a proper seal and you'll see that in your vacuum on your boost gauge. But like I said I'm not going to deny his claim, oversized valve jobs doesn't work for everyone and it's a known fact. I already have 3 years and 20K miles on this head, if I burn a valve then alright. They're only $16 per exh valve, and I can take the head off myself and bring it to the shop. It won't be that simple for other's I'm sure but I'm paying to play and it seems like I'm winning.
Thank you for this.
Dave Localio and I met way back in 2001. He instantly became part of 2 cars that wrote a lot of Import racing history. Headgames is the first cylinder head to go 6's in Import Drag racing history (6.98 at 196 mph Octorber 2002 Englishtown). Dave Localio will always be my brother, my teammate, and a great Champion!

A sido genial leerte Dave y eso que no me gusta, no entiendo nada de ingles, pero aquí h estado durante casi 2 horas, escuchando y leyendo.
Felicitaciones al canal por esta entrevista.
Saludos desde España.
It's been great reading you Dave and I don't like it, I don't understand any English, but I've been here for almost 2 hours, listening and reading.
Congratulations to the channel for this interview.
Greetings from Spain.
Tukes youre doing a great job on these interviews brother. Keep it up!
Appreciate it!
Love the intro
Carbs are simple. Air goes through the opening passes over small passages the venturi effect draws the fuel up the passage from the float bowl. Adjustment is all done via jet sizes float level and air bleeds
HA! Still over my head.
@@headgames 😂 it's okay big dawg your still badass 🤘🏻. Grew up with the old junk I'm just now learning the fuel injected stuff in depth
Yeah except that when you start talking emulsion tubes the convo gets complicated quick 😂
@@nolo2484agreed emulsion tubes can make big changes to delivery
Great info 📝
Had a cylinder head guy 20 years ago in shady Palm Bay, Florida who did everything at his house. Coincidentally had to replace a 4g63 that he ported into a water line by accident lol
Hopefully the GE heads get some love this episode.
GE heads are great. Just tough for old school and bespoke items.
They've been getting loved. What more do you want? Higher prices? Lol
This is a great podcast. Yeah, the hotshots talking shit on brands gets a ton of rage views and rage comments, but this stuff is the meat and potatoes. Respects guys who have smaller budgets, and actually builds cars
Hell yeah great inf this guy its a monster 🔥 👍
Oh man I just saw this pop up in the feed….. I’m an oldschool lover of headwork from way back in my B-Series days…. Where there were just a few places u could take ur head if u had the money.
Were talking oldschool; Dan Paramore, PWK and ofc JG when Papadakis was in the back all quiet just building motors and had much more weight on him.
No one knew the secrets beyond 3/5 angle valve jobs and when it came to the actual porting it was like magic and maybe a bit more in our heads than actually making huge power lol.
Looking forward to this episode.
Great podcast
when you guys were saying VANOS in regards to valve lift and spring pressure, did you guys really mean Valvetronic?
We need timestamps in the description
I like the intro 😮
The new BMW and Audi tech is honestly WILD
I do think he is wrong on the bmw engines. A bmw S85 V10 i think it was done a 6s 1/4 about a decade ago, so saying he can't imagine a bmw engine ever going 6s is wild 😮
B58/s58 i have a hard time believing at this time
@@headgamesYou did specify the new BMW's. I do not think most people understand they use adjustable valve lift in place of a traditional style throttle body. ( To control the engine rpm.) It's a totally different technology. That technology may or may not be able to function with a spring stiff enough to control the valve, at a power level required to go 6's
👍whats crazy is re using stock head bolts an rod bolts
Cleetus and Jay from realstreet next?
Gotta search more on the fox body mustangs he has!!!
Man I used to be out on woodhaven and the blvd back in the 90’s its was always packed! Like the original f&f
yes! Till F&F came out.
Good stuff.
Man I feel like people forgot about the Evo X. I remember they used to be called the mini godzilla since it had a dual clutch gear box like the nissan gtr, which were the only two JDM cars sold with that at the time.
Would have liked to hear Tukes ask about the importance of the intake/exhaust manifold …and the effects of boost in an intake/exhaust system …good stuff tho
I need to work for @headgames asapppp. I have a manufacturing tech diploma and 12yrs machining experience. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
1:26:34is what I was waiting for.
More air+more fuel=more power.
If you want reliability and efficiency, port heads.
This guy is giving us straight facts 💯. Take notes and pass it on.. thanks OG
At the end of the day it's all about
Bhp per liter per bar boost.
Bhp\L\bar.
The old intro was way better
Wow I'm the complete opposite! i want the good parts and I will figure out the labor later lol
My engine builder told me. You want a ported head and waste money? Or just get a bigger turbo and save money. He said your cam and turbo matching is more important than wasting money on a head for a FORCED induction car. We are not talking about NA cars.
Yeah that’s not true. Ported head helps make power easier, more efficient and less expensive than running more boost when it comes apart. But, depending on the power level.
Dimples work on two stroke engines especially when you do the crank case
Wonder if he's talking about Crower valve springs
If the B58 or S58 were steel blocks we might see 6’s I don’t think the aluminum blocks will ever hold the power required to go that fast.
Need more merch asap
12's was fast in 92 don't get me wrong we had funny cars and drag cars moving out.. I got out of high school in 91, and back then if you had a 14-15 second car that was considered fast. And Foxbody's were King other than Vettes back then. The Mustang was the car most people could afford back then though too and camaro's too.. But now everything is crazy fast.. Automatic's were terrible when I was a kid.. No one wanted an auto back then.. (Everyone who was fast drove a manual thats how bad the auto's were..) There wasn't paddle shifting, DCT's or cars that self correct for you.. OMG and the suspension Tech now is so much better now too.. We didn't have cars that did 0-60's in under 4 seconds or even under 7 seconds.. Now they make Turbo 4 cylinder cars with front wheel DCT's or AWD that do 0-60 in like 4 seconds.. That's pretty standard in sedan's now.. I'm in a Manual Mustang GT and some of these lighter 4 cylinder turbo's are a problem from time to time because I have to shift gears and they don't.. It's really that simple because I have been in a 10 speed GT and they just move out... Anyway my point is manual driving is becoming a lost art and the automatic's they are making now are nasty.. It's got to the point where the tran's is almost more important than the motors.. We used to have 350 HP cars that barely put 200 down to the street we used to lose almost half our power to the drive train.. The drive train's they make now are super efficient and that's what is making an even bigger difference now, not just the 300 HP to 500 HP but the way the car puts it down..
Ay real talk is bro tweaked of a yerk or what he blinked 14 times the whole interview lol 😂
Exactly not everybody needs a ported head perfect example is the Gen 2 Coyote I have never seen a domestic court of this stop heads and cams the car made 1900hp Lund Tuned
There is gains to be had with the Gen2. Just an exhaust valve and valve job is a gain on that head.
This is literally the last podcast I’m watching before I turn my self in tomorrow FREE ME! We better be at a million subs when I get back see ya next year 🫡😢
No way…. You serious??
@tonetoofast One day at a time , free u, be safe .
I wonder how he feels about JDM big Port EJ20 heads?
I haven't seen them make a difference. But, I think we have only done 2-3 sets over the last decade.
@@headgames if your intersted I have a spare set, I could send it to yall and you could flow test it. The ports are 10x bigger than the normal EJ25 head
Aye go to a drag and drive see the cars that make that haul
