This was very helpful, my class is working on a timed assignment and everyone spent around 30 minutes dimensioning 5 parts while I did it in 5 minutes!

My model has tolerances (e.g. h7 & H7) in my .ipt which I used the green traingle and yellow circle (from the "Evaluated Size") to make the model the size I wanted the tool shop to machine it to (they use a CADCAM software and just import the model and select lines). The issue was that the .dwg then updated to show the "nominal" size the model reflected in the .ipt. Is there a way to auto retrieve the dimensions used to created the .ipt and not the Model size?

G'day Lars, is there a way to automatically dimension the vertical and horizontal extents of a view of a part in the drawing?
All of my parts have a STP file accompanying them and the drawing is only used to check scale and overall dimensions after being folded.

Even though my drawing was metric, the sheet is trying to dimension in imperial units, how do I fix this? I tried a Google search, but Inventor 2018 isn't showing Units when I go to Document Settings.

    Does this work with assemblies?

I designed a part in fusion 360 and imported it into inventor 2017 pro to utilize this auto dimension feature. I followed your instructions and created a drawing. When I select the base view and right click on it and select retrieve dimensions, the box pulls up as it should. When I click "select dimension", no dimensions pop up. It will however allow me to manually dimension the drawing. What could be the issue here. Does the part have to be designed in inventor?

Yes, the auto dimensions feature are stealing all the dimensions from your sketches. It is actually not analyzing the model

Lars Christensen so there is no way to auto dimension from an imported part?
