Dirk Nowitzki's last chance to save the Mavericks in the 2011 NBA Finals needs a deep rewind
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июн 2024
- When Dirk Nowitzki stared down the basket with a tied score and seconds remaining in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, he wasn't just staring down a potential victory. He was staring down a road win against the overwhelmingly brilliant Miami Heat Big 3. He was staring down yet another comeback for a 2011 Dallas Mavericks defined by them. He was staring down a shot at revenge for the team that stifled his Mavs back in 2006, and with it a chance to take control of his legacy. This final Mavs possession in Game 2 was a huge fork in the road. Before we watch Dirk attack, we should rewind.

As a lifelong Mavs fan, I didn't need this championship to love Dirk, but I'm thankful that this finals got him the worldwide respect he deserved, which was also redemption for many others on the team (Terry, Kidd, Stojakovic, etc.). Terry was also a beast, both on and off the court, and with Dirk getting so much criticism from '06 to '11 Terry handled the bulk of the media talks so Dirk didn't have to (Terry does love to talk). After winning, Dirk got a lot more comfortable and relaxed, showing off his goofy self again, to the amusement of all.
lifelong Suns fan checking in. Dirk was always upsettingly excellent during the years the Suns were looking for that first ring for the team. in the mid 10s when the Suns were horrid and Dirk turned into team-leading old man Dirk (and still putting out effective minutes), it became fun to root for the guy I knew was destined for the Hall from the moment he put his skillset together with longevity. I've always been a big fan of the dude. glad to see some respect on his name.
Sacramento Kings Peja fan here, I think everyone in the league had a divisional hometown hero they were rooting for to finally get theirs this final. Beautiful moment!
As a NJ Nets fan, I was happy that group with Jason Kidd won the 2011 Finals.

Man this was one of, if not the greatest playoff run in NBA history. There's literally no asterisks you can come up with. It also gave us Brandon Roy's last great game before he retired. That comeback against Dallas should never be forgotten. The Blazers honestly gave Dallas more trouble than any one else that post season some how.
Only children who don’t watch basketball put asterisks on things
@@evanw7878, A ring is a ring. You cannot remove the hard work it took to get to that point. People just use asterisks to hate.
What made this championship more meaningful was that this was when the super teams was taking over the league.
Agree!
Blazers did not give Dallas a tougher time than Miami. If not for that miracle comeback in game 2, Dallas would’ve been down 3-0 in the finals.
If you give value to championship rings this has to be one of the most valuable rings ever won in the NBA
Could be argued as the most valuable due to the difficulty the mavs had to face but there have been others too
It’s definitely up there
that 94' rockets team has to be #1
Amen. Especially when compared to Cupcake's empty rings!
Lebron’s Championship in CLE over the 73-win is also up there. My favorite chip? Mavs over MIA in ‘11 and then Spurs over MIA in ‘14.
This is the true "hardest road". If i can remember correctly, all the mavs' opponents did not have star missing due to injury. Roy, aldridge, kobe, gasol, bynum, odom, harden, durant, westbrook, lebron, bosh and wade. Such a frightening list.

Dirk’s entire 2011 playoff performance was the most impressive run of any superstar that took his team to a championship that I’ve ever seen. With a solid core around him but no other legit #2 (with all due respect to Jason Terry, J Kidd who was certainly past his prime at that point and Tyson Chandler who was there defensive MVP) he led his team to playoff victories over Kobe, Durant, Harden, Westbrook, LeBron, Wade and Bosh. That is stupendously great.

I think the only person who was close that IVE personally ever seen was Kawhi. Except Kyle Lowery and Siakam are legit #2s, just not stars. Everyone else has had a star.
I think another run would have to be, ironically, Wade by himself with an Aging Shaq, that’s bout it.
Also, don’t talk like those players are the same as they are now. KD and Harden got a billion times better and if we ran it back right now prime vs prime the heat lose easily.

One thing not mentioned is that Dirk had been using that move all season, except instead of continuing the drive as he did here, he would normally do his patented fade away at the elbow for the mid-range jumper.
Bosh bites on his feign of the mid-range because he had seen it already, but Dirk wasn't settling this time. He would not be denied. Bucket.

