- Julia Hartley-Brewer grills Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle on his support for Costa Coffee making a mural showing a trans man with mastectomy scars.
The company has defended the image as a celebration of "inclusivity and diversity," but it's facing a wave of anger from people who say it is glamourising complex, dangerous surgery.
“If someone said they wanted to cut their right leg off, would it be their choice and would you endorse that? Would we celebrate it?”

Boycotts are done in order to show a company that you the consumer do not agree with their actions or statements and until they stop, you wont be giving them your business. Cancel culture is usually the undeserved cancelling of an individual, usually for a ridiculous reason. Cancelling usually means preventing that personfrom earning a living or losing their job. Then after all that there is still no forgiveness or relenting even when that person gives an apology.

A person owns a small independent coffee shop and works in a supermarket a few evenings a week whilst it's getting off the ground. They write a tweet you disagree with.
Refusing to go to the coffee shop and spending your money elsewhere is a boycott. Your money, your choice. If you go further and attempt to get that person sacked from the supermarket and removed from Twitter, that is canceling.
The boycott affects the person within the confides of capitalism. Capitalism here acts a sort of democracy. If you're the only one that doesn't like the tweet, the business looses only your purchases and pretty much carries on as usual. If everyone disapproves of the tweet, the business will be closed fairly quickly.
When you and a few others attempt to cancel the person from their job or social media, you act as an arbiter. You attempt to affect the person's life for something said that most people may not disagree with. You attempt to remove the person from parts of society without the explicit blessing of the rest of society.
You also force your beliefs upon a 3rd party who end up damaging the person based on the radicalism of a few.
It's your money to soely decide what to do with, not your society, not your rules, not your Country to solely decide the course of.
Take a shortcut: What is responsible for this is a local version of Humans' Right Campaign's Corporate Equity Index (CEI) which lobbies hard for this, threatening to cut off the business' contacts and devaluating it if it doesn't comply. Just so you know who the real enemies are.

I am someone who had a mastectomy not by choice. It was traumatic and horrific. It ruined my life, despite the wonderful surgeon rebuilding me to look amazing, as I looked before, with no visible scars. The thought of anyone doing this to themselves when they have a beautiful healthy, natural body makes me want to vomit. They have no gratitude for what they have. Why destroy your beautiful body just because your emotions are confused? It solves nothing. A woman without boobs is not a man. Much better to fix your malfunctioning emotions.

Julia I agree 100% with you. A mastectomy is a devastating operation for any woman. I'm so glad my local hospital (Northwick Park) opened a breast care and reconstruction unit 2 years ago. Not wishing to hi-jack this debate, we need also to stop promoting male circumcision as something clean amd healthy. Soap, water and safe sex practices do the job far more effectively. The risks are massive ; erectile dysfunction, meatal stenosis, body dysphoria, and are purposely left unspoken. The foreskin is not a biohazard. It is a necessary and beautiful part of the male anatomy. I was circumcised myself without my consent when I was a baby. After suffering years of foreskin dysphoria after being at an extremely tough all-boys' grammar school where 99% of my classmates were genitally intact and clearly proud of it, I rebrew my foreskin, a far, far easker process than a sexual transition and for me personally, medically uplifting. As a result of my experience, I make no apology whatsoever for opposing ANY form of genital mutilation, male or female, and will be boycotting Costa for a very long time, if not forever. My heart goes out to any woman who is undergoing, or has undergone, a mastectomy, and I hope that those who wish to have amputated breasts reconstructed are able to do so. I would happily pay more taxes ti see more breast reconstruction units built at NHS hospitals, so that women who can't afford private surgery can have breast reconstructions if that is their wish.

The best way that Costa - or, indeed, any other shop or organisation - can "celebrate diversity", is to just concentrate on the time-honoured practice of giving excellent customer service to all customers regardless of sex, gender, race, skin colour, age, nationality, etc, etc. Virtue signalling is not necessary and only serves to alienate the majority of the population.

My beautiful wife lost her left breast to cancer and it took years before she was confident enough to even wear a baggy top in public.
So now every time she walks past one of these cafes she'll be reminded of that terrible period in her life.
I'm at sea right now but when I get home and if the godawful costa cafe at Newcastle central station has this highly offensive mural I'm going to buy a balloon, fill with red gloss paint and smash it off the disgusting picture.

A friend of mine had breast cancer and her only option was a mastectomy. She only had cancer in one breast but the hospital couldn't guarantee (obviously) that she wouldn't develop it in her remaining breast ,so she asked for a double mastectomy, just to be sure! She had to have a psychological evaluation before they would even consider it an option! 🤦♀️Make it make sense 🙄

A procedure they seem to be able to get with great ease and very little counselling.

This man needs to look at the suicide rates amongst those who have 'transitioned'. It's nineteen times the rate of the rest of the population. Yesterday I watched a horrific video, a court scene in the USA, featuring a girl put on puberty blockers at 9, given testosterone injections at 12 and a double mastectomy at 15. She subsequently realised she wasn't 'trans' at all, just scared by the attention her developing body got from men - something I COMPLETELY understand. Puberty IS scary for many girls because it's effects are more visible - and then there's the onset of menstruation and all the anxiety that goes with it. And isn't it amazing how all this inclusivity never, or rarely, includes people over 50?
Having mastectomy under age is a completely different situation to an adult person deciding to do so.

don't understand this at all. I worked alongside a psychology student in the 90's and we, along with the rest of the class were horrified at the mention of "body dysmorphic disorder" which included mention of many instances of self mutilation, including that recorded of a person putting their legs on a train track because they didn't want them and the doctors wouldn't remove them. This MP should have been in that class. Hiss views and attitudes have been skewed because of the influence of woke ideology, which is devoid of common sense.
I love the way he tries to make out that Julia is arguing "at the extremes", when most rationale human beings are able to identify that mutilating ones body (or someone elses) due to body dismorphia IS extreme. Having your boobs or penis cut off is no less extreme than cutting a hand or foot off.

Lib dems are no where near the centre, nor are modern Tories, there isn't anything remotely conservative about them, just because they are slightly right of Starlin, doesn't make the right wing or even centrists, we have no consevative/right wing parties to vote for, just different flavours of socialist.

We are also forgetting another very serious issue, that of the part that surgeons are playing by actively remove the breasts of perfectly healthy tissue. We have short memories. Following the second world war Drs were sentenced for carrying out experiments of surgery on people and without anaesthetic because they were prisoners who couldn't escape the assault. These surgeons were convicted at trial. When are surgeons going to also be held responsible for carrying out this mutilations on young women who would otherwise be given professional help via a pyschiatrist. ?

Have a friend who just found out she has cancer. She has young children so she opted for a radical bi-lateral mastectomy to help make sure she gets to raise them to adulthood.
So, yeah, this is offensive.

A mentally healthy woman wouldn’t even contemplate elective double mastectomy, we need to fully acknowledge that to make such a choice on a non medical basis is not a healthy impulse.
