The hold tip was great training aid. I work with military K9, so a dog "holding" is a great thing (in a different context). Lol. But getting into training retreiving dogs is new to me. I have a 6 month old GSP, and she comes from a long hunting GSP blood line, and bighting isn't an issue with her. It's the keeping hold and bringing back to me. Thanks for the channel and your content.

This was very helpful! I’m working with a pet 1year old Golden Retriever who won’t hold and is easily distracted .

Into the weeds, under water and pop up in cattails....it all depends on where you hunt.

Gold information thanks, should we use food for that?

I do not use food rewards past the puppy stage. Just give the dog a good dose of praise.

It took my dog a little bit but you just got to work with him on it

Thank you for the video. I have a dog that absolutely loves to fetch, but stops about 15 feet from me and drops the bumper. When I put her up onto a table to train "hold", she refuses to take the bumper into her mouth. In this situation should I be prying her jaws open and then holding the bumper in her mouth? I've tried this a couple of times, but she really fights me on it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Conditioned retrieve starts with the dog accepting the bumper into their mouth. Some dogs need to have it held in for the first few times. Use soothing commands like good dog and hold when the pup is doing correct.

How do you dissuade them from chewing on the bumper while they are holding it?

tap them under the chin with your hand when they start moving it and tell them to hold. It is mouth control, whether dropping it or chewing on it.

How old is this fine dog? I’ve got a charcoal that was given to me at 9 months and I am starting to wonder if she’s too far gone to begin training. This might be preposterous to think but I’ve never trained a dog before and am just looking for some insight. Thanks.

It is never too old for a dog that has the drive and desire to retrieve.
The dog in the video is just over a year.