As a Heat fan, I can honestly say I blame this 100% on LeBron. He got BULLIED by JJ Barea this series. In game 2 in particular, after Wade hit that corner 3, LeBron took every field goal until the final minute. Wade was cooking, but LeBron wanted to make sure he got the individual attention so he demanded the ball and it backfired big time. That's where Wade stepping aside and giving the keys to LeBron going forward came from. If Wade gets the ball that comeback never happens.
On the other side though, Dirk may be the most underrated PF of all time. I dont know anyone who puts them in the top 5 conversation, but he was consistent for so long and proved he could beat any single coverage for a decade.

This one 4th quarter was maybe the most hyped I had ever been. This was a deserved championship. This man did everything for the franchise

Living in Miami and growing up as a Mavericks fan, this championship was such a memorable moment in my life! Truly the best sports moment I’ve ever experienced
As a mavs fan this is a great Christmas gift
That team was resilient. Butler was their 2nd best player, and in the league at the time performed better against LeBron than any other SF matchup. To lose him in Milwaukee like they did, right after Dirk went down and Butler had really stepped up to lead in his absence was a blow during the season
This was such an epic comeback for the mavs ... They were down 15 points with about 7 minutes left... That entire playoff run they had a few double-digit comebacks in the fourth quarter.... Think about it .. this was LeBron's first year in Miami... They had the whole big three celebration before the season started in which LeBron proclaimed the heat would win multiple titles... And this is prime LeBron prime Wade prime Bosh ...
And the mavs were an older team and took out the heat

Game 4 in OKC down 15 with 5 mins Mavs d went nuts as did Dirk's offense to tie and win in overtime to go 3-1 then wrap it in 5 OKC Durant at the time was quoted later on years later saying that had kinda shocked them and you could see it in the game five loss I remember this run like it ess yday

This series was probably the sweetest moments in NBA history for me
I’m glad y’all finally made a rewind video of the MAVS 2011 playoff run. It’s probably the most underrated NBA Finals in history. That MAVS comeback win in game 2 was huge. If MAVS don’t come back & win that game. It’s over. MAVS get swept. I remember watching game 2. I was in jail at the time. We were all watching the game. Once Wade hit that 3 in the corner. To give Miami a 15 point lead. Everyone stopped watching the game & went to bed. I was the only one to stay & watch the game. When the MAVS came roaring back. Everyone else returned. But I stayed, even when they fell behind. I was taught, you live & die with your team. Not matter what the score is, you stay & support your team. Till the bitter end. Because I live by that, I was able to witness the MAVS great comeback.
As a mavs fan since I was a kid back in 2000s, this is my best moment of basketball.

Man did this with the craziest fever. Dirk was a Hall of Famer for this alone.
I remember traveling through Cleveland when lebron, Wade & Bosh did the “Yes We Did” event and I remember people burning their Lebron merch and jerseys in the streets, business were painting over their Lebron murals, and fans crying heartbroken on the news. I never felt such anguish throughout an entire city, I thought people were going to riot at one point.
2011 Mavs will always be special in NBA history. 💯
Lost my voice during that series. So glad for Dirk and the Mavs. Damn near cried when he walked out of the arena after winning. No one gives JET's tattoo enough credit though. 🤣🤣🤣
“Then he probably has to get back on defense” I can’t be the only that barely noticed how well Dirk defended that last second heave by Wade after he said that, right? Lol
That is a very underrated part of that whole sequence, especially when you consider how known Wade was back then for making last second heaves, even if only a few of them were actually at the last second of the game. Dirk made sure it was over, and wasn't letting anything take it from him.
dirk will forever be a hoops legend for this impossible playoff run. without him they're probably not even a playoff team, nevermind a 3 seed. to culminate in beating the pansiest and most talented big 3 off all time is just the cherry on top.

One of the last truly great non-superteams to win an NBA title and Dirk Nowitzki's finest hour. As a Heat fan, I gotta give Dirk and the Mavs full credit for their Finals performance. The Mavs who had less talent had all the drive and determination to win a champion, while the Heat will all the talent in the world, got in their own heads and imploded under pressure. (Except for Wade, he had another stellar Finals showing.)
DIrk was also playing with flu like symptoms and a debilitating fever during this game and he kept pushing himself and provided that clutch effort to seal the victory.
